Because of a mix-up on the hotel s part, there was no room set aside for the Wednesday meeting and there was no food prepared for the meal. President Bob worked out a solution with the hotel. The meeting was held in the rear of the River Rock Bar and Grill. Club members dined on pizzas paid for by the Airlane. 1 P a g e

2 The Sergeant-at-Arms for the evening was Dave McColl. Visiting guests were two new proposed members, being sponsored by President Bob. They are Kim Cuthbertson and Ann Marie Smith-Caruk. Both women are employed at the Thunder Bay District Health Unit. Kim is a registered nurse and Ann Marie is a dental health educator. Another guest was Carmen Haw, a Lakehead University student. Carmen is from Kenora and was sponsored by the Kenora Rotary Club as an exchange student to Slovakia in Carmen will not be joining our club but will provide help on all our fundraisers. 3 The speaker for the evening was Charmaine Cimini of the Thunder Bay Police. She was introduced by Solade. Charmaine joined the Thunder Bay Police in August She worked as a Records Clerk for the first seven years. In 1996, she became the Classification clerk. She held that position until 2013 when she became the Criminal Records supervisor. The Thunder Bay Police prepare about 6000 criminal record checks per year. The checks are required for a variety of reasons-for employment, volunteering, immigration, adoption, and by students. To apply for a criminal record check, a person must provide a letter from the agency stating what type of criminal check is required. Two pieces of valid identification are also required. There are three types of criminal record checks-a Police Criminal Records check, a Police Information check, and a Police Vulnerable Sector check. A vulnerable person is defined as someone who is in a position of dependence on others. The dependence can be temporary or permanent. Examples of vulnerable persons are children, the elderly, disabled, or immigrants. The first type of check looks at convictions only. The second type of check looks at warrants and charges. The Vulnerable Sector check is a very invasive search. It looks at the same information as the second check but also looks at sex offense convictions as well as pardons for sex offenses. The query is done based on age and gender, in the pardoned sex offender database. If a hit is received, then the person requesting the check will have to get their fingerprints taken in order to exclude them. 3 P a g e

4 There is a difference between the background checks conducted by the Thunder Bay Police and a background check conducted by a third party. The third party can only access information from the RCMP database that is available at the time of the check. The information on this database is 2 to 3 years old. The Thunder Bay Police can check the databases of other police agencies by getting the addresses for the past five years of the person requesting the check. If the person has lived in other jurisdictions in Canada, the police can access those jurisdictions. A Vulnerable Sector check can only be carried out in the area in which a person lives. In Thunder Bay, if a person lives outside of the city limits, they have to go to the OPP for the check A clean police record is not a guarantee of safety for a club. The police only release criminal convictions. If charges have been withdrawn, they will not show on a Vulnerable Person check unless there are two non-convictions. The Police Record Search office hours are Monday to Thursday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The office is located at 1200 Balmoral Street. The office is closed on Fridays as that is the day that fingerprints are taken. The last application of the day is 2:45 p.m. as it takes 15 minutes to fill out the paperwork. It is best to go early in the day as it can be very busy. Monday tends to be very busy. For further information on police checks, please go to: President Bob fined everyone who had not received their flu shot. Twenty-three dollars was collected in fines. They will be held and put in the pot for the meeting on October 26. President Bob mentioned that he had received a club banner from Ed Kaminski from the District 6290 Montague-Whitehall Rotary Club. Ed was club president there in and is currently on their Board of Directors. Robert Moore reminded everyone about the Metro Food Drive for Shelter House that will take place on Saturday, October 15, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Solade had everyone laughing with the Lighter Side. 4 P a g e

5 Announcements The October 19 meeting will be canceled in order that club members can attend the 25 th Anniversary Foundation Dinner being hosted by the Nipigon Rotary Club. The dinner is being held at the Nipigon Legion (102 Fifth Street.) Tickets are $25.00 each. The symposium begins at 4:30 p.m. There will be a cash bar, smorgasbord, and auction. The guest speaker will be DG Herb Schmidt. President Dan Brown needs to submit numbers for the dinner by October 17. The Board meeting that was supposed to be held on Tuesday, October 18 has been moved to Tuesday, October 25. The induction of the two new members will take place at the October 26 meeting.
