2 FALL 2016 FRIENDLY CITY NEWS PAGE 2 The Town of Swansboro will hold an Evening Chat & Coffee Meeting on November 1 st at 6:00 pm at the Old Town Hall located at 502 Church Street. Join Commissioner Pat Turner for coffee and light refreshments to discuss Police, Safety, and Neighborhood Watches. Chats are informal and aimed at updating citizens on issues and projects in the Town of Swansboro. The next Chat will be a Breakfast Chat and is scheduled for December 6 th at 9:00 am. Topic Swansboro s Finances with Commissioner Roy Herrick. If there are topics you would like discussed, please feel to free those suggestions to Paula Webb at pwebb@ci.swansboro.nc.us. Please put Breakfast Chat Topic in the subject line. Holiday Closures Town Hall, ONWASA Satellite Office, and the Recreation Center will be closed in observance of the upcoming holidays. Per Chapter 92 of the Town Code of Ordinances, if grass or weed height exceeds 10 inches, it is considered to be a nuisance. If a violation is reported, the Town will notify the property owner and allow 15 days for correction of the violation. If the violation is not corrected within 15 days, the Town will remedy the violation at the expense of the property owner. Nominations sought for Sam Bland Service Award Swansboro town leaders are accepting nominations for the Samuel Swann Bland Outstanding Community Service Award. The award honors the diligence, hard work, leadership, and dedication that characterized the outstanding contributions of Sam Bland, the former superintendent of Hammocks Beach State Park, to the public and to the Swansboro community. Given annually to a Swansboro-area public employee, civic leader, or community volunteer who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to the improvement of community services, the honor is awarded by the Swansboro Board of Commissioners based on five criteria: impact, effort, stewardship, initiative, and innovation. Applications are available at Town Hall or online. Nominations are due by October 31, 2016.

4 FALL 2016 FRIENDLY CITY NEWS PAGE 4 A Letter From Your Town Manager I m always amazed and shocked on how fast the summer comes to an end, however, I m always excited about the season change, particularly fall. I m truly grateful today and blessed, as I write this latest addition, celebrating our endurance and perseverance through Tropical Storm Hermine and Hurricane Matthew. A casualty of Matthew, however, was this year s Mullet Festival. I hope that next year good weather will await those of us who routinely enjoy this event. Numerous fall events remain and I do hope you will join us downtown for the Halloweenie Roast (October 21-5:30 p.m.), Swansboro by Candlelight (November 12 5 to 9:00 p.m.), and Flotilla (November 25 6:00 p.m.). Sense of community is an important part of what makes Swansboro a special place to live, work and play! Events such as the Mullet Festival and Flotilla, our movies series and numerous other events bring us together wherein when difficulties arise, issues are easier to face together. To further nurture community dialogue, we recently held our first Breakfast Chat with Town Commissioners. The Breakfast Chat Series are held on the first Tuesday of the month (TIME AND LOCATION TBD). These chats, which are open to the public, provide opportunities to discuss ideas, concerns, review status of projects, etc. that are happening within Town. We hope this venue provides an opportunity to our citizens and/or business leaders to ask questions and spend time on topics not covered in our regular Commissioner meetings. Be on the lookout for updates regarding the Breakfast Chat Series as we plan to also hold evening discussions as well. In fact, our first evening series meeting will be on November 1 at the Old Town Hall with Commissioner Pat Turner. Join us for light refreshments and Commissioner Turner s program on Police, Safety and Neighborhood Watches with guest speaker Chief Jackson. As we move into November whispers of next fiscal year s budget planning begins. The Strategic Operating Plan (SOP) Committee will meet again in November to begin drafting the Town s first SOP and Capital Improvement Program. The SOP Committee hopes to have a working draft for the Board of Commissioner s review in the spring of The Committee laid the groundwork for many initiatives that are being implemented this fiscal year. As we move through this most important planning process we must continue to concentrate and build upon the five focus areas from last year s work: 1. Accessibility 2. Historic District 3. Enforcement of the Gateway Plan 4. Parks and Water Access 5. Police and Fire Protection Be on the lookout for future announcements as we can use your help and input related to advancing these important focus areas. 6 FALL 2016 FRIENDLY CITY NEWS PAGE 6 From the Mayor s Desk As we head into the fall season, we are extremely thankful to have been spared from the wrath of Hurricane Matthew. Our hearts go out to those in eastern North Carolina and other places that were hit harder and are still suffering. Our staff took this threat very seriously and our town was better prepared than ever to protect our citizens and property. In addition, in the storm's aftermath our Public Works Department has been working non-stop to pick up debris and restore normalcy to our beautiful town. Many thanks to our Administrative staff, Police, Fire, and Public Works Departments! Please continue to check our town website and social media pages for the area happenings, much is planned for the fall and winter seasons! Our Parks and Recreation Department is always planning something! Finally, I am so proud to live in a town where so many reach out to help others. Churches, clubs, nonprofits, and many individuals continuously lend a hand to others in need. I cannot think of a better example to give to our children as they grow into young adults! What a wonderful place to live!
