With 20 years of planning, marketing and business development experience, Robinson will discuss the effective marketing strategies implemented to promote the new TriPoint Medical Center as well as the strategies employed in order to smooth the transition of the name change from Lake Hospital System to Lake Health. He will also discuss how these strategies can be applied to a increase name and brand recognition. Prior to joining Lake Health, Robinson was the Director of Strategic Planning & Marketing for Summa Health System in Akron, and Manager of Planning & Marketing for the Eastern Region of the Cleveland Clinic Health System. He is very active in the community and is the Chairman of the Board for the Cleveland Dialysis Center as well as a Board member for the Painesville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Diversity Center of Cleveland. Gary received his MBA from Kent State University and is currently completing a Doctorate in Management and Marketing at Cleveland State University. 2 From Your Board Our president, John Venen We now have a month under our belt for 2010, and there are signs in the economy that indicate that things may finally be moving in the right direction. Here s to hoping this trend continues. Directory photos will be taken before and after the February meeting. Times for photos are 11:00-11:45 am and 1:15-2:00 pm. Brad Kleinman leads a two-hour workshop on e-marketing followed by a luncheon keynoted by Connie Dieken. According to the Associated Press, The economic slump has prices for Super Bowl commercial time falling for only the second time in its history, but it is still the most expensive on television. TNS Media Intelligence said Monday that 30-second commercials during next month s Super Bowl on CBS are selling for between $2.5 million and $2.8 million. That s a drop from last year, when ads averaged $3 million on NBC - a record, according to TNS. Some big players like Pepsi and General Motors are staying on the sidelines. This leaves holes for smaller companies like Diamond Foods and Dr Pepper Snapple to use the Super Bowl to get their wares in front of 100 million viewers who are practically guaranteed to watch their ads. We should approach our advertising in the same light, not by spending 2.5 million for an ad during the Super Bowl, but through looking for opportunities that require out of the box thinking to get our products or services out in front of people. 3 Nominate a Charity for Lake Communicators 2010 Outreach Effort Last year, Lake Communicators decided it was time for us to give back to our community. At each monthly meeting, a food collection was gathered to help support local food pantries though United Way s Harvest for Hunger program. To thank our members for their participation, anyone who donated a food items was put into a drawing to receive a free lunch for their next Lake Communicators meeting. In addition to our monthly collection, we achieved our challenge to fill a Christmas stocking at our December Holiday Party with the 147 rolls of toilet paper that were donated. Monetary donations were also received throughout the year, too. Thank you to everyone who participated! For 2010, Lake Communicators is looking to its membership to nominate a favorite local charity to support. At February s meeting you will find Charity Nomination Forms on tables and around the bar area. If you have a charity to suggest, please take the time to fill out a form next month. Lake Metroparks Ranger Lieutenant Honored The North Carolina Department of Justice and the North Carolina Justice Academy have awarded Lake Metroparks Ranger Lieutenant James Jim Smallwood the prestigious and rare Certificate of Graduation for completing the Professional Ranger Program. Lt. Smallwood is only the 20th recipient of the award in the 32-year history of this certification program, designed to recognize career development efforts in the field of parks. Lt. Smallwood began working toward this achievement 15 years ago. His award demonstrates both his personal commitment as well as Lake Metroparks commitment to ongoing professional training and growth. The program consists of a variety of courses, including general law enforcement, legal issues, environmental and interpretive education, natural resource law and protection, crime prevention as well as a selection of specialized instructor and safety courses. Work experience and additional, ongoing education are also factored into the certification award. Jim Smallwood has worked in the Lake Metroparks Ranger Department for over 20 years, and has served as Lieutenant Ranger since June He currently oversees the patrol function of the Ranger Department. 4
