Today's announcement is a testament to the strong leadership in Charlotte that has followed a long North Carolina tradition of putting the needs and opportunities of our people before politics. We pledge to provide Republicans with the convention they expect, the state with the economic development it needs, the world with a true picture of the greatness of North Carolina, and our citizens with a robust but respectful political debate that shows the goodness of North Carolina. We congratulate the City Council, County Commissioners and the Visitors and Convention Bureau for an incredible winning bid. While there are so many to thank, we must single out Mayor Lyles for her steadfast leadership. She has put her city and state first. Under President Trump we have already seen national unemployment for African Americans drop to 6.8% this past December; lowest ever since the Dept. of Labor began tracking data in Raleigh and Charlotte rank fifth and sixth respectively as cities in the U.S. in which African Americans are doing the best economically. We stand ready and willing with an active volunteer base to make this historic event a success. - SCGOP Chair Drew McKissick ACTION ALERT Craven County Board of Commissioners to Vote on Resolution regarding the Equal Rights Amendment, Monday August 7:00 PM The Craven County Board of Commissioners will again hear a petition to support endorsing the Equal Rights Amendment on Monday, August 6, 7:00 PM in the Commissioner s Meeting Room upstairs at 406 Craven Street in New Bern. The resolution, if approved, calls for hearings and ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment by the North Carolina General Assembly. There is a large contingent of people who have been attending the Craven County Board of Commissioner s Meetings each month and applying pressure for the Commissioners to vote and endorse this resolution. As you may be aware, the Equal Rights Amendment was given 10 years ( ) to be ratified by two-thirds of the States. It was ratified by 35 states, 3 short of those states needed. The ERA Amendment ratification process expired under the extended deadline on June 30, At that time, the U.S. Supreme Court had agreed to hear a case from five States who wished to reverse their decision to ratify the Amendment. This case was never heard due to the amendment s expiration. We are asking for you to encourage our Commissioner s to vote no on this resolution as the ERA Amendment is 46 years old. Women s rights has seen great progress in equality before the law and in society which renders this amendment obsolete. We agree that equality is important, however this amendment has expired. Send it back to Congress and update the language and provisions for Voting yes on this resolution is like replacing your carpet with green shag and installing avocado appliances in your kitchen. 46 years is a long time. Please attend the Craven County Board of Commissioner s meeting on Monday evening. Lend your support and encouragement. Do not, by your absence, help resuscitate an archaic amendment.
