1 THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE FAIRPORT PUBLIC LIBRARY WAS HELD ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2018 PRESENT Belinda O Brien Dave Giambattista Liz King Suzanne Stockman Chris Mirrione OTHERS Betsy Gilbert Kristin Gallagher Pat Rapp The meeting was called to order at 6:31 p.m. by Dave Giambattista, President. 30 MINUTE PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD There were no public comments. REVIEW OF AGENDA There were no changes to the agenda. PREVIOUS MINUTES A motion was made by Belinda O Brien and seconded by Chris Mirrione to approve the minutes from the September 2018 Board meeting. TREASURER S REPORT A motion was made by Suzanne Stockman and seconded by Liz King to accept the Treasurer s Report for August CLAIMS A motion was made by Belinda O Brien and seconded by Chris Mirrione to approve Claims as follows: Ingram: $ 6, Utilities: $ 3, Regular: $ 21, Total of all Claims: $ 31, (See attachments.) STAFF REPORT Children s Librarian, Anne Hicks, discussed outreach she does on behalf of the children s department. Ms. Hicks stated that storytimes at the library are well attended. However, many children are unable to attend because they have working parents. Ms. Hicks visits six day care centers per month to provide storytime for these toddler and preschool children, and includes books, songs, rhymes, felt board activities, and music. She gives handouts for the parents so they will know
2 what happened in storytime, and these also include promotions for upcoming events at the library. DIRECTOR S REPORT Ms. Gilbert stated that she received a letter in the mail from the Fairport Harbor Public Library. They came across a box of thank you cards that were mistakenly printed Fairport Public Library and they offered to mail them to Ms. Gilbert for use by the Board and the library. Ms. Gilbert stated that Tori Reilly has started a new book discussion group called Hearts and Daggers. The group meets monthly and alternates between romance and mysteries. Ms. Gilbert stated that the citizenship classes are going well. There were eight people in attendance today and someone from Learning Links stayed with the children while their parents were in the classes. Ghost walks have been very popular. This year, they are being held twice per week and all sessions have waiting lists. COMMITTEE REPORTS Budget No report. Personnel Mrs. Stockman stated that the committee continues to discuss policies. Long Range Plan No report. Fairport Library Council No report. Facilities & Services Mrs. Stockman stated that the committee will meet in two weeks. AD HOC COMMITTEES Memorial Committee Mrs. Stockman stated that the committee is trying to meet with Randy Sickler to discuss the possibility of placing a window in the teen room. NEW BUSINESS A motion was made by Belinda O Brien and seconded by Liz King to approve the hiring of JoAnn Santizo to the position of Page Supervisor. A motion was made by Liz King and seconded by Chris Mirrione to approve a one hour delay in opening the library on Wednesday, December 12, 2018, for a staff event. A motion was made by Suzanne Stockman and seconded by Chris Mirrione to declare items surplus and disposable. (See attachment.)
3 OLD BUSINESS A motion was made by Belinda O Brien and seconded by Liz King to approve the updated Holiday and Close Dates for (See attachment.) PRESIDENT S COMMENTS Mr. Giambattista stated that it was great to have Anne Hicks attend the meeting and inform the Board about the fantastic outreach the children s room is doing. He also stated that he is happy to see the Citizenship and English classes are going well. Mrs. Stockman informed the Board that former Board member, Marylu Andrews, passed away last week. The dates in blue are days when the library closes early. For summer holidays, the library will close on any Saturday adjacent to a holiday. This is always the case for Memorial Day and Labor Day. In 2019, July 4 th is on a Thursday. The recommendation is to assign a floating holiday to Friday July 5 rd and close on Saturday July 6 t. In addition to the seven assigned holidays, there are two floating holidays. One is assigned by the board when there is a logical place to add it, which is the recommendation for July 5 rd this year. The other is taken at the staff member s discretion.
