Send submissions to: equinejohn@aol.com by the 10th of the month. President s Message Bob McGraw I am so glad that the cold weather is over. My orchids, which seem to struggle to survive in the winter, have started to grow again. It is time to think about repotting now that my plants are putting on new shoots and roots. I look for plants that have started to grow outside their pot or plants that are not looking well. Often plants that don t look Next Meeting: Monday, April 25th at 7:00pm Kanapaha Botanical Gardens The Gainesville Orchid Society meetings are held on the fourth Monday of every month starting at 7:00 pm (Beginner s class) in the Summer House at Kanapaha Botanical Gardens, 4700 SW 58th Drive. For additional information contact any of the GOS officers. well just need repotting to get them growing again. When I am repotting orchids I always look carefully for pests like scale and mealybug. If I find pests, I clean the plant well and spray it with an oil spray. If you find pests on one plant you probably have pests on many plants. So, if I find pests on one plant I spray my entire greenhouse with a systemic Beginner s Class: Trey Yon will give a presentation on: Your Orchid Library and How to Use it. Speakers: April 2016 pesticide. It takes two applications about 10 days to two weeks apart. Christine and I enjoyed hosting the 14 th annual Chaz and Marth Darling Pot-In. 2 P A G E 2 President s Message Bob McGraw (Continued from page 1) have too many and are running out of room. There were about 50 orchids priced from FREE to $8. Needless to say they went fast. I am not sure it helped because since the sale we have bought more orchids at the annual GOS auction, the Mid- Lake Orchid Society auction, and the Jacksonville Orchid Show. Maybe we will need another sale next year. GOS was well represented at the Jacksonville Orchid Show. Two GOS members, Carolyn Robinson and Mike Sielaff won Best in Show awards, the GOS display got 2 nd place, and lots of ribbons were won. Thanks to Marion Sheehan and Candy Hollinger for coordinating this show and to everyone that participated. There are photos of the GOS display and a list of ribbons awarded in this Newsletter. Christine and I will miss the April GOS meeting. I am sure it will be a great meeting. See you in May. Vanilla Planifolia

4 P A G E 4 Jacksonville Show Results: We got 2nd place for our GOS display in the Jacksonville show, Mike Sielaff got a Best of Show for his large Cymbidium (Mad Irishman) and Carolyn Robinson got a Best of Show for her Den. Laevifolium Carolyn s Joy HCC/AOS. 10 P A G E 1 0 Affiliated societies can now earn a one-month extension of their AOS society membership for each new AOS member that they refer (membership renewals don t count). For now, the only way to take advantage of this program is to download and print the AOS Membership Application Form, check the box yes to indicate that you are a member of a local orchid society, most importantly fill in the NAME of your orchid society, and mail the completed application and payment to AOS, Old Cutler Road, Coral Gables, Florida With twelve new AOS members, your affiliated society can have a FULL YEAR OF FREE AOS membership! Be sure to have membership applications with your society s name already filled in and available at your club meetings! 15 P A G E 1 5 Bloom Table: Bloom Table Changes At the GOS Board Meeting on 24 March 2016, two changes were made to the Monthly Bloom Table. A new category was added for entering plants and the rules for the Good Grower Award were modified. The new category will be 'New Member Orchids'. The idea is to entice new members to start bringing in their orchids for show. Any type of orchid can fit into this category and the 'best' orchid, as determined by the judges, will get the blue ribbon. New members will be competing among themselves and not against members that have been growing orchids for many years. If you have only been in the society for one or two years or have never brought in one of your orchids for show, you are a new member. New members can place their plants in any appropriate category. The New Member category is only an additional option open to them. The Good Grower Award is given to the member who gets the most blue ribbons at the Bloom Table each year. The rules for the Good Grower Award were modified to state that "A member who wins the award must drop out for one year before becoming eligible to compete again". Bob McGraw GOS President
