10 OCTOBER 2016 FIRE CHIEF MANLY S MONTHLY MESSAGE WAKING UP AT NIGHT? Try These: 1. Set a Schedule: Avoid the temptation to sleep in or stay up late on the weekend; instead, try to maintain the same sleepwake pattern all week. 2. Upgrade your Bedroom: Buy fresh pillows, replace a worn-out mattress, and kick the TV out of the room you sleep in. 3. Lay off the Lights: Turning on a lamp when you wake in the middle of the night can reset your internal clock. You might wake up the same time the next night. Disasters are major events that can strike anywhere and at any time. In a disaster, traditional and First Responder capabilities such as fire, police, paramedics and utility personnel will be overwhelmed and unable to immediately assist individuals. Preparing your neighborhood is vital. Neighbors will likely be the first ones to offer assistance. Neighbors who are prepared offer more effective response to a disaster and are more self-sufficient in the first 72 hours after a disaster. Begin by thinking about who are your neighbors. We suggest 5 to 10 households because the first hour of a disaster response is vital and you want the size of your neighborhood to be manageable. The CERT for more information. Spending a couple of hours with neighbors can help your whole neighborhood be prepared to handle an event that could overwhelm all of you as individuals. The program is similar to having a neighborhood watch program.
