1 PROBUS News THE PROBUS CLUB OF HUNTSVILLE THURSDAY, JUNE 15, 2017 SUTHERLAND HALL, Meeting 10:00 am - Ticket Sales 9:30 am A huge shout out to Wendy Boyd who took on the challenge of teaching a Beginner s Bridge group. Wendy hosted each instruction in her home with the help of her very able assistant, her husband Bill. From all reports, all of the lessons and games were a great help to the members who attended. Well done Wendy!!! Pictured here are the 2017 graduating class of BRIDGE 101. From the left, Jim Elliot Diane Burley, Wendy & Bill, Cathy Nystrom, Nancy Halmos. 2 We have another exciting speaker for this month a recently retired V.P. of Transcanada Corporation our largest pipeline company and revered Canadian institution. He is coming all the way from Calgary and it would be terrific to have a full house. Invite guests they may even become active members! Here is a brief background of his recent book Dysfunction - which he will discuss and present ideas of going forward with environmental counterbalance. The debate continues with the recent B.C. election and Kinder Morgan s Trans Mountain Pipeline coming under fire: An investigation of the history and demise of the most controversial North American energy infrastructure project. In 2015, President Barack Obama denied approval for TransCanada s Keystone XL pipeline, which would have carried crude oil from the Canadian oil sands to the U.S. Gulf Coast, providing great economic benefit to Canada. Over seven years of regulatory process, environmental activism, and media attention, the project had become infamous, a cause célèbre for North America s ENGO movement and a test of Obama s bona fides in the face of global climate change risk. As one of TransCanada s senior executive group, Dennis McConaghy provides an insider s perspective of Keystone XL s history and demise. How did this routine infrastructure acquire iconic status? Why couldn t government and industry find some accommodation to salvage the project? And most importantly, what must Canada learn from Keystone XL s demise? Can the country find common ground between economic value and credible carbon policy? Dennis McConaghy is a Canadian energy executive with nearly forty years of industry experience in infrastructure development. He has engaged in the evolution of Canadian energy and climate policy over thirty years, from the National Energy Program of 1980 to the Paris Climate Conference of As one of the senior executives of TransCanada Pipelines, he was directly involved in conceiving and executing the Keystone XL pipeline project. 2

But if we look closely, we can probably find a greater variety of colours "popping out" at this time of year than we see in mid-october. So our challenge is to see how many different colours we can find in our Springtime surroundings! If you cannot appear in person, ed images to kkoehler@vianet.ca are always welcome. COME FROM AWAY It is true Canadian humour at it s best. It s the story of what happened in Newfoundland when hundreds of planes were diverted during 9/11. The dates and prices are not yet available, but Sue would like to have an idea of how many of our Probus members would be SERIOUSLY interested. She will have a sign up sheet at the June meeting to see if there is enough interest to warrant going forward. The production will be at a Mirvish theatre sometime after April 1, We estimate that the tickets will be from $80 to $110. with the cost of the bus extra. Once the tickets go on sale, Mirvish will contact Sue to see how many she will require. As soon as she has the final information she will need FULL COMMITMENT AND PAYMENT WITH NO REFUNDS.
