Pleasanton Senior Center From The Pres By Bob Kehl Happy New Year!!!!! Here we are again, starting another new year of carving forthe Tri Valley Carvers. Before going into all the fun things for 2014, I first want to talk about ending 2013 this last December with our annual Christmas luncheon. We had great fellowship, food, fun, and a wonderful auction. Twenty nine members of our carving family attended and our auction netted over $445 for the club. What a wonderful event to end another great year for TVC! A merry Christmas was wished to all who participated. Many thanks to Ken for managing the challenging bidding, Mike Pocha for keeping track of the highly active bidding and collections, and to Paul Fackler for setting up the luncheon arrangements. As we begin this year, our first business meeting will be held at the Pleasanton Senior Center on Jan11th. The meeting will start at 9am with our usual pre-meeting carving/visiting followed by the meeting start at 10:30. We have several new members to meet and get acquainted, so make sure you attend. Again, the meeting time is 9-12am on Saturday January 11th. We have a lot to look forward to in this New Year beginning with the annual Oakhurst Wood Carvers Rendezvous the week of April 5th to April 13th. Information for this event is available from the rendezvous chairman, Larry Smith Larry s address has changed to woodtat@icloud.com. I have application forms and details for this event. The Sacramento wood show will be held again this year on the first weekend in May, May 3rd -4th with set-up on Friday, May 2nd. The Capital Wood Carvers in Sacramento really appreciate our Tri Valley woodcarvers teaching soap carving to the kids in attendance, as it adds so much to the show. The Alameda County Fair dates are June 18h-July 6th. The fair theme is taste the red white and blue. Those members who want to work on a theme project can be thinking about it now. There are, of course, the preparations for entries, so it s time to think about what to carve for judging and what the club display is going to be this year. We will be holding the soap-carving event again on Kid s days. We really received high appreciation from the kids, parents and the Fair management. Continued Next Page

2 January 2014 TVC Newsletter Page 2 From The Pres cont. Our participation in the annual Art under the Oaks event is set for this year July, 19-20th. We are in the same building as last year. Perhaps, the club can discuss a theme or project to present for this event or we can keep it an individual sales event, as we did last year. Last year was our first offering of kids soap carving for this event. It was very well received and a lot of fun. Depending on our TVC soap carving volunteers, we will offer soap carving again this year. TVC s annual wood carving show will be at the Veteran s hall in Pleasanton on September 13th-14th. We will use Friday, the 12th for early setup and entry for wood carvers again this year. This year marks the club s 42nd anniversary, so the wood show will be not only a great showing of our carvings, but a wonderful celebration of our club and achievements. These events are some of the highlights for the year. We will be continuing with our school teaching sessions and the Veteran s Cane projects. Make sure you keep up with the Club details in the Mark your calendars section of the newsletter. MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Wood Inventory Basswood available at Sr. Ctr. THINK ABOUT S by Joan Cousins, Bulletin Board [:] Hoping everyone is doing OK as we enter into the New Year. No new news received otherwise and you know the old saying, No new is good news. [:] The Weather folks say this is the driest season in recorded history, be sure to water your outside vegetation as well as keeping yourself hydrated! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL AND TO ALL A SAFE, HEALTHY AND WONDROUS JOURNEY THROUGH 2014! Did you find the New Year Baby? Oh the tangles web we weave when first we practice to deceive! [:] REMINDER: TVC Annual memberships are DUE. ($ individual & $ family.) Pay Mike Pocha: 1176 Farmington Way, Livermore, CA Phone: [:] WOOD INFO: For carvers, turners and burners, it is important to know about the wood you are dealing with. You invest a lot of time in these art forms and have to deal with unseen flaws within the wood. Angiosperms (Hard woods) are trees that lose their leaves, usually in autumn. Deciduous trees have support fibers and vessels making a conduit for sap to the leaves. The thickness of these support fibers determines the density of the wood. Gymnosperms (Soft woods) usually are the conebearing trees. They have tracheids, which act as a conduit for the sap. Thick tracheids support the tree while thin tracheids conduct the sap. Many soft woods, such as yellow pine, are harder than some hardwoods, such as Philippine mahogany. Spring woods have large pores, due to the faster rate of growth during that season when water and climate are friendlier to growth. Summer wood, with less precipitation, is slow growing, creating a much denser wood. Look at a cross-cut, wider/lighter colored rings indicate fast growth and softer wood, while darker/narrower rings indicate slow growth and harder wood. Carvers and turners look for the wood grain that will enhance their art piece while burners usually look for more gradual, uniform grain like Birch. As with all wood working, use caution and wear adequate protection, we only get 1 set of lungs! [:] Send/give YOUR NEWS; items WANTED; items FOR SALE; QUESTIONS; INTERESTING INFO; etc to Mike Pocha, Editor and Treasurer, and he will post it here on YOUR Club Bulletin Board for all to see! This is YOUR information site so take advantage of it AND it is ALSO SEEN by OTHER CLUBS OH, such a FREE deal!
