WEST COAST CHAPTER Issue 9 September 2015 MARCH / APRIL 2016 PRESIDENT You can make a difference each and everyone of you. Anytime now you can be sure that some legislator will be introducing a new helmet law because he believes in government intervention in your life...how do you feel about that??? Say something, do something...there is power in numbers! Let's show them that we have a voice...make sure you're registered and that you vote...ok rant over. Please be safe and I would love to have a monthly meeting with 50 or so people...come on out...thanks Your pres., Myakka Mike VICE PRESIDENT A lot has happened! We were chosen, along with Peace River, SouthWest, Estero and Gator Alley chapters to put together and run a state party to be held at Peace River Campgrounds! West Coast will be running the Rodeo (of course J) throughout the weekend (October 7-9, 2016). We will need lots of members to volunteer at this party. This is how State is trying to make money without dipping into Chapter funds. The State is also looking at doing a gun raffle still being discussed. Stay tuned for more info. The proposed membership amendments did not pass - we, as a whole, turned down 1st and West Coast agreed on turning all down until new ones are written. Elections are coming up!!! We will open up the floor for nominations for all board positions at this chapter meeting (Sunday, 4/17/2016). The Vunerable Users Bill passed but before you start whooping and hollering -- the term motorcycles was removed by Senator Jeff Clemens (D) District 27 Palm Beach County. More info on this at our upcoming chapter meeting. IF ANY ONE CAN COME UP WITH AWAY TO GET OUR MEMBERS INVOLVED PLEASE LET US KNOW! We need more member support! We are thinking about putting together a run anyone have any ideas? SLO MO (State) made us a new program and a disk so we can get in and update our links etc. which some are a little old hopefully this will be done before next meeting. State Membership got our December membership straightened out somehow our list was misplaced Thank you! Ride Safe Victor
TREASURER The chapter is financially sound. Any member in good standing who has questions regarding chapter finances can contact the treasurer and/or president to make an appointment for review. SGT-AT-ARMS Season is almost over... Ride safe! Glenn Luig A B A T E AMERICAN BIKERS / BROTHERHOOD AIMING/AGAINST TOWARD/TOTALITARIAN EDUCATION / ENACTMENTS JOIN ABATE
of Interest From the March/April 2016 Masterlink PRESIDENT'S REPORT Doc Reichenbach I want to thank Peace River for going out of their way to host our February state meeting. They did a great job with hardly any time to prepare. Your chapter showed what can be accomplished by working together. All chapters are a part of the whole organization subject to the same rules as everyone else. ABATE appreciates the dedication and hard work that most of you do but then we have the few who like to complain, to either hear themselves talk or are misinformed by someone who is in their ear. We all are in this for our freedom of the road and to protect our rights. If you don t want to do that then this isn t the organization for you. There are many organizations out there who would love to have people who only believe in charity or would like you to join their club. As this is written there is a bill in the legislature that will punish people who run over vulner- able road users like us. There is also a substantial amount of money in the budget for mo- torcycle safety. Last year the Governor vetoed it but this year I had a long conversation with his of ce and we will see if that gets the money through. ABATE of Florida, Inc. is the only motorcycle rights organization that lobbies the state legislature here in Florida. We also lobby our congressmen and women along with our two senators on legislation in the nation s capitol. We are dedicated to freedom of the road and ght for all motorcyclists even the ones who don t support us. EVERY motorcyclist either a sport bike rider, cruiser rider or a club member should say thank you to every ABATE mem- ber for protecting their rights. Our next meeting will be hosted by the Brevard Chapter and hope to see you there. Until then Ride Safe and Free and thank an ABATE member for keeping it that way. PRESIDENT Doc Reichenbach: Vice President of ABATE of Florida, Inc. Dennis Mudder Rudoi has resigned. He needs to devote his time to his family. Doc has not lled the position and would rather keep it open until elections. In December a by-law change went through without having it go back to the chapters. As of right now the by-law change from December is null and void. Doc had numerous calls. Jim said we ve been doing this several times and the only difference in this one was the $300 at which Doc stopped him and said because it was different it had to go back to the chapters for vote. STATE PARTY: This will be an adult party. Everyone over 18 can attend but must be 21 to drink. No dogs. Billy Bird has reserved the Peace River campground for November which is when we originally were going to have it. He will talk to them again to secure the campground for 2nd week in October. Five chapters talked about hosting the event together. Grizz said this was a good idea as long as chapters gave money to State. Patti said Spooks has been going downhill for the last 5 years. No Spooks this year and Hillsborough has asked to be released from hosting the October meeting. The State meeting will be 10-8 and the event will be 10/7-10/9. Sally suggested we advertise the party as a hot new party so people don t think it s another Spooks. Doc suggested name party ABATE of Florida, Inc. State Biker Bash.
