1 April 2015 Volume 4 San Diego County Cymbidium Society Cymbidiums, Paphiopedilums, and Other Outdoor Growing Orchids Executive Board Guest Speaker for the April 15, 2015 Meeting will be Nico Goossens - of Lico Orchids, talking about Tolumnias Orchids President: Walt Meier First Vice-President: Lena Shiroma Second Vice- President: Devon McFerran Treasurer: Marjorie Kuhlmann Membership Secretary: Sandi Sandquist Recording Secretary: Patti Barna Directors: 1 st Year Ivan Allen Debra Funakoshi Phyllis Prestia 2 nd Year Alex Nadzan Dennis Wharton Bill Wong, Past President Committee Chairs Refreshments: Open Publicity: Open Newsletter Editor: Ivan Allen CSA Representative: Lena Shiroma Executive Board Meetings: January 10, April 11, August 8, November 14. 9:00 AM Walt Meier s home We welcome back local orchid grower, Nico Goossens of Lico Orchids for this month s talk. Nico will tell us about the fascinating and perhaps little known world of Tolumnias. They are small succulent orchids with colorful dainty flowers that can grow outside here in Southern California. They were previously grouped in Oncidiums and you will see that the flowers look a little like the dancing ladies that we know from the Onicidium group. As part of the presentation, Nico will be demonstrating how he mounts Tolumnias. Nico has dabbled in orchids since 1978, and has extensive experience in growing orchids outdoors as well as in green houses. He has traveled widely in Southeast Asia and South America to see orchids growing there in their native habitat, and he is especially interested in conserving our local native orchids. Nico co-owns Lico Orchids with his partner, Lisa Humphreys. They founded the company in 1995, and they specialize in species orchids that they sell wholesale and retail at flower shows. Lico Orchids grows their orchids in a greenhouse as well as open shade structures in Encinitas, California.
