For your convenience, the book drop is open when the library is closed. Librarian/Archivist Cynthia Bieniek Has Retired. Please join us in extending the warmest of wishes to Cynthia Bieniek on her recent retirement. Ms. Bieniek has worked at the St. Clair Shores Public Library for 24 years and has made invaluable contributions during her time here. Our Local History Center and Genealogy Group are what they are today because of her archival expertise and passion for research. Some of her many duties included overseeing the Great Lakes and Michigan Collection, the digital archives, editing the Historical Commission s publication, Muskrat Tales and serving as Editor of the Library Newsletter. Cindy has demonstrated the finest qualities of librarianship. We are grateful for the wonderful service she provided to the community and know that many patrons will be sad to see her retire. Please join us in acknowledging Cindy for a job well done and wishing her a happy and healthy retirement! Exercise Your Mind Read! The Adult Summer Reading Program is off to a great start and there is still time to register! Registration is open through July 28 and the last day to turn in entry tickets is July 29. Stress Less with Mindfulness Join us Thursday, July 14 at 7 PM in the library s Gilstorf Meeting Room for a workshop by Kate Rettler from the Michigan State University Extension Program. Mindfulness can be defined as paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally. Research has shown that practicing mindfulness is effective in reducing stress-related symptoms, regulating emotions, and decreasing anxiety. This is a FREE workshop that will introduce the practice of mindfulness to reduce stress and improve overall health and well being. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the St. Clair Shores Public Library as part of our Adult Summer Reading Program, Exercise Your Mind. Yardeners 23rd Annual Garden Tour Join us Saturday, August 6, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Registration begins at 9:00 AM at the Selinsky-Green Farmhouse Museum. Admission for adults is $5.00, children under 12 are free. You will view some of the loveliest yards in St. Clair Shores and get gardening ideas for your gardens from the homeowners. Yardeners and Master Gardeners will also be available to answer questions. Take a few moments to tour the Museum and gardens, also take a peek at the vendors wares after you register. Adult Coloring Program The St. Clair Shores Public Library will be hosting a free adult coloring program on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at 6:30 PM. This drop in program is sponsored by our Friends of the Library and is part of our Adult Summer Reading Program, Exercise Your Mind. Coloring will take place in the William R. Gilstorf Meeting Room at the St. Clair Shores Public Library. All materials, and light refreshments, will be provided but feel free to bring your own supplies. Please contact the library at for details and information on the program or check the library s website at: The FRIENDS ACCESSORY SALE: CALL FOR ITEMS The Friends of the St. Clair Shores Library will be hosting an Accessory Sale this fall, in order to raise funds to provide additional library material to our fantastic patrons. The Friends are asking for your help encouraging friends and family to donate their gently used items such as: purses, belts, scarves, tote bags, fanny packs, hats, gloves, jewelry and watches. Men s and children s items are also welcome. There will be a designated area in the library where items can be dropped off or you can call for pick up. More information on the date and time of the Accessory Sale will be forthcoming. A BEHIND THE SEEN TALK WITH THE DIA The St. Clair Shores Cultural Committee and the Detroit Institute of Arts present Picturing Music on Monday, July 25 at 7:00 PM at the library. Exploring the presence of music in visual art heightens awareness of the role music plays across cultures and time and provides a lens through which to explore the personal, social, and creative aspects of identity. Please join us for this special presentation by the DIA Speakers Bureau and watch for future informative talks to be held every other month at the library.

You ll also have the opportunity to play some of the games we will learn about! [For all ages.] TERRIFIC TUESDAY: RERUN! July 12, 7:00 PM 8:00 PM For those families who are unable to attend Terrific Tuesdays during the day, we will have an evening repeat of GAMES OF THE AGES. [For all ages.] TERRIFIC TUESDAY: GO FOR THE GOLD! July 19, 2:00 PM 3:00 PM Explore the Summer Olympics and different sports with stories, songs, and crafts! [For all ages.] TERRIFIC TUESDAY: GET YOUR GAME ON! July 26, 2:00 PM 3:00 PM Come and play some fun games at the library! [For all ages, but parental participation is encouraged.] HUNGER GAMES Calling all tributes! Do you have what it takes to survive in the arena? Summer Reading Club members in grades six and up are invited to a Hunger Games Program on Monday, July 18 at 7:00 PM. There will be challenges, crafts, and surprises for all, plus the usual amount of fun, food, and mayhem. Don t forget to register beginning Tuesday, July 5. FALL STORYTIMES Toddler, Preschool, and Family Storytimes will return Tuesday, September 27! Check back in August for more information. Registration for Toddler Storytime begins Monday, September 12. PAWS FOR READING Reading is even more fun when you read with a dog! To help you keep up your reading skills, Paws For Reading will continue on Thursdays from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM through Thursday, August 25. You can read to one of our friendly therapy dogs; they love to meet kids and be read to. Come and make their day and meet a new friend! FOR TOTS 1st Stop and Tot Time continue throughout the summer each Wednesday and Thursday morning beginning at 10:00 AM. Your wee ones will enjoy the songs, nursery rhymes, stories, and bubbles at 1st Stop before we bring out the toys at 10:30 AM for Tot Time. These free programs are for children from birth through age four. SUMMER READING CLUB PARTY Come celebrate the end of another summer of reading fun at the library! The Summer Reading Club parties will be held on Tuesday, August 2 at 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Baffling Bill and Gus the Bunny will entertain you with wondrous magic tricks, plus plenty of laughs and a few surprises! Choose to attend either the afternoon or the evening party. Free tickets will be available to Summer Reading Club members beginning Monday, July 11. You can still register for Summer Reading Club through Friday, July 22, but the last day to turn in entry forms and claim weekly prizes is Monday, August 1. ALL DAY LEGO BLOCK PARTY Do you love LEGOS and building? Come show off your skills at the all day LEGO Block Party on Tuesday, August 9. We ll provide the LEGOS ; you bring your creativity and show us what you can do! We will have a few fun challenges, too! Children of all ages are invited to participate between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM. No registration is required for this event.

