1 MINUTES MESQUITE MUNICIPAL LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD April 7, :00 p.m. Mesquite Public Library 300 Grubb Drive PRESENT: ABSENT: Tom Brown, Vice-Chair Richard Lawson Beverly Hollingsworth Don Algood Barbara Dunn Linda Ackerson Karen Eberle Dana Smith, Guest Virginia Mundt, Director of Library Services Tom Brown, Vice-Chair, called the meeting to order. March meeting minutes were read. Barbara Dunn made a motion that the minutes be approved. Karen Eberle made a second to the motion and the minutes for the March meeting were approved. The new Director of Library Services, Virginia Mundt, was introduced and provided biographical information about herself and her career. Members of the Library Board and visitor Dana Smith all introduced themselves. Former Director of Library Services, Jeannie Johnson, presented the Mesquite City Council with a revised fee schedule for the Mesquite Public Library System. It was determined by the council that a patron who had lost or damaged library material would be charged the amount it would currently cost to replace the material, instead of the cost paid by the library when the material was initially purchased. The rest of the proposal was passed without any changes. The new fee schedule is entitled Ordinance 4352 and will go into effect on May 1, Signs will be posted in both libraries and bookmarks will be distributed to inform the public of the new fees and fines. Jeannie Johnson submitted the Mesquite Public Library System s Annual Report to the Texas State Library.
2 Page 2 Both libraries closed at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4 and at 6 p.m. on March 5 due to inclement weather and icy roads. The Main Library was closed on Saturday, March 7 and on Saturday, March 14 so that new air conditioning units could be installed. Both libraries provided special children s programs for the week of Spring Break. The Main Library showed The Lego Movie, had a Legos program, a spring craft program and a Fancy Nancy theme party. The North Branch showed the movie Finding Nemo, offered a spring craft program plus game programs. Student Government Day was held on March 20. Jeannie Johnson brought the student library directors from MISD to the Main Library, gave them a tour, discussed her duties as library director and showed them services provided by the library. Jennifer Britton, from the North Branch, participated in a mock city council meeting by acting as an injured woman who was hit by an intexticated driver. She appealed for the city council to pass an ordinance banning texting while driving. March was the first month both libraries had the new BluuBeam app activated. There were 12 hits at the Main Library and 2 at the North Branch. During March, the process of installing and implementing MobilePrint from Envisionware began. When it is completed, patrons will be able to print from their laptop computers or mobile devices to the library s internet printers. Virginia Mundt, Public Services Supervisor at the Main Library, was chosen as the new Director of Library Services with a starting date of April 1, Staff Reports: March, In the month of March, 8 volunteers contributed 122 hours at the Main Library. --The Main Library sponsored 29 children s programs this month with 453 in attendance. There were 13 children s programs presented by the North Branch in March with 99 in attendance. The Main Library provided a Dr. Seuss program and the program room was decorated in the theme of the Lorax, complete with giant Truffula trees. --There were 4,415 (including 1,008 extended sessions) computer sessions at the Main Library in the month of March and 1,360 (including 197 extended sessions) computer sessions at the North Branch Library.
3 Page 3 --In the Genealogy section, 10 researchers signed the register during the month of March. --The library s website had 6,022 visits during the month of March items were processed and added to the library s collection during March. --Mesquite library patrons checked out 128 eaudiobooks from OneClickDigital during March. -- A total of 1,491ebooks, 301 eaudiobooks and 11 videos from Overdrive were checked out during March by Mesquite patrons. There were 39 Mesquite library patrons who used Overdrive for the first time this month. There were 38 titles added to the Overdrive collection this month. --There were 126 users of the JobView kiosk and online link during the month of March. --There were 136 users for the Main Library s study rooms in March for a total of hours of use. --Seven new TexShare cards issued in March. --Virginia Mundt and Jeannie Johnson attended a City of Mesquite Communications Council meeting on March 2. --A Computer Basics class was presented at the North Branch Library on March 3 with 6 in attendance. --A Computer Basics class was held in the Gates Lab at the Main Library on March 4 with 2 students in attendance. --On March 4 Susan Harding attended a webinar on the redesigned Zinio app. This app streamlines the process for checking out and downloading our electronic magazines. It is currently available for ipads and Android phones. It will become available for the iphone and Kindle tablets in about 6 months. --The Library Book Club was cancelled March 5 due to icy roadways. --On March 6, Susan Harding participated in the City s Realtor Expo. She had literature about the library to hand out, and demonstrated many of our online services to the realtors who stopped by the library s table.
