BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES APPROVAL Approve the Library Board of Trustees meeting minutes of May 22, FINANCIAL REPORT Approve the Financial Reports for the month of May GIFTS Accept gifts received by the San Mateo Public Library during the month of May PUBLIC COMMENT Persons wishing to comment on any item not appearing on the agenda may submit to the Executive Assistant a Request to Speak form. State law prevents the Board from taking action on any matter not on this agenda. Comments may be referred to staff for further review. Persons speaking will not have their name recorded in the minutes. COMMUNICATIONS 4. INVITATION FROM THE TOWN OF HILLSBOROUGH Hillsborough Mayor Marie Chuang has invited San Mateo City Librarian Ben Ocón and Burlingame City Librarian Brad McCulley to take part in a joint presentation of library services being provided to the residents of Hillsborough. The joint presentation is scheduled for Monday, September 11, 2017 (6:00 p.m.) at the Hillsborough Town Hall Council Chambers, 1600 Floribunda Avenue, Hillsborough, CA OLD BUSINESS [None] 5. ROTATION OF OFFICER ROLES FOR The Library Board will rotate the officer roles for : Ms. De Winter will end her term as President; Mr. Hill will start his term as President; Kathy Shields will start her term as Vice-President; and Dr. Chen will start his term as Secretary.

2 NEW BUSINESS 6. PERSONNEL UPDATE Mr. Ocón will introduce Donya Sultani, the newly appointed Literacy Program Coordinator of Project Read. 7. SOCIAL MEDIA UPDATE Librarians Alison Day and Matt Conciatori will share an update on the Library s social media presence (Instagram & Facebook) CUSTOMER SATISFACTION SURVEY Mr. Ocón will share highlights of the 2017 Customer Satisfaction Survey. 9. CALENDAR OF LIBRARY BOARD MEETING DATES IN The Library Board will approve the calendar of meetings in fiscal year RECAP OF PRESENTATION TO SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION Mr. Hill and Mr. Ocón will share a recap of the Library s presentation to the Senior Citizens Commission (May 8, 2017). 10 Library Board Rotation System [Adopted by the Library Board, May 21, 2012] The leadership of the Library Board is comprised of a President, Vice President and Secretary. Each officer serves a one-year term. The officer positions are determined using a rotational sequence that takes place following the May meeting (because June 10 th is the date that terms end for some Trustees). The rotation allows each Trustee to serve in each of the leadership roles during their term(s) on the Library Board. Rotation sequence: a.) 16 City Librarian s Report June 2017 Virtual Reality Experience Project The San Mateo Public Library has been selected to participate in the California Virtual Reality Experience Project. The project is produced by the California State Library; and will be administered by CALIFA and coordinated by VARLibraries. The project is the first step in building a library network of best practices and experiences in the immersive learning environments of Virtual and Augmented Reality. The project is made possible through a partnership with virtual reality technology leader Oculus. Access to this emerging technology will soon be made available for community members to experience at the Library. More details forthcoming. Bilingual Books Grant The Library has received a $7,500 grant from the California State Library s Immigrant Alliance Project to purchase bilingual books for children. California is home to more than 10 million immigrants. Nearly one in four of the foreign-born population in the U.S. lives in our state. Public libraries play a key role in welcoming and educating immigrants. The Immigrant Alliance Project was created to support libraries as they create, enhance, and extend services to immigrants and their families. Through the Immigrant Alliance Project, this summer public libraries will have the opportunity to obtain resources to update and expand their bilingual book collections for children in pre-kindergarten through the 6 th grade. Passport Acceptance Service This summer, the Library will expand the Passport Acceptance Service by offering the service on two additional evenings (Wednesday and Thursdays). The Passport Service was established in 2007 as a revenue enhancing measure for the City during a difficult economy. Since its inception, the service has processed 16,936 passport applications and 7,818 photos. This level of service has generated $531, in revenue during the first 10 years ( ).