We welcome visitors, and our agenda includes an opportunity for you to comment. We also have room for additional Directors. If you are interested in joining and sharing your talents, please come to the next meeting on Tuesday, August 23, We are a volunteer organization which supports the operations of the library, sponsors library programs, and raises funds to meet special library needs. WINNER OF MERIT AWARD The Friends of St. Clair Shores Public Library is a proud winner of the Friends of Michigan Libraries 2015 Merit Award for our Buy-A-Chair Program. Board members Janet Horan, Mary Lou Britton, Ann Powell, Jan Drewek and Library Director Rosemary Orlando attended the Friends of Michigan Libraries annual meeting in Saginaw in April, and were presented with a commemorative plaque and a check for $400. KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS For the fiscal year ending 3/31/2016, Kroger donated a total of $ to the Friends of St. Clair Shores Public Library. Kroger just notified us that we will receive a check for $ in June. 5 Historical News Arthur M. Woodford LOCAL HISTORY CENTER HOURS of Operation Renovations on the Local History Center are nearing completion. Please call the information desk at , ext 278, or check the website for further information. Tuesdays 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM Thursdays 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM Fridays July 8 & 22 & August 12 & 26 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM The Local History Center is open the second and fourth Fridays of the month from Memorial Day to Labor Day. GENEALOGY NEWS The St. Clair Shores Genealogy Group meets the fourth Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM, January through June, September and October. All meetings are held in the Arthur M. Woodford Local History Center unless otherwise noted in the newsletter and on the library web site. All programs are free and open to the public. Beginning genealogists are always welcome. Please visit the library website for information on upcoming meetings. Museum Hours The Selinsky-Green Farmhouse Museum is open on Wednesdays from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. These hours are in effect until after Labor Day. Can t make it on Wednesdays? You can always schedule a free special tour or rent the museum for a small group. Call (586) for more information. When you visit you will learn about daily life in rural St. Clair Shores in the late 19th century and the early 20th century; how a farmhouse would have been furnished, the daily chores, popular pastimes, and more. You will also learn why the farmhouse is architecturally significant. Visiting the Selinsky-Green Farmhouse is a great way to gain some insight into what daily life was like for your ancestors. RAFFLE TICKETS AVAILABLE The Historical Society of St. Clair Shores is sponsoring a raffle to be drawn at 4:30 PM on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at the Lac Ste. Claire Fine Art Fair, to be held at Veterans Memorial Park, Jefferson Avenue at Masonic Boulevard. First Prize is a queen-size quilt. Second Prize is a framed reproduction photograph of the Shores Inn c1940. The quilt and art work are on display now at the St. Clair Shores Public Library. Tickets are $1.00 each and are available for purchase at the Library and the Selinsky-Green Farmhouse Museum during regular hours of operation. Proceeds benefit the projects of the Historical Society of St. Clair Shores. White Elephant Trunk Sale Mark your calendar for Saturday, August 13 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and reserve your spot at the Selinsky-Green Farmhouse Museum for the White Elephant Trunk Sale. Bring your own tables, chairs and gently used items to sell. There are sites available on the museum grounds and reserved parking slots. One slot is $20.00 and a double slot is $ Registration begins Friday, July 1. Folk Music by Jim Daniska Folk musician, Jim Daniska, will be playing outdoors this summer in the backyard of the Selinsky-Green Farmhouse Museum on Thursdays: July 7 & 21; and Aug 4 & 18 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, weather permitting. Please call the library at (586) ext. 278 to confirm that the scheduled performance will take place. He will be playing music ranging from Pete Seeger to Woody Guthrie to Bob Dylan. Mr. Daniska asks that you come prepared to join in singing some of your old favorites and maybe even some new ones. There is no charge to attend; please bring your own lawn chairs.
