The schools absorb half of the county budget and are an important determinant of property values. All this is beyond the primary mission of the schools which is to provide a quality education to the next generation. The schools in Mason serve an extremely diverse population of young people with widely divergent educational needs and goals. You should plan on attending our next meeting Wednesday, February 18th, and visit with the Mason representative to the Fairfax County School Board, Kaye Kory. She will update us on the current renovations at Stuart and Annandale High Schools as well as the proposed replacement of Glasgow Middle School. Kaye will be on hand to answer other questions regarding our schools. She has offered to bring other experts to answer specific questions you may have regarding school policies. The quality of life in Fairfax County and specifically, can be no better than the quality, both actual and perceived, of our public schools. Come out and become informed. The Television Show The February edition of Mason Matters! features the legislative agenda of the General Assembly and Governor Mark Warner s two-year state budget proposal and his Commonwealth of Opportunity budget and taxreform plan. Delegate Bob Hull provides insight to the elements being considered by the House of Delegates and its approach to achieving consensus on the proposed budget. Mason Matters! airs at on Thursdays, and at 6:30 p.m. on Fridays and Sundays on Fairfax County Government Channel 16. Dues Due Please send in your dues for the coming year. 4 Page 4 Council of Civic Associations FY2005 Budget: The County Executive will present his FY2005 budget recommendations to the Board of Supervisors on Monday, February 23, Budget Public Hearings begin the evening of March 29 and continue March 30 and March 31, The Board of Supervisors will mark up the budget on April 19, You may watch the proceedings live on cable Channel 16. The Town Meeting on the budget is scheduled for Tuesday, March 16 at 7:30pm at Weyanoke Elementary School, 6520 Braddock Road. Call 703/ Chesapeake Bay Preservation Ordinance and its impact of new construction: In order to comply with the state's new directives, Fairfax County recently approved amendments to the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Ordinance. The centerpiece of the revised regulations is that Resource Protection Areas (RPAs) must now be designated around all water bodies with Perennial flow. Mapping that designates new RPA boundaries was also adopted with the ordinance amendments. Generally, RPAs are areas in which development may not encroach. However, the ordinance protects existing structures and uses in the RPA and there are some provisions to address waivers or exceptions. A video program about the amendments is available for loan at all Fairfax County public libraries. The Council is YOUR FORUM for making your concerns known to Fairfax County officials. Each association has one vote in the council. The association s delegate or its President can cast this vote. Box 8989 Falls Church VA The Council of Civic Associations is an umbrella organization for civic associations located in the Supervisory District of Fairfax County. The purpose of this council is to facilitate the efforts of its member-associations by promoting the community s general welfare through non-partisan, non-sectarian civic activities. The Philadelphia Flower Show Tuesday, March 9, am-6 pm Wednesday, March 10, :30 am-10 pm It's the 175th anniversary of the Philadelphia Flower Show, the largest indoor flower show in the world. This year's theme is Destination Paradise. If you have never been to the flower show, this is the year to go. Enjoy award winning displays, hear a lecture, watch a demonstration, and shop the marketplace. For those wishing to take advantage of the free lectures and demonstrations Tuesday is the day for you. Bring a lunch or enjoy the atmosphere of the Redding Terminal located across the street. If you would like to really see the displays without the crowds then travel on Wednesday as the exhibit hall is decidedly less crowded in the late afternoon. No matter the day, wear comfortable walking shoes. Nonrefundable advanced reservations are required. Fee: $75
