1 LIBRARY COOPERATIVE CALENDAR OF EVENTS A Monthly Publication of the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative Page 1 JULY 2006 Issue 7 Heritage Village Awarded Grant to Save Tapes The Archives & Library at Heritage Village, Pinellas County s 21-acre living history museum, provides a treasure trove of resources and is free and open to the public. In addition to photos, scrapbooks, maps, and a 3500-volume library, visitors will soon be able to see restored episodes of Pinellas Past, a video journal that has been capturing Pinellas County history since Initially, Pinellas Past was recorded using the best existing technology, but the years have not been kind to the master tapes and as a result, early signs of deterioration were becoming apparent. Heritage Village was recently awarded funds from the Florida Local Historical Records Grant Program to preserve the first two years of those master tapes in a new, more stable format. Matching funds were provided by the Pinellas County Historical Society. Subjects documented include pioneer family interviews, architecture, ethnic and cultural group histories and local takes on nationwide issues. Once the transfer is complete, early episodes of Pinellas Past will be available for viewing on DVD at the Archives & Library. Eventually, media clips will be offered on the Heritage Village web site, allowing remote access. The Archives & Library is open to the public Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9-11 a.m. or by appointment. Pinellas County residents with a valid driver s license or ID card may check out items for a 2-week period. Call (727) for more information or visit Heritage. Guests were welcomed by Mayor Rick Baker and had an opportunity to hear keynote speaker David Boulton, the director of the Children of the Code Project. The conference hosted several special programs including sessions by Pinellas Public Library Cooperative staff and member libraries. Attendees had an opportunity to learn about the PPLC Deaf Literacy Center with presenter Rosa Rodriguez; the PRIME TIME FAMILY READING TIME grant programs in Clearwater and St. Petersburg with Jana Fine (Clearwater Youth Services Manager) and Elaine Birkinshaw (St. Petersburg Manager, Special Projects); as well as the R.E.A.D. Dogs (reading education assistance dogs), an organization that hosts programs at various member libraries to increase literacy skills of children through registered Pet Partners. The conference offered an Adult Learner Day on May 3 which focused on programs and events for the adult learner and their literacy providers. The PPLC Board of Directors sponsored the Adult Learner Luncheon as part of this event. In addition to sponsorship, PPLC staff members provided leadership as part of the Conference Planning Committee for this year s event. Paula Godfrey, PPLC Coordinator of Special Projects & Grant Services, chaired the Awards Committee for this year s symposium. The Conference recognized the outstanding achievement of an adult learner, volunteer, literacy practitioner, business, and program and media partner. Greg Smith, executive director of the Florida Literacy Coalition stated, This is our 22 nd year of hosting the Florida Literacy Conference and we are confident it will be one of our best ever. Many attendees agreed, this year s event was a successful opportunity to show support to the many adult and family literacy practitioners across the State of Florida.
