If discussion is desired, that item may be removed and considered separately. 1. BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES APPROVAL Approve the Library Board of Trustees meeting minutes of June 26, FINANCIAL REPORT Approve the Financial Reports for the month of June GIFTS Accept gifts received by the San Mateo Public Library during the month of June PUBLIC COMMENT Persons wishing to comment on any item not appearing on the agenda may submit to the Executive Assistant a Request to Speak form. State law prevents the Board from taking action on any matter not on this agenda. Comments may be referred to staff for further review. Persons speaking will not have their name recorded in the minutes. COMMUNICATIONS 4. ANNUAL BOARDS/COMMISSIONS DINNER FUNCTION City Clerk Patrice Olds has announced the date and theme of this year s annual Boards & Commissions Dinner function. A Commissioners Disco Party has been scheduled for Friday, September 8 th, 6:00 p.m., in the City Hall Atrium. More details will be forthcoming. OLD BUSINESS [None]

2 NEW BUSINESS 5. COMMUNITY OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES (AUG.-SEPT.) City Librarian Ben Ocón will share information about upcoming community outreach opportunities to promote the Library and will invite Board members to consider participating: National Night Out (Tues., Aug. 1, King Center), Resource Fair (Fri., Aug. 4, Senior Center), Autumn Moon Festival (Central Park, Sun., Sept. 24), Health & Wellness Fair (Sat., Sept. 30, Senior Center). 6. LIBRARY BILL OF RIGHTS Deputy City Librarian James Moore will present an overview of the American Library Association s Library Bill of Rights. 7. TOUR OF NEW MATERIALS HANDLING SYSTEM Supervising Library Assistant Nicol White will conduct a tour of the new materials handling system. 8. TOUR OF THE NEW CITIZENSHIP CORNER City Librarian Ben Ocon will conduct a tour of the new Citizenship Corner. REPORTS 9. LIBRARY BOARD PRESIDENT 10. CITY LIBRARIAN 11. AGENDA TOPICS FOR FUTURE BOARD MEETINGS Library Board members will propose agenda topics for future Library Board meetings. A majority vote is necessary for a topic to be added to future agendas. Any supplemental material distributed to members of the Board of Trustees after the posting of this agenda will be available for public review in the Library s Administrative office. 11 Library Bill of Rights The American Library Association affirms that all libraries are forums for information and ideas, and that the following basic policies should guide their services. I. Books and other library resources should be provided for the interest, information, and enlightenment of all people of the community the library serves. Materials should not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation. II. III. IV. Libraries should provide materials and information presenting all points of view on current and historical issues. Materials should not be proscribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval. Libraries should challenge censorship in the fulfillment of their responsibility to provide information and enlightenment. Libraries should cooperate with all persons and groups concerned with resisting abridgment of free expression and free access to ideas. V. A person s right to use a library should not be denied or abridged because of origin, age, background, or views. VI. Libraries which make exhibit spaces and meeting rooms available to the public they serve should make such facilities available on an equitable basis, regardless of the beliefs or affiliations of individuals or groups requesting their use. Adopted June 19, Amended October 14, 1944; June 18, 1948; February 2, 1961; June 27, 1967; and January 23, 1980; inclusion of age reaffirmed January 23, 1996, by the ALA Council.

12 Stepping On Fall Prevention Workshops City Librarian s Report July 2017 The Library will collaborate with the San Mateo County Fall Prevention Coalition to host a seven-week series of workshops every Tuesday (10 am-12 noon) starting on August 15 th through September 26 th. The workshops will be conducted by an occupational therapist and are designed to help older adults reduce their risk of falling. Attendees will learn to improve balance and strength with simple exercises, home modifications and safe footwear. SimplyE The San Mateo Public Library has been selected to participate in the SimplyE initiative through a grant from the California Library Services Act (CLSA) sponsored by the California State Library and the Pacific Library Partnership. SimplyE will simplify the library patron s e-reading experience. Patrons will not need to move between multiple apps to find and read library e-books. SimplyE will make finding and reading e-books easier. KittyCon On Saturday, July 29 th, the Library will host KittyCon a celebration of cats in collaboration with the Peninsula Humane Society, Cat Town, and local authors/artists. Special activities include the following: Children s author Deborah Underwood will discuss her book Here Comes Teacher Cat, 11 am, Oak Rm. Cat Town, a nonprofit, will present information on how they assist & rescue cats, 12:30 pm, Oak Rm. Make Your Own Cat Ears craft activity & cat face painting, 1-4 pm, Laurel Rm. Meet Yoda the Therapy Cat from the Peninsula Humane Society.1:30-2:30 pm, Cedar Rm. Cat Cartooning with Brian, 2-3 pm & 3:30-4:30 pm, Oak Rm. 13 Dewey Award Winners (4 th Qtr., April-June) Congratulations to the following library employees who were acknowledged by coworkers during the 4 th Quarter (Apr.-Jun.) with a Dewey Award for their exceptional work. The Dewey Award was established by the Library department in 2013 as an award that library staff can bestow on fellow coworkers. The award is named in honor of Melvil Dewey ( ), the renown library pioneer and educator who invented the Dewey Decimal Classification system.
