Ted is a NASA Solar System Ambassador and a co-founder of the Fountain Hills Astronomy Club, a group which provides telescopes and astro-guides for the monthly Library public sky watch. As a passionate sidewalk astronomer he can often be found outside Bashas Market here in Fountain Hills sharing the views through his telescope with the public. His amateur research interests include measuring the sizes and shapes of distant asteroids. (Canceled) District Governor To Visit FH Rotary Clubs This Week District Governor Nancy Van Pelt will not be visiting both Fountain Hills Rotary Clubs on the evening of Thursday, November 16. After discussions with the Four Peaks club, it was decided that the DG visit with both clubs will be canceled and rescheduled with the individual clubs. 2 Page 2 Holly Shares Her Rotary Service In Nigeria The last time we saw our wonderful visiting Rotarian, Holly Callen, she was raising funds for a fantastic service project in Nigeria. This project was part Polio Plus, and included purchasing mosquito nets and hand operated wheelchairs for current polio survivors in the region. Our club and many of our club members donated to the cause. Holly recently returned and shared her experiences: Nigeria was incredible...from vaccinating children (as young as one day old) in clinics, schools, churches and homes to giving bed nets to grateful pregnant and nursing mothers and 800 disabled children to hearing the children in the IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) Camps singing in welcome to distributing hand-cranked wheelchairs to polio survivors to making new Rotary friends in Abuja, Kaduna and Yola to singing a hymn in Ausa on Sunday to attending an intensive briefing by Chair Dr. Tunji Funsho at the National Polio Office to having a Star beer with the team at the end of a long, rewarding day to celebrating at a farewell dinner with Rotarians in Nigeria, Kenya, Canada, Denmark and the U.S. at PRIP Jonathan Majiyagbe s home. Every minute brought something new and exciting. The weather was hot (100 degrees in Yola) and the sun was punishing, but the children were beautiful and the mothers were grateful that their children will never suffer from polio. We must continue until NO CHILD is in danger from this horrible disease. Let s end POLIO NOW as we progress on the Countdown to History!

3 Page 3 A Message From Your Club President This past week, I had the pleasure and opportunity of being a judge for Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale, an event that began in October and concludes on April 20th, Each year, the nine branches of Boys and Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale put forth one to three candidates for this event and a panel of judges selects the best from each branch, leaving the nine finalists for the April "Blue Door Event" where the final winner is announced. Our own McKee Branch has identified this year's candidate as Winnie Chen, a long-time member of the Keystone Interact Club at McKee. There were approximately 25 candidates from the nine branches requiring four panels of judges to complete the task. The six candidates I interviewed at the Piper branch were from Thunderbird and Vesper Branches. They proved their mettle with essays, recommendation letters, giving their three minute Theme Speech, undergoing a barrage of individual questions one on one, and panel questions from the five Judges. It was a very rewarding experience for both the six candidates and five Judges. Needless to say these were the "Best of the Best" and all judges were thoroughly impressed. I have renewed optimism and confidence in the youth of our country and our future. Tony Pistilli Christmas Tree Volunteers Needed Come out this Saturday, December 18 for the annual Christmas tree decorating event at the Community Center. Civic groups, including our club, will be decorating our club tree. We need a few volunteers. Please see Art Ammon for more information.. Famous Rotarians Woodrow Wilson, U. S. President and Nobel Prize Laureate in Peace, was a member of the Rotary Club of Birmingham, Alabama.
