3 Cruising News Joan Marie Van Gasken Ahoy the cruise fleet! Thanks to everyone who hosted and attended our great cruises this year. Can t wait until next year! Labor Day at Long Branch The weather was wonderful and TTPYC practically had the Longbranch Marina to ourselves for Labor Day weekend. Twelve boats came and went over the weekend. We had 7 boats come Friday, four more on Saturday, and one more joined us on Sunday. Friday was an afternoon for parking boats, kayaking and general visiting, game playing and hanging out. Saturday was a morning of parking more boats, and then in the afternoon we had a Mexican Train Dominoes tournament and more kayaking. Then later Doug and Sharon Andrews from Mapril June drove over to join us for a potluck dinner with 23 people in attendance. We ate well and then at 8:00pm a dozen of us got in the van at the marina and went to the dance at the Longbranch Community Center while others stayed behind to watch a video or read. Sunday was more kayaking, bike riding, and going for walks until 4:00pm when we gathered to make Sail Mix (our version of trail mix ). Each boat contributed their favorite ingredient. We had all the usual suspects like nuts, dried fruits and chocolate chips, but we also had gummy octopus and fish, candy corn, and chocolate covered salted caramels. Everyone got a baggie of mix to take home and there was enough for a bowl to set out for the afternoon pot luck happy hour which basically morphed into another potluck after we finished sharing where we were during the summer of 1967 (The summer of Love in SF). Then there was the second half of the documentary video until bedtime. Boats in attendance were Stella Maris, Prime Meridian, Viva, Sloe Tango, Hobbes, Amazing Grace, Cheers, Equis, Allez, Knot Woozy, Tapawingo, and Yikes II. The Brames on Amazing Grace were the first ones out Monday morning and were rewarded with seeing a whale as they went past Commencement Bay on their way home.

5 Membership News Doug and Sharon Andrews, Chairs Samantha, The Sea Dog, Assisting Message from Doug and Sharon Andrews TTPYC MEMBERSHIP Three Tree Point Yacht Club is about to celebrate 50 years of having fun on the water here in South Puget Sound and beyond. Along with having fun, our club is always looking for ways to give back to our community. One very important way to give back is to actively stay involved in our home port, The Des Marina. Many of us have seen so many changes over the years in our marina, some good, some not so good. Our city has struggled at times with some of their decisions on how to manage our marina, sometimes not in OUR best interest. The good news is we do have a voice to help them in their decision making process. That voice is your DMMA (Des Moines Marina Association). What has the Des Moines Marina Association (DMMA) done for you? Early 2000 DMMA did the research and lobbying to allow all marina tenants that participated to receive $100 s and in many cases $1000 s of dollars back in lease holder taxes. DMMA is spending an untold amount of time and effort convincing the city to stop using a disproportionate amount of marina income, your moorage fees and fuel dollars, on general fund projects. Now much of this money is being set aside for the much needed repairs and improvements in the marina. DMMA has stayed on top of the planning for the paid parking getting designated tenant parking spaces and negotiating for parking permits for guest and sail boat crews etc. DMMA has been monitoring the cities budgetary presses to the point where we are now not paying for things that are truly parks and other department issues. The City of Des Moines is working on a plan to develop the Marina Floor / Parking Lot. Being discussed are additional restaurants, retail space or even a hotel. The DMMA board is watching this process very closely.
6 DMMA has asked to be part of the search and vetting of the new harbor master when the current harbor master retires. DMMA continues to donate to Destination Des Moines and the 4th of July Fireworks Celebration. DMMA holds monthly board meetings to stay on top of the issues and needs of the marina and us tenants. DMMA publishes the newsletter Dock Talk that comes to you in the envelope with your mooring invoice. DMMA organizes the biannual tenant general meetings to keep us informed on what is happening in the marina. These meetings include city officials, council members and marina staff. Our Fall General Meeting is October 11 th 2017, 7pm at the Activity Center on 216 th. This meeting is open to all who care to come! Membership is only $25 and due in October. (See the form attached to the Barnacle .) Des Moines Marina Association 2017 Calendar of Meetings & Events (Note: City Council Meetings scheduled 1st, 2nd And 4th Thursdays at 7pm. In addition, scheduled Committee Meetings precede City Council & begin around 5:30-6pm. Check website for changes. DMMA attends for Marina-related topic.) October 11 Fall DMMA General Meeting All members & tenants invited. Standard agenda; Mayor/Council November 8 Monthly Meeting Standard agenda & review Dock Talk newsletter. Review progress with City/Marina budget. Preview of proposed moorage rate change for 2017 December No DMMA Monthly Meeting? Marina Member News If you have news you want to share with members (think new grandchildren, addresses, boats, jobs, retirements, trips and/ or great photos of a trip, etc.) Just let us know. your announcement to Kristie & Don, the Barnacle editors, K6352@aol.com and Doug & Sharon membership chairs at doug@highlandmistltd.com.
7 MARKET PLACE This is a section for the benefit of our members. If you have something boat related to sell or trade, just send the info on to Kristie at K6352@aol.com and we will place it in this new section each month. Remember this is for members only! Website information I m not sure how many folks realize that member Nicholas Wood and Dan Downhour are our volunteer webmasters. Over the last few years, Nick has really upgraded the look of our site. He is working on other upgrades as well. However, it has been hard to get information to him, so.. if you need to contact him about the website or give him information to be posted, please him at webmaster@ttpyc.org. As always, send Barnacle information or pictures to Kristie at K6352@aol.com. EXTRAS! The Power Squadron shared this information with us. Right now Northwest Harvest donations are being 100% matched, so a $50 donation turns in to $100. This will continue thru the end of October, so it is a great time to donate.
