The more plants that are brought in for examination, the more interesting this will be. Please bring plants that the panel can un-pot so that the roots can be examined if necessary. This ought to be a lively evening. The panel members will be Ann Stuart, Ed Nazzal, Matt Bond, Barry Zimmerman and Tanya Lam. Barry Zimmerman Ann Stuart Tanya Lam 1

Holiday Party Kristina Bell (408) Question Corner Question of the month submitted by Sandi Fox: Hi Dave, I would like to ask you a question about fertilizers. I understand that you can not premix most of the orchid fertilizers on the market because if they sit too long they become plant killers? I use the Grow More brand. Answer from Ed Nazzal: Your Grow More brand fertilizers will not degrade by adding water to them. The fertilizers become ionic and do not degrade.!"#$%&'()%$*: you should be using the one (Green-urea free) that does not have urea as a source of nitrogen. Orchids do not respond well to urea. Also, Grow More fertilizers do not have many micro-nutrients so you will need a source of Boron, Chlorine, Cobalt, Magnesium and Calcium. I have read that these are important and are included in many professional fertilizers such as Dyna-Grow. Showgrounds, 3400 Calle Read, Santa Barbara, CA. 6 embarking, aside from the articles on the different, specific orchid genera. Tuberolabium kotoense submitted OliverColemar I would like to start off this year by reporting about the (44 th?, 55 th?, 59 th?) annual Paphiopedilum Guild, held yearly at The Inn at Morro Bay during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend. This was a day-and-a-half affair of presentations by different Slipper orchid experts. Many of the attendees were from California, but there were also enthusiasts from Illinois, Minnesota, New York, Florida aattendees who have achieved celebrity status in the orchid world included: Norito Hasegawa, Harold Koopowitz and Glenn Decker (Piping Rock Orchids and Phrag. kovachii fame). The first speaker that Saturday, January 15 was Lance Birk, author of the Paphiopedilum Grower s Manual. His presentation was entitled The Road to Rantepao. He showed slides of his trip to a very remote part of Sulawesi; and recounted how he encountered Paphiopedilum celebense, describing the locations, giving an idea of how they could be successfully grown outside its natural environment Rossioglossum Grande Rawdon Jester Grown be Dave Smitt +,-.!/01(2+/)!/(. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU! I know, I know. It s already February. The trip to the Philippines in December threw off my schedule. Just didn t have time to write my January 2011 SCVOS newsletter installment. Well, I m back to the normal swing of things, I think. This year, I will be reporting on all the orchid-related trips Peter and I are 6
Norito Hasegawa, Harold Koopowitz and Glenn Decker. Sam Tsui of Orchid Inn, Ltd in Illinois was the next speaker. His presentation was about Paphiopedilum leochilum. He described the difference between godofroyae and leochilum. He talked about the trends in hybridizing using leochilum as a parent in three countrin namely: Thailand, Japan and the USA. He also discussed the different cultural practices in these countries and the species light and water requirements given the different potting media used. SCVOS former VP, Tim Culbertson, presented the slides on the 2010 awards given by the AOS and the Cymbidium Society of America for Paphiopedilums and Phragmipediums. As usual, Tim did a fantastic job! Lance Birk, Sam Tsui and Tim Culbertson. After the session that Saturday afternoon, the attendees had the opportunity to expand their collection purchasing the offerings by Sam Tsui (Orchid Inn, Ltd), Jason Fischer (Orchid Web) and Norito Hasegawa. Sam had rare Paph species, as well as rare alba forms of some of the species. Jason Fischer, of course, brought 7
Phrags, including kovachii seedlings. Norito was selling species and miniature hybrids. Unlike the previous years where the vendors sold their stuff in their rooms at The Inn, this year, The Inn had a sales area. I hope there will be more vendors next year. Sunday morning, January 16, Jason Fischer gave a talk on breeding Phrags, new hybridizing trends and new species. Pretty amazing stuff! He also gave some tips on how to keep them alive. That gave me much information on how to keep mine healthy and vigorous. I am following his lead and keeping my fingers crossed. He was followed by Dr. Eric Christenson, for whom Christensonia vietnamica was named. His topic was Conservation, real and imagined. He basically discussed the merits and demerits of orchid conservation groups. He reiterated the importance of transparency when it comes to finances and updating the information on the websites. His pitch was not so much about eco-tourism as a means to orchid conservation, but supporting graduate students in these countries who are dedicated to the conservation objective and are willing to do the leg work to achieve this. He cited an instance when he and another expat scientist paid for two graduate students to go to Macchu Picchu for orchid research. On their own, these two graduate students would not have been able to because of the prohibitive cost of traveling to Macchu Picchu for locals. Jason Fischer, Dr. Eric Christenson, and Patty James (organizer). Every year, Peter and I look forward to this weekend. All in all, it has always been a very rewarding exercise. Meet friends and big names in the orchid industry, learn new things and acquire a few new plants for the collection. We highly recommend this to SCVOS members to broaden horizons, if not just to take a weekend get-away in beautiful Morro Bay. 8
View from the The Inn at Morro Bay Next month, I will be writing about Dendrochilum. Do you have any particular genus request? Feel free to tell me or Peter. As for the trips, there is the Smithsonian visit in February with Thomas Mirenda and the World Orchid Congress in Singapore come November this year. Some of the exhibits 9