of Interest From the March/April 2016 Masterlink TREASURER Patti Nasrallah: Started out by saying to chapters: make a donation to State. Look at balance sheet for total assets. We are living checkbook to checkbook. Next month we will be paying out the Bike Week drawing ticket winners. Chapters have only paid half of the amount of our yearly liability insurance. If you times $10,000 times ten years, that is what State has paid to make up the difference. Question was posed on how we were going to pay the lobbyist. Patti explained that monthly income from the chapters usually covers it. Question was also asked why does the lobbyist contract end in November Contract ends in June but we are still paying until November. Sales tax is not income to State. We still have one more insurance payment. Ticket sales have declined since the rst year, this year was even harder to sell tickets. Some chapters have made donations to State to help with expenses. Hillsborough pays for the State Treasurer s expenses to meetings. Gulf Coast contributes each month, Alachua and Southwest donated a percentage of their bank balance and Treasure Coast and Southeast each gave sizable checks. Motion to accept Treasurer s report made by Grizz (Lake County) seconded by Dale (Inerstate) and carried. Thanks to Alachua, Gulf Coast, Southwest, Southeast and Treasure Coast for their donations to State. At this point a comment was made that we have two weeks worth of operating income and that it was no way to run a business. Doc responded that no one wanted to work the campground so it folded. The lobbyist is necessary. The helmet law was passed by the efforts of the lobbyist. There are some states that all chapter money goes to the state organization. Many BOD members pay their own way. The brotherhood/sisterhood has gone out of ABATE. Last time we asked members to call their legislators only 20 people called. The books have always been open for anyone who wants to look at them. Patti said read the nancial report, compare expense and income. We received $375 for event insurance but spent $3,000. ABATE has accomplished a lot over the years, raised a lot of safety money to buy and distribute safety products and LOBBYIST Doc Reichenbach: SB332 has unanimously passed the Transportation Committee and now goes to the Judiciary committee. HB253 has one more committee-economic Affairs, which should meet this week. Tuesday morning our bill will be heard. Senator Clemens (D-Palm Beach County) has put in an amendment to remove just one word: motorcycles! If he gets it removed from this bill and it is not passed then it is dead. If he pulls it from this bill he can add it to the bill in the next committee which he is on. Senator Audrey Gipson, who is a member of Duval County chapter, is co-chairman of the Page 8 ABATE of Florida, Inc. Mar/Apr 2016 Judiciary committee. Her number is Florida Dept. HSMV vulnerable road user s reports includes motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians. Doc will be taking this info with him when he goes to the committee meeting. You now have to ll out a form to have an item put in the budget. Doc has asked for $300,000. The minute we know it is in the nal budget we need to start calling Gov. Scott s of ce to ask that it be approved. Question was asked to Doc if we were going to sell tickets again next year. It has been hard to sell them and he recommends that we do not sell tickets for cash prizes. Brandi (Gulf Coast) talked to the Harley dealer there who said they would sell us a Harley at cost to use for a drawing. The possibility of raf ing a gun was discussed. All the legalities would have to be researched and would have to be eligible to win (pass background check). This could be arranged through a gun shop. If winner doesn t pass there could be a secondary prize. Jerry T. can help with the legal issues. Steve said he would donate a HUGLU 12 gage over/under. We also could get a 30/30 Henry or Winchester. Doc said drawing should be in October at the State party.
of Interest From the March/April 2016 Masterlink NEW BUSINESS: 1. Billy Bird will be Supervisor of Elections. Nominations were taken for the BOD: President: James Doc Reichenbach II, accepted Vice President: Darrin Brooks, accepted; Will Grizz Deaver, declined Secretary: Shelly Johnston, accepted Treasurer: Patti Nasrallah, not at this time; Debbie Hamby, will give decision at next meeting Sargent-at-Arms: TJ Painter, accepted; Marcus Hotelling, accepted; Frenchie Moreland; not at this time Membership: Laurie Hanley, accepted; Grace Lord, not at this time Masterlink: Bob Alexander, declined PR/Communications: no nominees Website: no nominees Products: no nominees Legislative: Darrin Brooks, accepted Legal: Larry Crow, Jerry T.: neither were there to accept nomination Do we really need a PAID Lobbyist? There are pro s and con s to this argument, but the bottom line is we are ALL LOBBYISTS! Numerous other State s rely on their membership and the Board to step up and lobby their government why can t we? Why do we need a PAID lobbyist? Doc s proposal is here for your review.i am not sure if any other proposals were received. I say Florida Chapters need to end this now.no MORE PAID LOBBYIST!
