1 Bell Woodworking Club N 99th Avenue Sun City, AZ (623) Monday Friday: 8 am 4 pm Saturday: 8 am - Noon December 2016 Issue Member of the Month Roger Clause I was born in Springfield, Illinois on December 12th 1936 to Lillian and Arthur Clause. I have one older brother Jerry and one older sister Shirley. I graduated from Springfield High School in June of In June of 1956 I moved to Chicago to get into the printing trade. Several of us guys went together and opened a print shop in In 1967 I went out on my own and landed a job with J. S. Paluch. This company specializes in printing of church bulletins. During my time at Paluch, I was the plant superintended in the Chicago and Schiller Park plant and at the same time opened plants in California, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Milwaukee, and Florida was the plant manager of all locations. I spent six months on active duty and seven years in the Army Reserve. I meet Karen Joy Carro in 1959 and we were married on January 28, Our first child, Cindy, was born on December 17th 1961 and our son, Roger Jr. was born October 21st Four years later, on October 6th 1967 we had twin boys, Dean and Scott. Karen and I celebrated our 55th wedding anniversary this year. We now have one grandson two granddaughters and two great grandsons. In October of 1995 Karen and I moved to Sun City. Karen is involved in craft work and plays golf where as I am into the woodshop and also golf. Roger has served t he club as Treasurer for four years and as a member of the Board and continues as assistant to the Treasurer. He also manages the soft drink concession and manages the club s participation in the Bell Center Farmers Market on Thursday s. He is also very active as a monitor and a mentor for lathe projects. Thank you Roger for being active in our club and helping out where needed. Contact Roger Clause or a monitor at the shop for size and availability. Shirts are $20 with logo, $12 without logo and if you have a shirt, a logo can be embroidered for $10. Don t just sit there.. Be a monitor Monitor Report The club is looking for new officers for the coming elections Consider running for one of the board positions to keep the club running. Bell Social Hall #1 Starting at 12:30 I would like to thank everyone who stepped up to be monitors for the year For all monitors, I will be contacting you to make sure you will be monitors for the coming year, I also want to verify when you snow birds will be leaving in the spring and when you will be returning to Sun City. Some I have contacted and have you on the schedule. Lately we have been finding equipment that was not cleaned after use. Also, saw blades have been left on the table saws and drill bits left in the machines. If you see items left at a machine, the machine has not been cleaned, let that person know or bring it to the attention of the monitor. Also don t forget to contact the next days monitors to remind them of their duty. Again, thanks for doing a great job and for supporting our club. 3 The meeting was called to order by president Reagan Matsler at 8:08 am. A quorum was established. Directors present were Lynda Stuber, Jack Gardiner, Evelyn Hamlin, Ted Farmer, Rick Smith and Cliff Huges. The pledge of allegiance was led by Stan. Reagan announced that the minutes of the last meeting were posted on the bulletin board. Treasurer Report: Total Income $1, Total Expenses $2, Net November Income ($507.80) Total Bank Balance $23, Reagan informed the membership of the new credit card reader that Linda bought. The previous machine had a 15% lease fee for credit card use and the new machine has only a 2.75% charge. The new reader is also portable which will enable the club to use it at other functions such as the Farmers Market and other festivals. Barry noted that we may want to check out the wi-fi ability at the Sun Dial Red Center. A member mentioned that the Sun Dial had upgraded the wi-fi. Rich Ward said he had 180 hours to fill in 4 hour sessions. He also noted that in the future, all members will be required to monitor. it is time for all members of the club to step up. If you have any questions, see me. He also thanked those who have signed up. Rick, chairman for the Craft Fair, has information for the host/hostess members working at the Fair. Rick also informed all that the RCSC does not want workers parking at the Sun Dial. The parking should be for Fair goers. There will be a bus to transport people back and forth between the Sun Dial and the Bell Rec center. He believes the bus will pick up on the quarter hour at the parking lot and the Bell Center. All those helping with set up should meet at the Sun Dial on Wednesday at 8:30 am and again for take down after the Fair. We will also need people to take things back to the shop. Linda reported that 70 people have signed up for the Christmas Party and hoping more members sign up today. The party is on December 10th at the Bell Social Hall No. 1 and will be a BBQ luncheon. December brings election time around again. A nominating committee has been working to entice members to step up and take on one of the open slots on the ballot. We really need members to step up as we need a full slate of officers to keep the club open. Bill Hill is in charge of the committee. Bell Woodworking Club Minutes Membership Meeting November 22, 2016 The slate consists of : president, vice president, treasurer, secretary and two members at large. At this time we know we definitely need a president and treasurer. Linda has been exceptional at keeping up the books and she willing