1 MINUTES MESQUITE MUNICIPAL LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD August 5, :00 p.m. Mesquite Public Library 300 Grubb Drive PRESENT: ABSENT: Pat Stone Don Algood Tom Brown Sherrie Ray Beverly Hollingsworth Barbara Dunn Linda Ackerson Jeannie Johnson, Director of Library Services Pat Stone, Chair, called the meeting to order. July meeting minutes were distributed and read. Barbara Dunn made a motion that the minutes be approved. Linda Ackerson made a second to the motion and the minutes for the July meeting of the Mesquite Municipal Library Advisory Board were approved. Jeannie Johnson discussed upcoming special events to be held at the library. In August, the Friends of the Mesquite Public Library will sponsor the second annual Edible Book Contest. Participants will submit an edible representation of a book or literary character on August 20 at the Main Library. Patrons will then vote on August 21 for the best presentation, best creativity and best pun. Mesquite City Councilmember Bruce Archer and Arts Center Manager James Mack will judge entries for the Best of Show. Winners will be announced at the Friends meeting on August 21 at 7 p.m. Entries will then be auctioned off as the final phase of this Friends fundraiser. September will be Library Card Sign-Up Month and also, Customer Appreciation Month at the library so several special programs are planned as part of the celebration. The North Branch Library will have Creature Teacher as a special guest on September 13, 2:30 p.m. This program is always popular as it features mammals and birds for the

2 Page 2 audience to meet and learn about. Then, on September 20, at 2:00 p.m. the Main Library will have the Dallas Puppet Theater present String Variety, a marionette show. This will be the first time for our library to present this program and we are excited to offer this special treat to the community. Ask a Lawyer will return on September 27, 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Main Library. This community service program gives attendees the chance to seek legal advice for free. The Dallas Association of Young Lawyers and the Dallas Volunteer Attorney group will present this program for the library. In partnership with Christian Care, the library will present Medicare Update on September 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the Main Library. Attendees will learn about the latest changes taking place in Medicare and can ask questions about this important service. The proposed Library Department budget was presented to the Board by Library Director Jeannie Johnson. The total requested budget of $1,961, was divided into the following divisions: Administration, $725,933.00; North Branch, $580,510.00; and Main, $654, A breakdown by category included: Personnel, $1,541,118.00; Supplies, $183,035.00; and Contractual Services, $236, Ms. Johnson explained that the supply category includes books and audiovisual materials. Contractual expenses include postage, subscriptions, software licenses, membership dues, IT services, fuel costs, vehicle maintenance and repair, travel and training, printing, program expenses and utilities. Overall, the total budget represents a 0.6% decrease from last year. The budget for library materials includes: $131, for books, $25, for audiovisual materials and $79, for other (includes magazines, newspapers, book subscriptions, databases, ebooks, eaudiobooks, digital magazines, streaming movies, animated books and microfilm). The proposed book budget reflects a little over 5% increase over last year s book budget. The proposed budget requested 4 additional public access computers at the North Branch Library. The Branch currently has 6 computers available to the public. The additional computers would greatly reduce the wait times for this popular service. Mesquite Public Library System should have at least 55 public access computers available according to Texas Public Library Standards, but currently only have 44. The additional computers would bring the library closer to meeting that minimum standard.

