1 QB Sunrise Scuttlebutt December 2, 2014 Family Month Scuttlebutt is a weekly newsletter highlighting the activities of the Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach Sunrise Service Above Self Duty Roster on Dec 9th Program TBA Greeter Bill Duckenfield Invocation Blake Whaley Sign In Desk Allen Ball Rotary Moment Ron Stothers An Update on Polio: Ø Around Rotary s World First the good news: Nigeria is closer than ever to eradicating polio, riding a successful effort to reach children in seven northern states at highest risk for the disease. Rotary's Nigeria PolioPlus Committee recently met with leaders of two communities notoriously opposed to immunization, mainly on religious grounds. They persuaded the leaders to endorse vaccination by obtaining government assurance that mobile health camps would provide free checkups, medications, immunization against diseases besides polio, and other services. Nigeria has registered only 6 cases so far this year down from over 100 last year. Ø Now the not so good news: Polio cases spiked in Pakistan this year, 246 compared to 63 for the same period in No polio vaccinator had ever set foot in Killi Baksho, near Pakistan's rugged northwest border with Afghanistan. Most people there have long opposed immunization, believing the polio vaccine causes infertility or AIDS. The combination of that public mistrust and intimidation from militant groups has been nothing short of deadly. In 2013, 20 polio vaccinators and nine police officers assigned to guard them were killed in Pakistan. Winning community trust is a slow process but is ongoing. Ø Ø Better news from Afghanistan: In Afghanistan, not a single case of endemic polio occurred in Of the 11 cases reported, all were linked to cross-border transmission from neighboring Pakistan. This achievement reflects the success of social mobilizers, community elders, and religious leaders in forging community trust. Guests Three guests this morning, Parksville AM Rotarian friend Bashir El Khalifawi, welcomed by John; our speaker Lonnie Barr with Ken; and Arlene Costigan in attendance to see what Rotary is all about and made to feel very welcome by Bev and Deb. Celebrations Ed and Pat are celebrating their 14th Anniversary today. A wedding anniversary is the celebration of love, trust, partnership, tolerance and tenacity. 3 Invocation It is good to recognize how different we are. Our talents, our dreams, our backgrounds, our occupations; and it is good to know that when You created each of us, You broke the mold. No one is exactly like anyone else. Even our thumbprint and our voice track tell us how unique we are. Yet we thank You that that we can take these differences and mobilize them for the good of Rotary and our community. In our differences we can think the same thoughts and move together toward common goals. Bless us as we meet together. Thank you for our individuality and also for our common bond of Rotary. Amen. Rotary Moment How Service Above Self became Rotary s principal motto was Susan s Rotary moment topic. Early in its history the members of the first Rotary club realized that fellowship and mutual self-interest were not enough to hold the group together. In 1907 the Chicago club adopted a practical service project, the installation of a public comfort station in downtown Chicago. As Rotary grew and more clubs were formed, the first convention was organized in Chicago in 1910 and at that conference the idea of commitment to service was established with the expression He profits most who serves his fellows best. The following year Service not Self was promoted and the two sayings were modified to He profits most who serves best and Service above self. In 1989 the RI council on Legislation established Service Above Self as the organizations principal motto. 4 Christmas Home Tour Susan circulated the Home Tour volunteer shift schedule (below). At their last meeting the committee added a second shift so a few more volunteers are still needed. (see the schedule below and contact Susan if you can fill one of the TBA s.) Doug advised that the Blue Booties pictured above should be worn by both Hosts and Guests and asked that someone on the last (12:30 3:30) shift collect and return the Booties. Maybe Christmas, the Grinch thought, doesn t come from a store. Dr. Seuss

He is circulating an agenda and the 2015 Committee structure. Ø Christmas Dinner: Stuart advised that tickets are now on sale at $30 for our Dec 16 Annual Christmas dinner. Ø Nominating Committee: PP Deb and PE Mike issued a second call for nominations for our Board, the final call will occur at our AGM next Tuesday.

6 Program Lonnie Barr from Arrowsmith Search and Rescue was our speaker this morning and he updated members on the group s activities. Recently the clubs Command Vehicle was replaced and they are now in need of replacing their Equipment Vehicle. Currently they have too much gear for their existing vehicle, which was donated by BC Hydro quite a few years ago. The club was successful in purchasing a new box that will adequately house the equipment, now they need a truck that will accommodate the newly purchase Box. They estimate a new truck will cost them $30,000 - $40,000 and have applied for funds through the BC Gaming Grant program. Our club has long been a supporter of Arrowsmith Search and Rescue and this morning Community Service Director Garnet Millar presented Lonnie with a cheque for $2000. It s just a job.
