Grant as Sojourner Truth Monday, January 15 at 1:00 PM Family Friendly Event no registration required Join storyteller Mary J. Grant as she explores the life and influence of Sojourner Truth. Truth was born into slavery, obtained her freedom and became an influential abolitionist and suffragist. Truth was an amazing speaker and singer, but illiterate. The revenue from the used book sales is their primary source of income each year and they make generous donations to the Library for materials, equipment and programs. This year the Friends paid for half of the new document/book/ photo scanner, multiple copies of book discussion titles, the newsletter and programs. The Friends need assistance setting up and breaking down the book sale area. They will need help bringing boxes of books up from the basement using carts and the elevator, and sorting books onto tables. After the sale, they will need help taking unsold books back to the basement. They also need help putting some lawn signs around the City Hall campus advertising the sale. You don t have to be a member to assist with the sale. Please contact the Library if you have a couple of hours to help. The Friends also need paper grocery bags for their bag sale. They can be dropped off at the library anytime before the sale. Thank you! Hats off to the Kentucky Derby: A History of Hats Fashion Show with Refreshments Saturday, May 5 at 1:00 PM Tickets: $20.00 in advance starting April 9, 2018 There are few American sporting events with the history and popularity of the Kentucky Derby. Its rich traditions sipping a mint julep, donning a beautiful hat, and joining fellow racing fans in singing "My Old Kentucky Home" make it a celebration of southern culture and a true icon of Americana. We invite you to wear your hat and join us as the ladies from "Fashion and the Automobile" take a look at the Kentucky Derby and the Parade of Hats worn throughout the decades. Light refreshments will be provided. Selfies are allowed with the vintage hats! Alzheimer's Association: Dementia Conversations Tuesday, April 3 at 2:00 PM When someone is showing signs of dementia, it s time to talk. Often, conversations with family about changing behaviors can be challenging and uncomfortable. This program provides tips for breaking the ice with your family so you can address some of the most common issues that are difficult to discuss: going to the doctor for a diagnosis or medical treatment, deciding when to stop driving, and making legal and financial plans for future care.

7 Page 7 Friendly Connections From the Director Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in. Author Unknown I ve seen this quotation included many times in articles about volunteerism. I ve seen it on coffee mugs, book bags, scratch pads and t-shirts. In its simplicity, it sums up the power of volunteering. Each day at the Library I am reminded how important our volunteers are to the Library and the greater community the City of Roseville. Our volunteers move and organize dozens of boxes of materials each spring and autumn for the Friends of the Library used book sales the Friends largest fund raising event. They provide valuable assistance at library programs doing anything and everything including dressing up as wizards and zombies, applying temporary tattoos, handing out craft supplies and distributing sno-cones, cotton candy, popcorn and other refreshments to smiling children. They brave the cold during the City s Annual Tree Lighting to hand out gifts to children waiting to see Santa, serve tea at fund raising events and work in the Library s flower gardens. We could not do any of this without them. Every moment they volunteer for the Library they are making a statement about what they want their community, their Library, and their City to be. They are truly invaluable. Many people don t realize that the Library has an advisory board of five appointed Trustees, Roseville residents, who constitute the body officially responsible for the operation of the Library. These dedicated residents meet monthly (and use the Library frequently) to make policies and oversee the general direction of the Library. They are my bosses. Some Trustees serve a few years and some serve a few decades. It is with sadness that I announce the resignation from the Board of long-time Trustee, Patricia Chownyk. Mrs. Chownyk is one of Roseville s most dedicated advocates. She has served for many years on the boards of the Roseville Library Commission, Friends of the Roseville Public Library and the Roseville Historical and Genealogical Society. Her term of office on the Library Board began in September 1994 and she was instrumental in guiding the Library through a major building addition and renovation and in promoting the Library through successful bond and millage campaigns. Pat s hard work on these organizations sends a clear message about what she wants her community to be. We will miss her presence on the Board, but look forward to seeing her at Friends and RHGS meetings and at the circulation desk when she checks out materials. Jacalynn Harvey, Library Director Plarn Making Drop-in Community Service Wednesday, January 17 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM Youth Programming Room No registration required For all ages On Wednesday, January 17, in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the library will host a day of community service to benefit the local organization, "Macomb Feeding the Need." Items in the collection are not hold-able and have shorter check out times. Have you been waiting a while for the latest John Grisham book or blockbuster DVD? Check out the Lucky Day shelves and it might just be there waiting for you. Have you noticed the bags of books behind the reference desk? They are our new Book Discussion Group kits.