3 Page 3 Staff Reports: July, In the month of July, 66 volunteers contributed 982 hours at the Main Library and North Branch Library had 17 volunteers who contributed 300 hours. --The Main Library sponsored 34 children s program this month with 1,465 in attendance. There were 27 children s programs presented by the North Branch in July with 915 in attendance. --There were 6,330 (including 1,435 extended sessions) computer sessions at the Main Library in the month of July and 1,689 (including 221 extended sessions) computer sessions at the North Branch Library. --Usage on the AWE Early Literacy Stations for the month of July was 1,609 sessions at Main and 755 sessions at North Branch. --In the Genealogy section, 18 researchers signed the register during the month of July. --The library s website averaged 457 visitor sessions per day during the month of July. --1,554 items were processed and added to the library s collection during July. --Mesquite library patrons checked out 134 eaudiobooks and 1 ebook from OneClickDigital during July. -- A total of 1,433 ebooks and 214 eaudiobooks from Overdrive were checked out during July by Mesquite patrons. There were 53 Mesquite library patrons who used Overdrive for the first time this month. There were 59 titles added to the Overdrive collection this month Mesquite library cards were added to Library Elf during July. --There were 4 TexShare cards issued in July. --There were 214 users of the JobView kiosk and online link during the month of July. --There were 156 users for the Main Library s study rooms in July for a total of 307 hours of use. --On July 2, the movie Frozen was shown at the Main Library as part of the Teen Summer Reading Club. There were 2 in attendance.

4 Page 4 --Get in the Game was held on July 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 at the North Branch Library with a total of 68 players. --Library Land was held at the North Branch Library on July 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 and at the Main Library on July 11, 18 and 25. There were 265 players in all. --Four sessions of Games and Gab were held at the North Branch Library on July 7, 14, 21 and 28 with a total of 103 participants. --Movie Time was presented on July 7, 14, 21 and 28 at the Main Library with 170 in attendance. North Branch Library held their Movie Time on July 1 and July 22 with 105 in attendance. -George the Magician entertained a crowd of 100 at the North Branch Library on July A Cup Stacking Lesson was held at the Main Library on July 9 as part of the Teen Summer Reading Club. There were 3 in attendance. --Science Time was held at the Main Library on July 11 with 35 participants. --Several craft programs were held during July as part of the Summer Reading Club activities. Craft programs were held on July 11, 18 and 25 at both facilities with a total of 302 participants. --On July 15, Whirled-on-a-String presented a Yo-Yo Show to an audience of 121 children and adults. --Spy Science Club was held at the North Branch Library on July 15 with 30 participants. --On Thursday, July 17, Susan Harding, Karen Hipp and Jeannie Johnson attended a training session for the new update of the MUNIS accounting system. --The movie Monsters University was shown in the meeting room of the Main Library on July 22 to 12 clients of the Adult Day Care. --As part of the Teen Summer Reading Club program, a session of Writing Club was held at the Main Library on July 23 with 5 teens in attendance. --Creature Teacher and his animal friends delighted the crowd of 210 at the Main Library on July 24. Among the featured animals during this visit was a chinchilla that had given birth to two babies that very day (to the surprise of even the Creature Teacher!). The audience oohed and aahed over meeting these two brand new additions to the show!

5 Page 5 --On Friday, July 25, Susan Harding attended a webinar entitled Using API to Improve Process Efficiency, Statistical Analysis and Customer Experience. --Sandra Wade, North Branch Library s new page, started her shelving career on July 28. Sandra, a retired school secretary at Dallas Christian School, lives in Rowlett. --Sandy Shrout Puppet Show was presented at the North Branch Library on July 29 with 97 in attendance. --The Teen Summer Reading Club presented a Mystery Theater and Meal at the Main Library on July 30 with 5 in attendance. --Jeannie Johnson attended a webinar on July 31 presented by the Texas State Library on Data Sources for Texas Public Libraries. --David Slick performed magic and juggling at the Main Library on July 31 to an audience of 146 children and adults. --New receipt printers were installed at the checkout desks on July 31. These printers will provide a receipt detailing what a patron has checked out in their current transaction (title, author and call number) and the date it is due. Staff will continue to attach date due stickers until the supply of stickers is depleted. This will allow patrons and staff to adjust to the new procedure gradually. --Tillie Perkins created a display at the North Branch Library called Happy Birthday America! in recognition of the Fourth of July holiday. Sherrie Ray made a motion that the meeting be adjourned. Beverly Hollingsworth made a second to the motion and the meeting adjourned.