to train the new person. Ted mentioned that flogging of members will stop when members step up to monitor. He also talked about mandatory monitoring. The club has over 400 members and we need more members to serve as monitors! In addition to the officers, we added 2 Members At Large to the slate. The club is not legal without a treasurer. Also, RCSC owns everything and if we have to shut down RCSC will take everything and distribute to other clubs. Ted has served 2 years as president and currently serving as past president where Reagan has been on the board for 5 years. Roger Clause has wood shop shirts for sale. President Reagan Matsler - Open Forum A member asked of the 300 members, how many are here on a regular basis. Reagan said very few and noted that we must have two monitors on duty or the door is locked. A member stated that some may not be able to monitor. Tom asked that if anything is broken, PLEASE REPORT IT and to a monitor. Reagan reminded all to be more careful with the equipment. Rich noted that members are still not cleaning up after themselves. The rule regarding the table saw is that the blade must be retracted when finished and the guide placed over the top of the blade slot. Barry noted the new switch on table saw no. 1. Reagan reminded the group of the rule about leaving projects or wood on or under tables. With monitor on duty s permission, projects and wood could be left over night as long as the member will be in to work on them the following day. Areas under tables should not be used to store tools, wood or projects if they are not worked on daily. The members thanked Mike Will and his wife for putting together the Welcome Back Member BBQ potluck held at the tennis and mini golf course. Everyone noted that the did such a great job and even offered to let them do it again next year. 4 Bell Woodworking Club Minutes Board of Directors Meeting November 15, 2016 The meeting was called to order by president Reagan Matsler at 9:02 am. Members present were President Reagan Matsler, Vice President Jack Gardiner, Treasurer Lynda Stuber, Evelyn Hamlin Secretary, Past President Ted Farmer and Head Monitor, Rich Ward. The minutes are posted and published in the new newsletter and ed to members. Treasurer s Report: Treasure Stuber reported the total income was $1,703.50, savings of $15,014.23, checking of $8,075.86, total expenses of $2, The net October income was $ for a total of $23, Monitor Report: Head monitor, Rich Ward brought up the fact that the club still does not have enough monitors. There was a lengthy discussion on what to do: offer lower dues, offer cabinet, etc. to entice members, have specific number of times members must monitor to be a member in good standing. We will have to take into consideration dates for snow birds and year rounders. Lynda asked if suggestions have to go before the membership for a vote. And the answer was no and will be discussed at upcoming membership meetings. Fall Craft Fair: Rick noted a problem with the ATM. Probably no ATM available at the fair. He suggested we find a way to use our credit card machine. Members are needed to help set up and anyone selling must help with setup and tear down. Lynda has acquired a Square board reader that works on a tablet, be able to enter amount then slide card for payment and be a 2.75% transaction cost. There are 15 months left on the current credit card processor. Buy out for those months would cost $593. Ted moved that we immediately move to square account and purchase tablet reader. Ted moved we pay off credit card, drop Wells Fargo merchant services and move our business to a new bank. Motion carried. Ted will search for an alternative bank. Club luncheon: The luncheon is set for 56 members for the event. Twelve tables and 60 chairs will be set up, and the grill is ready. Soda and coffee is free. The shop will close at 11:00 am for setup. Ted suggested name tags be available for spouses Officer and Board elections: We are looking for new officers for the upcoming elections for President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. We will have Roger Brown place a notice for the need for new officers and for club members to step up or there is a possibility that the Bell Wood Club will no longer exist. Equipment and Maintenance There was a long discussion on the appearance of the club, extra wood, people unable to get close enough to tables to work on projects, projects left out for long periods of time. All in all, the Club needs a good cleaning up then needs to be kept up. There was discussion on the 12 inch green sander. Repairs will cost about $250 or can be replaced for $500. Ted moved that we spend no more than $180 to repair, motion passed. Cliff moved we buy a new sander with a $650 limit, Lynda seconded, motion passed. Cliff moved that the club buy a new 12 inch sander, Lynda seconded, motion passed. Noted for the CC router is where the big drum sander is. Roger Clause stated that he was given wrong info on the big drum. Ted moved to table discussion, Lynda seconded, motion passed. Club News: Roger would like to have more information on members submitted for Member of the Month. He would like to have reasons a member is chosen. The board needs to give Roger a write up on the member and why they wee chosen. Lynda would like for the club members who won ribbons at the state fair to be written up in the newsletter. She also noted that 50 members signed up for the Christmas Dinner and hoping more members sign up. Lynda moved to adjourn, seconded and the meeting adjourned at 10:42 am.
