1 January, 2017 Page 1 of 7 President s Message Welcome to 2017 a New Year filled with promise! Every new year begins with promise and hope. How the promise is fulfilled often depends upon our actions as individuals and as a community. I have great hope for the community of the Regina Whittlers and Woodcarvers! We can build upon the successes of the past and continue to support and develop excellence in the wood arts in the following ways: We can welcome more new members and help one another to learn. We can support classes held in Regina, such as the possibility of the carving of a chickadee with Emile Gaudet this January (described later in this newsletter). We can encourage one another to travel to classes, offering rides and companionship as well as helping with the costs of travel. We can work together to plan our annual Wood Show, scheduled for April 22 nd and 23 rd. If you are asked to be part of planning, please respond positively. We can offer ideas and suggestions to the Executive (made up of members who have been willing to give their time and energy to help the Club). We can be prepared to help out when new ideas are implemented. Please begin the year with our Club by attending our Annual Meeting, to be held at the Balkwill Centre on January 12 at 7 pm. There will be changes in the Executive. My term has come to close and I am delighted that Peter Dielschneider has been willing to put his name forward as the next president. We also have vacancies for Secretary and for Newsletter Editor. As well, Herb is looking for someone who would be willing to join him this year to learn about Programming so that he could pass along this responsibility next year. Please realize that if you are asked to let your name stand for one of the vacant positions, this is a compliment to you. If you are able, please give it a try. It s a great time to gather, carve, and share. The odd numbered months are formal business meetings plus casual carving. Information about programs on even months will be distributed. 5 January, 2017 Page 5 of 7 RWWC Club Happenings Carve a Chickadee with Power Emile Gaudet is offering to teach a Power Carving Class this winter. The class will cover 3 weekends. The dates are Jan 20, 21, 22; Jan 27, 28, 29 and Feb 3, 4, 5. The times will be Friday evening from 7-9 and Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm. The class will be held at Neald Glass, 1450 Reynolds ST. The project will be a Chickadee and at the end of the class you will have a completed project including painting. Two weekends will be spent on the carving and one weekend will be spent on painting. There will be an additional cost of approx. $25.00 for the blank, feet, and eyes payable to Emile. In order for the class to go ahead we need some more participants. There are currently 3 registrations and we really need 5 to make the class viable. The cost will be $250. Please collect pictures of Chickadees and think about a mount for your bird. If you do not have power equipment don't let that stop you. Talk to Emile and see if something can be worked out. As well as power tools, you are going to need a pencil, a ruler, and a set of calipers. Please let Herb Klassen know if you are interested.

6 January, 2017 Page 6 of 7 RWWC Club Meeting Minutes Regina Whittlers and Woodcarvers November 10, 2016 Present: Linda Anderson, Leo Belanger, Wayne Cann, Bill Dearborn, Gerald Ford, Emile Gaudet, Wes Hovind, Herb Klassen, Samir Makar, Ken Smith, and Alex Tivas. Introductions We went around the tables with each member renditions of anything in your life (art, carving, etc.) that really pleased you. Everything from attendance at Shareshop, to attacking unfinished projects, to completing painting projects to, wood burning, to fixing a crack in a bowl, to having a carved cane signed by George Reed. Sept 8 th Minutes Motion: That the minutes of September 8, 2016 be approved. (Bill Dearborn/Emile Gaudet) Carried. Christmas Gathering - On December 8th the club will hold our annual Christmas Gathering at the Neil Balkwill Centre. Motion: To allow Herb and Nadine Klassen to spend up to $ on food, treats and refreshments for this gathering. (Emile Gaudet/Leo Belanger) Carried. Special Note - There will be an informational talk on Exotic Woods at Windsor Plywood from 7 to 9 pm on November 15, Information/questions/concerns from or for: Treasurer At the moment the club has 51 members and $ balance in the bank. This is about $ loss for the year but the Shareshop cost was $ and our balance still reflects Doris Sheldon's Class Registrations in 2015 and costs in Also Membership fees of $20.00 for 2017 start in January, Programming Emile Gaudet will be holding his class on "Power Carving a Chickadee" after Christmas. Comfort Bird Carving Bee will be held on November 26, Beginners Classes were conducted - Bill Dearborn had two groups of four and Bob Dawson had a group of four. Both Bob and Bill are ready to pass the hat on to other members to conduct beginner classes. We must again THANK Tory for the use of his shop for our many carving activities.

Website Bill Dearborn related some interesting data from our website for the year as of November 9, This data is as follows: 5,170 unique visitors 10,000 hits to our website On October 25, 26 and 27 our website had many, many hits from the European Union Most people that visited our website were Apple users - Safari main browser, then Firefox, and then Internet Explorer. Our website cost is $49.01 for the year... Newsletter Samir stated that after five years he would very much like to step aside and let someone else take over. Samir also recommended that all someone needs is a little knowledge of Microsoft Word, and cut and paste know how. A very BIG THANK YOU to Samir for his five years with the Newsletter. Secretary Wayne also stated that he would very much like to step aside and let someone else step up. President Everyone is invited to the annual Christmas Gathering on Dec 8 th, Please bring your wives, husbands, significant others. There will be a Display Table for those wanting to show off their recent accomplishments. There will also be an exchange Table - bring a project that you created and it will be exchanged for someone else's project. Other business None There was a Show and Tell after the Meeting.
