I have enjoyed being part of the club for six or seven years. For the past two years I have been the vice-president. This year I have the honor of being president. The DuPage Woodworkers is fortunate to have a strong board, good direction, enjoyable activities and programs and a club that provides skill building opportunities. The breadth of knowledge within the club is quite impressive, as is the willingness of our members to share that knowledge. As stated earlier, it has been a pleasure to be a member of the DuPage Woodworkers. I wish that I would have joined the club much earlier. Which brings me to encouraging you, our members, to reach out and give that same opportunity to others. Let your friends, neighbors and others, who would enjoy learning and participating in the club's activities, to be informed about the club. Invite them to view our news letters or attend a meeting as our guest. I hope to see and meet all of our members at our monthly meetings and activities. I look forward to another great year with the DuPage Woodworkers. Happy New Year. Ed Buhot Secretary s Report Board Meeting January 5, 2015 Ed Buhot called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Present were Bert LeLoup, Bruce Kinney, John Moodie, Lee Nye, Keith Rosche, Al Reiman, Mike Kalscheur, Bill Hochmuth, Will Richards, Eleanore Richards, Peter D Attomo, Al Cheeks, and Jerry Johnson. Reminder: Any club member is invited to attend board meetings. Minutes of the December meeting and the treasurer s December report were approved. Lee presented an analysis of dues revenue and year-end net operating income for the years showing nice growth from 2009 to 2011 and then a modest fluctuation in the succeeding three years. Bill offered that the growth in the first three years was tied to the large number of publicity outlets we had contacted during that period. Bill will provide a list of most of those to Keith for current use. January 2015, Vol. 22 Issue 1 Page 1

2 Lee also led a discussion of his initial budget proposal for The budget for 2015 was approved with only minor changes from the budget for Due to Lee s unavail- ity to present the budget at the February general meeting it will be presented in March. Ed welcomed the new members to the board and thanked the returning members for their continuing service. Ed further remarked that he would like the club to focus on this year by reaching out to such organizations as College Of DuPage, local high schools, and others. The objective is to nurture the interest in woodworking. He would also like to try different things to increase the participation in the From Our Workshop. Committee Reports Library Will will be continuing the effort to modernize the library by culling unused and out of date item and look for meaningful acquisitions. Prizes Al Cheeks was unable to make the November meeting and those items will be carried into the new year. Programs Bill has programs confirmed for January and February. Jerry provided the contact info for the husband and wife team who presented a furniture restoration program several years ago. Membership Mike is making good progress in taking over the programs and files from Bruce. It was reaffirmed that he has the responsibility and authority to filter items submitted to him to be distributed to the general membership. Activities Peter has two shop tours already lined up for 2015: Wayne Maier on January 10 from 9:00 to 11:00 and Fred Rizza in February date TBD. Toys Al Reiman confirmed that we received at least 2456 toys at the November meeting. The quantity actually received was somewhat higher as a few providers came without checking in. Over forty members participated in the program. All organizations that donated material for use in making the toys have received thank-you letters. Old Business Ed printed labels to be used to cover the name of the outgoing Membership chair on the club brochure. They have worked out very well. The project to record and publish the general meeting program was once again laid to rest with just too many obstacles to warrant devoting the scarce resources. John Moodie put together an excellent discussion guide for a potential woodworking competition for club members. Due to the lateness of the meeting, the weather outside, and the wide-ranging, comprehensive guide, the item was deferred until the February board meeting. The meeting adjourned at 8:35 p.m. Respectfully submitted: Jerry Johnson, Secretary Bill Hockmuth Lee on Leigh Activities The DuPage Woodworkers January program will be presented by member Lee Nye. Anyone who's been fortunate enough to visit Lee's home to wander through the rooms and see the many pieces of beautiful furniture he s made would have to assume he knew quite a bit about joinery. His most recent piece, a stunning secretary made from Cherry only supports this assumption. Lee will present an overview of pros and cons about dovetails in general; express his opinion (note opinion) on jig cut versus hand cut dovetails and provide some rules and tips about using these tools. (After having taken several hand cut dovetail classes I've come away secure in the knowledge that I should never again hand cut dovetails.) A more in-depth presentation of the basics of the Leigh Dovetail Jig will follow; questions are always welcome. I'm looking forward to a great program. Acquisition of the new projector is complete. The surplus projector will be offered for sale to the Fox Valley club. The Christmas party was enjoyed by 53 members and their guests. Each of the guests received a hand-crafted wood gift. Ed is in the final stages of creating a special program and display for the Warrenville Library. The woodworking items will be on display in January and the presentation will occur on February 3. Bill Hochmuth Program Chair Logo Cloting Caps are $15 and polo shirts are $20. We now have long sleeve Ts January 2015, Vol. 22, Issue 1 Page 2

Our regular meetings are once a month for about 2 1/2 hours. Meetings (usually the fourth Wednesday of the month) consist of some announcements about activities, a short discussion of any woodworking problems that members want to ask about, a drawing for woodworking prizes, and a presentation on some aspect of woodworking. If you are interested in joining the DuPage Woodworkers, you are invited to attend a meeting. If you become a member, dues are twenty-five dollars per year. Membership entitles you to attend meetings, to go on field trips (shop visits, woodworking businesses, etc.), and a discount at several local woodworking supply companies.