4 Page 4 --A Microsoft Word Basics class was presented at the North Branch Library on March 10 with 6 in attendance. --The Main Library held a Fancy Nancy Party on March 10. Registration was required. There were 39 in attendance. -- A Microsoft Word Basics class was presented at the Main Library on March 11 in the Gates Lab with 3 students in attendance. --On March 11 Jane Brown, Jennifer Britton and Virginia Mundt attended a training session presented by the Volunteer Services Department to learn about changing policies and procedures. Each library branch received a new Volunteer Policy Manual. --On March 12 Susan Harding held Tech Thursday at the North Branch Library. She answered questions about OverDrive ebooks and streaming videos, as well as Freegal streaming movies. --Jennifer Britton represented the North Branch Library at the Shands Elementary School career day program. Students were selected to interview people from the community and ask them questions relevant to their professions. Students received an inside look at some professions and the professionals were able to see how their jobs are viewed by elementary school students. --On March 18, the for Beginners class was held in the Gates Lab at the Main Library with 8 students in attendance. --On March 19 Susan Harding held Tech Thursday at the Main Library. She answered questions about OverDrive ebooks and demonstrated the BluuBeam app. --Virginia Mundt represented the Library on March 19 at the A.C. New Middle School Health Fair. --A Resume and Job Resources class was held in the Gates Lab at the Main Library on March 25 with 8 students in attendance. --On March 26, Joy Simmons and Jennifer Britton from the North Branch attended a class on locating reliable online health information taught at the Main Library by a librarian from the UT Southwestern Medical Center. Several Main Library staff also attended the training including Susan Harding, Virginia Mundt, Daniel Laney, Voni Robinson, Jeannie Johnson, Dawn Reneau, Karen Hipp, Chris Thomson, Ann Mezzell, Shawn Ivy, Mary Wavrusa, Alexis Bailey and Josie Salinas. There were two training sessions and the second one was open to the public. --The Teen Writing Club was held on March 28 at the Main Library with 3 in attendance.
5 Page 5 --A Building with LEGOS session was held on March 28 at the Main Library with 22 in attendance. --A party was held on March 31 for retiring library director Jeannie Johnson. There was a picnic theme with decorations and food. Speeches were given by Mayor John Monaco, City Councilmen Bruce Archer, City Manager Ted Barron, Managing Director of Administrative Services Ted Chinn, Library Technical Services Supervisor Susan Harding and retiring director Jeannie Johnson. There were approximately 75 in attendance. --The City of Mesquite s IT Department continued training staff about Security Awareness concerning cyber-crime and safety. The City s Human Resources Department also continued staff training on the new software to be used for Performance Evaluations. --Tillie Perkins created a display of materials at the North Branch Library spotlighting March as Women s History Month. Jennifer Britton created a bookmark to coincide with the display. _Virginia Mundt created a similar display at the Main Library and later in the month changed the display to highlight Texas History Month. --Jennifer Britton has been weeding the non-fiction collection at the North Branch Library. In March she began to weed the history section. --Volunteers Tom Brown and Karen Eberle began an inventory of materials at the Main Library. Beverly Hollingsworth made a motion that the meeting be adjourned. Karen Eberle made a second to the motion and the meeting adjourned.
