2 EDITORIAL By now you would have seen our cover photo. This ties in with the report, kindly submitted by Dave Gittins, of the Golden Globe race. The photo is of the South Australian entrant, Coconut, skippered by Mark Sinclair of the RSAYS. We owe a vote of thanks to our commodore for his in depth talk on knots and splices. This was delivered last Friday after our meal. The evening was well attended by approximately 25 members Reparation work continues on the wash down area with Jerry providing a lot of the levelling work using our own tractor. With 90 tons having already been delivered and laid it is evident that a lot more tonnage has to be brought in With the official ramp opening by the honourable Mark Butler to take place at the boat ramp on the 15 th of this month all members are urged to attend and support the plaque unveiling. Remember that no government grant equals no ramp extension I hope that all of our members attend our AGM on 29 th of July. Do make an effort and make your vote count. 5 Committee Elections: All Committee positions will be declared vacant. These positions are: Commodore Vice Commodore Secretary Treasurer Mooring Master On Water Activities Officer Social Activities Officer Maintenance and Development Officer Communications Officer 2 extra Committee Members Current holders of these positions are eligible for election without nomination. Any full member may nominate an eligible member for election to the Committee. Nominations must be proposed by a member and seconded by another member and signed by the nominee to signify a willingness to stand for election. Form attached. Nominations must be received by the Secretary prior to the commencement of the AGM. Nominations can only be accepted from the floor of the meeting if there are no written nominations or returning sitting member. To be eligible to hold a Committee position a person must be a full member and must not be precluded by the Associations Incorporation Act from holding such a position. The relevant portion of the Act is: 30. (1) A person who is an insolvent under administration must not, without leave of the Commission, be a member of the committee of an incorporated association, or be in any way (whether directly or indirectly) concerned in or take part in the management of an incorporated association. 30.(2) A person who has been convicted within or outside the State: (a) on an indictment of an offence in connection with the promotion, formation or management of a body corporate; or (b) of an offence involving fraud or dishonesty punishable on conviction by imprisonment for a period of not less than three months; or (c) of an indictable offence; or (d of (i)an offence against section 39A; or (ii)an offence against a provision applied by section 41B; or (iii)an offence against section 60, must not, within a period of five years after his or her conviction or, if he or she was sentenced to imprisonment, after his or her release from prison, without leave of the Commission, be a member of the committee of an incorporated association, or be in any way (whether directly or indirectly) concerned in or take part in the management of an incorporated association. 5

7 Maintenance Jerry hard at work distributing 90 tons of fill. There are some other maintenance tasks that need to be carried out. These are Installation of new watering system to entrance gardens. Carpentry work on fascia board rear of clubroom Windows to be cleaned inside and out. General weed spraying. This work to be carried out on an ongoing basis. 8 ON WATER ACTIVITIES GOLDEN GLOBE RACE 2018 In 1968, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston became the first to circumnavigate the world single-handed and non-stop. His yacht, Suhaili, has been preserved as a historic vessel. To mark the 50 th anniversary of his voyage, a race around the world started on 1 July 2018 from Les Sables d Ollone, in northern France. It will finish there in early 2019, using the same facilities as the Vendee Globe race. Sir Robin, in Suhaili, symbolically led the fleet of seventeen across the starting line under power, because of the very light conditions. A late starter from Italy was expected to join the race later. The special feature of this race is that competitors must sail yachts designed before 1988 and restrict themselves to equipment that was available to Sir Robin in Details are too numerous to list here, but they include navigation only by compass and sextant and only windvane self-steering. Yachts must have conventional long keels, with rudders attached to the after end of the keels. They must be between 32 and 36 long. Apart from some safety improvements, competitors will have the same experiences and equipment as Sir Robin. South Australia is represented by Mark Sinclair, of the RSAYS, in his Lello 34, Coconut. Mark is a former RAN commander and is highly experienced in singlehanded sailing. Another interesting competitor is Abhilash Tomy, an officer of the Indian Navy. He is sailing a fairly close replica of Suhaili. The yachts will carry tracking devices to enable their progress to be followed online. See 8

Ferdinand and Paul experienced a rush to the head and launched the spinnaker during the race and was subsequently disqualified Thanks to all who attended. Cheers John 9
