2 Volume 23, Issue 7 Page 2 Chautauqua County Board of Elections Commissioners Norman P. Green and Brian C. Abram will be speaking to the LWV about newly enacted election reforms that include Early Voting in NYS for the first time this year. The early voting plan will allow for county voters to cast ballots at three sites in the county the ten days before any election starting with this November's General Election. Other voting enhancements new this year that the election commissioners will cover include Election Day voter registration, automatic update of people's voter registrations when they move anywhere in the state and allowing young people to preregister to vote when they are 16 and 17. Additionally they will cover the merging of federal and state primary dates and the impact of the change. At this important meeting on May 8th, we will install officers, pass our annual budget (page 6) and recognize important members who have worked diligently to provide leadership in programming, organizing voter service activities, recording board meetings, entering membership data, and making sure our voice is heard on issues we care about. The reservation form is on page 4. We could use some help in the coming year. Secretary - to record minutes for 10 board meetings. Someone to put information on our easy to use website. Do you use excel? If so, we could use your help to enter members information. We are looking for people to host our booth at the Fredonia Farm Festival in August. Please contact Michaela Golya, golyama@netsync.net. The program committee will always welcome a new face to help out with various tasks and we would like your suggestions for next year s programming. Contact Lisa Mertz, lmertz@icloud.com. In 2020 we would like to submit periodic articles to local newspapers about women who played important roles in the suffrage movement. The list of names is far reaching. However this could be an enjoyable project for anyone who is interested in history. On March 14 th several LWV voters went to Chautauqua Institute for two presentations. One was about the DAR and the other about six women farmers of Jefferson County New York who presented a resolution to the NYS Constitutional Convention in 1846 outlining reasons why women should be able to vote. This was two years before the Seneca Falls Convention. We hope to hear this presentation again in We were able to distribute information about LWV Chautauqua County at this program. Election Day means over two thousand people will work at schools, churches and other facilities processing voters so that we can conduct a fair election, as perfectly as possible. It is a long day but it is very rewarding to know you have helped your community choose its leaders. You must be registered in either the Democratic or Republican parties, be able to speak English, read and write in English (bilingual inspectors, especially Spanish speakers, are very welcome). You must be able to work the entire shift. As an Election Inspector you will be required to complete a course encompassing the processes and procedures related to being an inspector. What tasks will you perform as a poll worker? Prepare the polling place for voting Set up the voting equipment Process the voters Demonstrate voting procedures to the voters Close the polling place Canvass and report the results Assist voter if requested by the voter With Early Voting now the law, the need for inspectors is even greater. 6 Volume 23, Issue 7 Page 6 Students Inside Albany is an intensive four day residential training experience, free to the participant, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of New York State. It is held in the spring. It is designed to immerse students in the process by which public policy is proposed, enacted and changed in New York State, and to educate them as to how they can influence and affect this process. Albany insiders discuss the operations of New York State government including how policy is shaped and enacted. Students develop a knowledge of the disparate forces that influence policy development. Students also observe Assembly and Senate sessions and shadow both their Assembly members and Senators. The LWV of Chautauqua County has chosen Caleb Lokietek. I am 18 years old and am currently enrolled in Dunkirk High School. I am an avid reader and enjoy learning more about the world around me. Under the direction of the board, the New York State League has signed on as an organizational partner to New York Counts New York Counts 2020 is a broad based, statewide coalition composed of racial, ethnic, immigrant, religious, health, education, labor, housing, social services, and business groups working in partnership with state and local government officials. Their aim is to ensure that New Yorkers across the state -particularly marginalized communities in hard-to-count districts- can fully maximize their participation in the 2020 Census. As a partner, the League will be working with the coalition to create and distribute educational materials and trainings.
