I m excited to move into the Commodore position and to work with Brian and Mike, as well as the rest of our wonderful, supportive board members. At the same time, I m a bit uneasy. Members can expect another great year of monthly gatherings, presentations and cruises. We also plan to have Coast Guard inspections and fire extinguisher checks prior to the boating season. This year we also hope to try something new, which I believe may be in demand: Power Squadron Classes. Teachers from San Juan Island have volunteered to come over for a long weekend sometime in late March or early April. Stay tuned for class times, fees and content. By now you have received a first draft of this year s schedule. Please note the multitude of TBDs in slots for hosts and presenters, and seriously consider volunteering as a presenter or host. We need everyone involved to keep this an exciting organization. And, I know it s a long way off, but if you have any suggestions for our Opening Day Weekend theme, please send them our way. Any input at all, please feel free to me at paulh@centurytel.net. Cruise suggestions can be sent to Mike North at manorth1250@outlook com and, if you d like to host a meeting or have a presentation to share, contact Brian Krantz at brian@ipysales.com. As to the uneasiness, so many competent Commodores have preceded me and shared their great perspectives and words of wisdom that I wonder what I can contribute to these monthly newsletters. It has a wealth of information and, among other things, one can find current gas and diesel prices throughout Puget Sound and the Salish Sea. Cap Sante Marina appears to always have the best prices up north and the Des Moines Marina seems to have the lowest prices anywhere in Washington. SEATTLE BOAT SHOW: NEW SEMINARS AND PLENTY OF BOATS The Seattle Boat Show, January 27 February 4, 2017, seems once again raise the bar as the largest of its kind on the West Coast featuring over 1000

6 SEATTLE BOAT SHOW: NEW SEMINARS AND PLENTY OF BOATS The Seattle Boat Show, January 27 February 4, 2017, seems once again raise the bar as the largest of its kind on the West Coast featuring over 1000 recreational watercraft and three acres of accessories. And leading the list of features are new seminars with 36 fresh topics and 17 new presenters. The technology section is particularly robust ranging from Ten Tips for Using AIS on your Boat to iphones, ipads, and Boats. There are safety seminars covering such topics as man overboard procedures and cruising considerations for children (and grandchildren). All of these new seminars are free to Seattle Boat Show attendees. There are also Boat Show University s three-hour and all day training sessions presented by local icons like Mark Bunzel, editor of the Waggoner Guide and Jeff Renner, former KING 5 meteorologist. The three hour programs are $39 and the day-long training sessions, like Diesel and Electrical Troubleshooting, are $100. The show takes place indoors at CenturyLink Field Event Center and afloat on South Lake Union. There is a free shuttle service between the two locations to make things easier for attendees. George and Stepper Leboutillier generously donated some cruising guides with the idea that LIYC may want to start building a club library. A good idea, but after careful consideration, the board felt that might be difficult given that we have no owned property or building and that the books might be more useful serving a larger population. We approached Lou Pray, our Lopez Library Director, who happily accepted the donation. She will catalog the books and make them part of the library s permanent collection so that LIYC members and others in the community will know right where to find them.
