1 November 10, 2016 Jim Ives, Editor Thursday s Meeting Summary The meeting was called to order by President Regan Ford followed by the singing of the National Anthem. Diane Ives gave the invocation. Our guest today speaker Ken Fouty was introduced by Jessica Haddad and was greeted in the usual manner. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Regan acknowledged all members who are Veterans, especially those in attendance today Regan congratulated Jim Thorpe who was recently elected to the Dearborn Public Schools Board of Education and as a board trustee for Henry Ford College. Jim Thorpe thanked all Rotarians who assisted in his campaign. Lee Hollmann was recently in Chicago and visited a Rotary Club while there. He shared that the club had a tradition of sharing a Happy Moment which came at the cost of $1.00. Lee s Happy Moment regarded the recent Chicago Cubs World Series win and how the team, after losing the first 3 games, inspired the players with the theme song from the movie Rocky. And Lee paid his $1.00 Bob Gleichauf reminded members that there are still time slots open for Santa Snaps. Moving decorative items from storage to the shelter is after today s meeting. Ray Trudeau announced that nurses are needed to join the medical trip to Nicaragua on March The only cost is air fare. The holiday gift trip is January 4-11, Jim Mackey conducted the 50/50 raffle. Regan drew the winning ticket for $18.00 Today s winner was our friendly and efficient Park Place server. Colleen Neiman introduced today s speaker, Ken Fouty, from Samaritas. Samaritis, along with other organizations, is part of a global humanitarian effort to assist in the resettlement of refugees. Ken has a background in law enforcement as well as the clergy. Refugees are people of all ages who are forced from their own countries by war or political unrest and who cannot return for fear of persecution because of their race, ethnicity, religion or political affiliations. Many spend years in refugee camps before they are granted permission to leave. Samaritas is the largest resettlement agency in Michigan. Regarding the crisis in Syria that began in 2011, the citizens demanded democracy. Resistance and persecution led to civil strife. Many of these citizens entered refugee camps throughout the Middle East. Refugee status is granted by the United Nations. If the request is to enter the United States the request goes to the United States Refugee Admissions Program, which is part of the Department of State. Refugees undergo a more rigorous screening than anyone else allowed into the United States. Vetting is carried out by multiple agencies. The individuals and families that enter come prepared to work hard and give back to this country. Airfare that was provided must be paid back within four years of arrival and the compliance with the requirement is very high. In Wayne County most of the resettled refugees are from Iraq, although the numbers from Syria re increasing due to the ongoing crisis. The core resettlement services provided by Samaritas are meeting the individual or family at the airport, providing a cultural orientation, assistance with obtaining a Social Security Card, registering children in school, enrolling in driver s education and getting a license, getting yet another health assessment, locating and enrolling in English As A Second Language (ESL) classes, employment services, and assistance with long term integration into the community. Funding comes from the public sector, individual and group funders/supporters, and the private sector. There are also School Impact Services provided for schools that serve refugee students and special assistance for Unaccompanied Refugee Minors (URM). Also since many refugees have lived in camps for as many as 3 years before leaving or may have been tortured, health and educational issues exist among the population. Grants are available to help mitigate the potential damage resulting from this. President Regan thanked Mr. Fouty and presented him with the traditional book plate to sign. The meeting was adjourned in the usual manner. This year we needed to freashen up the set by relighting and decorating the trees, as well as re-wrap the boxes for display presents. Special thanks to Roger and Lenice Miller, Neil Allen, Margaret Blohm, Bob Gleichauf, Merritt Robertson and daughter Kathleen, Kathy Gapa, Diane and Jim Ives, and from the Fairlane Sunrise Club President Carolyn Robinson, Jim Perri, Howard Andrews, and John Williams for their help in re-trimming the trees, and re-wrapping the display boxes last Saturday at Spectrum Signs.
