2 2 Note from the President s Desk I would like to take a moment to remind everyone that it is time to renew your DOS membership. Thank You to the amazing members that have stepped up and formed our away team and grower s corner. Suzy Stepnowski DOS President/newsletter editor A huge thanks to Millie and Denny Cutler, Scott Cunningham. Dave Emerson, Dave Stephens and Pat Smith for their hard labor in transporting heavy boxes of books and two large cabinets- 6 H 3 W and 18 D up from my basement out to Denny s truck and several other vehicles. After all of that hard work, they then got into their cars to drive the library down to Mary Lou s in Bear. And, they accomplished all of this in about 45 minutes. Their efforts will enable the library to be up and running again so that we may have access to the books, periodicals and video materials. Thanks again to all of them! 3 October 2018 Volume 18 Issue 2 Delaware Orchid Society October Speaker John Lonsdale 3 John Lonsdale is the owner of Edgewood Gardens, a rare plant nursery and garden in Exton, PA. Born in England, John has grown a wide variety of alpine and woodland plants and bulbs for more than 30 years, and is a recipient of the Alpine Garden Society Gold Merit Medal. He has traveled extensively to study plants in habitat, especially Trillium in the SE USA. John regularly contributes articles to the publications of a number of horticultural societies, lectures widely and maintains a website ( featuring over 10,000 images of plants growing in his Exton, PA garden. He contributed a chapter discussing Cyclamen in North America to the book, Genus Cyclamen in Science, Cultivation, Art and Culture, published by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. John received his Ph.D. from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in John WILL BE BRINGING PLANTS TO SELL! 3

9 9 Special Orchid Yard Sale By Dave Off Friday and Saturday 10/19 & 10/20 Announcing a BIG fall sale. In an effort to reduce the size of my personal collection I will be having an orchid yard sale. There will be 500+ plants available at very reasonable prices. Most of the plants will be Cattleya genera. Come see a great selection of seedlings, select divisions, species, hybrids and specimen plants. This is an in-person sale only. No list is published and no plants will be shipped.
