1 LAKE COUNTRY PROBUS PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE I m standing at my computer typing this while watching an almost full moon rise over the frozen lake. Current thought is that we sit far too much and it impacts our circulation and is not good for us. So I got rid of my desk and put my computer on a tall dresser and now I m standing to use it. As always, I m interested in doing as much as I can to keep myself fit and active. Having said that I realize that it is also my approach to being President of PROBUS. To this end I am concerned about the health of our PROBUS club and it s ability to continue to function satisfactorily in coming years. In a few short months we will not only need a vice president but also a president as my term will be over in October. We have also reinstituted the position of 2nd vice president and will need a volunteer for this position. Along this line we will also need to fill the positions of dining, speaker and newsletter chairs as our current volunteers have given in notice that come September they will be done. They have served long and well and will be missed. Apparently this situation (having trouble getting volunteers for the executive) is not unique to our PROBUS. Other clubs also have some difficulties in attracting volunteers. If there was only some way I could tell you how rewarding it is being a part of the executive. Things always seem to sort themselves out in the long run so while I may keep being a broken record I will have faith that things will work out. On another note PROBUS central has revised it s guidelines and now PROBUS is all capital letters and is no longer supposed to be only for retired business people. It s trying to be more inclusive. Next month is National PROBUS month and to acknowledge this we have been including information about PROBUS in our newsletter. We are also busy organizing coming events and activities. Your executive is busy making our PROBUS the best ever. They are an amazing group of dedicated people. So happy February, the days are getting longer and touch wood the weather has been better so far than last year. We are indeed fortunate to be living in Canada and to have PROBUS to attend to have fun and meet people. Looking forward to seeing everyone one week later than usual on Monday February 23rd. Take care, be well and warm, enjoy life and be kind to yourself and others. With overwhelming support from her business network, Lindsay partook in a volunteer mission to Nicaragua in January of She was part of a team of like-minded insurance professionals who collectively built two houses for two impoverished families. It was a life changing experience, and she learned some valuable lessons. The first PROBUS club in the world was formed in England in 1965 when a recent retiree named Fred Carhill started meeting for coffee with several other ex-commuters. There were many retired men in this area with similar business and professional backgrounds and Fred decided to form a luncheon club. The local Rotary president organized the first meeting and with forty-five men in attendance they established the Campus Club. At about the same time in September 1965, Harold Blanchard, a member of the Caterham Rotary Club also retired. At his urging the Caterham Rotary club organized a meeting for retired professional and businessmen aged 60 and over in February Forty two prospective members attended and agreed to a monthly luncheon meeting. They adopted the name of PROBUS, taking the first three letters of PROfessional and BUSiness. Harold is considered the father figure' of PROBUS in Great Britain. PROBUS has since spread throughout the world and at the present time there are over 4,000 clubs worldwide and the numbers are increasing steadily. Probus Clubs were introduced to New Zealand in 1974, Australia in 1976 and Canada in As of December 31, 2014 there were 235 active PROBUS Clubs in Canada with 32,087 members.
