1 It s All at Your Library! February 2018 Program Guide PPLC A Monthly Publication of the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative Two Meet The Author Events This Month Largo Turns a Page 2018 Author Visit and Book Signing Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 1:00 pm Reception and Book Signing in Gallery 120 ~ Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 2:30 pm Author Talk in Jenkins Community Wing The fourth annual Largo Turns a Page community read at Largo Public Library features a riveting debut novel by Imbolo Mbue. Behold the Dreamers is a 2017 Oprah s Book Club pick and winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award and lit up the literary community when it appeared. Mbue, a self-taught writer, has crafted a deeply empathetic novel about marriage, class, and race, and the crevasses in the American Dream. Behold the Dreamers tells the story of Jende Jonga, a Cameroonian immigrant living in Harlem who lands a job as a chauffeur for Clark Edwards, a senior executive at Lehman Brothers, in the fall of Jende hopes the new job will enable him, his adored wife, Neni, and his young son, to live a better life in America. When Neni is hired as household help by Clark s wife, their situation only improves. But in the course of their work, Jende and Neni begin to witness infidelities, skirmishes, and family secrets. Desperate to shield the fragile life they ve built in New York, the Jongas protect their employers, even when the wealthy couple s secrets begin to drive a wedge between Jende and Neni. Then, with the 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers, all four lives are dramatically upended, and Jende and Neni are forced to make an impossible choice. The community read continues until the first weekend in March when we will welcome Behold the Dreamers author Imbolo Mbue to the library. Readers are invited to meet the author at a public reception and book signing in Gallery 120, where copies of Behold the Dreamers will be available for sale. The Author Talk will follow at 2:30 in the Jenkins Community Wing. Seats can be reserved for the Author Talk by picking up free tickets at Largo Library. Tickets are not needed for the book signing.
