Mich. Whitecaps - Lake County Ballpark - Page 10 Joint meetings with ASPE are held at Harry s Steak House, 5654 Brecksville Road (Route 21), in Independence, just north of Rockside Road and I-77. Each Training Session starts with a Product Show at 5:00 PM. NOH Chapter Board Meetings convene at 5:00 PM also, and dinner follows at 6:00 PM. Each Training Session/Joint Meeting and dinner will cost $24.00 per person (subject to change) payable at the door. Attendance at these State Certified Training Sessions will earn you Continuing Education Units (CEU s) for each session attended. The Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE April 17, 2012 Hello All, It is hard to believe that May is almost here. This is bringing us closer to the end of another successful year of meetings for our Chapter. There is one more meeting on May 9th to join in on and I hope to see you all there. At the last meeting the Chapter presented the awards for the annual ASSE/Local 55/CPI Apprenticeship Contest. It is always a nice event to present the awards and introduce these apprentices to what ASSE does and can offer. Also at this meeting, we finalized plans and set a date for the 1st ASSE/Local 55 Plumbing Merit Badge training session for area Boy Scouts. This program is to help educate and introduce Boy Scouts to the profession of Plumbing and how Plumbing affects them, their families, the area they live in and the world. I would like to thank all of the volunteers who will make this program work. If any Chapter member wishes to become involved, please contact me at jshank@plumbers55.com for the information as soon as possible. There is also a wellness day at an area church that we are partaking in. We will be manning a table to help educate the public of the importance of Plumbing in everyday life and how ASSE helps to ensure that we all enjoy sanitary conditions. I cannot think of a better way to promote ASSE than with a group of Hospitals, Doctors and Nurses. More details are inside of this newsletter. This brings me to another point, just because the Chapter meetings are ending next month until fall, doesn t mean our Chapter is finished for the year. There are plenty of events and promotions that you can become involved in throughout the summer. I encourage you all to get in contact with us and see what we are up to. Review/Approval of Minutes of Mar. 14th, 2012 meeting Motion made by Pat and Seconded by Rich - Motion approved 2. Chapter Financial Statements Current totals - $4, as of April 11th, 2012 List of expenses and income since March 14th, 2012 Reviewed - approved Jason reported that CPI will be giving a check to the NOH Chapter for the apprenticeship awards Motion by Pat and Bob for the NOH Chapter to continue the NOH scholarship for ASSE at $1, for this year. Approved - Check due by November. 3. Reimbursements None reported 4. Committee Reports Golf Committee Dan elected Chairman other committee members Terry, Joe, Rich and Bob (Photos) Dan reported that mailing list is coming together to go out next week the Registration forms are on the NOH website now. Rich reported that if anyone wants the 2011 Annual Meeting Yearbook (blue book) they must request it from the ASSE International Office. 5. Old Business Open House 2012 Jason reported that Local 55 and CPI are not going to be a part of an open house this year. Moving in a different direction. May revisit in a couple of years. Old Business (Continued) Boy Scout Plumbing Merit Badge June 2nd is the date of the 1st Merit badge session anyone without their applications in will not be able to attend If you need an application, contact Jason soon. Reviewed merit badge items and anyone attending is asked to let Jason know what part(s) they want to do. Terry reported on the Strawberry Festival/Health Fair We are all set to have a table for this event on Sunday, June 10th from 11:30 A.M. 2:30 P.M. at Parma South Presbyterian Church on Pearl Rd. All members are asked to show up and spend some time at the table to promote ASSE. Looking at showing this on website for promotion. (See write-up on Page 7. of this issue.) Reviewed upcoming Mid-year meeting of ASSE here in Cleveland. All are encouraged to attend Jason submitted signed nomination form from the NOH Chapter nominating Bill Hall (MAL) for the position of 3rd Vice President of the International ASSE for the upcoming Annual Meeting. 6. New Business Pat suggested recognizing Ben s work on the Plumbing Standards magazine to be revisited next meeting. 4 NOH Chapter of ASSE / Cleveland Chapter of ASPE APRIL 11, 2012 Joint Training Session/Meeting On April 11, 2012, approximately 60 members and guests from the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE, Plumbers Local 55 UA, and the Cleveland Chapter of ASPE were assembled for the Presentation of Awards for the Apprenticeship Contest that took place on March 12, After the dinner and the Award Presentation, a Joint Training Session on 2009 IPC Code Changes was presented by Mr. Jack Somma, (shown above), Plumbing Plans Examiner, Division of Industrial Compliance and Labor, State of Ohio, from Reynoldsburg, (Columbus), Ohio Jack Presented a very comprehensive, one on one Power Point synopsis of the various IPC Code changes that were put into effect on November 2011 as part of the Ohio Plumbing Code (OPC) covering basically commercial plumbing applications and 4 family suites and above. He suggested checking into the website: to review these changes and download the PDF files which are in public domain and free of charge. Jack went on to explain each section in the Code that had modifications or changes specifically: Chapter 3 - General Regulations Chapter 4 - Fixtures, Faucets and Fixture Fittings Chapter 5 - Water Heaters Chapter 6 - Water Supply and Distribution Chapter 7 - Sanitary Drainage Chapter 8 - Indirect/Special Waste Chapter 9 - Vents Chapter 10 - Traps, Interceptors and Separators Chapter 11 - Storm Drainage This Power Point Presentation is available in PDF format on the NOH Web site listed below, and does a complete job of explaining all the pertinent changes and modifications listed above. 6 Additional Happenings at the Northern Ohio Chapter August 2012 ASSE/ASPE Annual Golf Outing August 2, 2012 The Annual ASSE/ASPE Golf Outing has been scheduled for August 2nd, 2012 at the Fowler s Mill Golf Club in Chesterland, Ohio. Details and Entry Forms will be included with future issues of the Newsletter, and on Pages 11 and 12 of this issue. It is not to early to start to promote this good time event by soliciting Foursomes, Hole Sponsors and Prize Donors. Dan Sugrue of EPS Supply will be heading up the effort for ASSE assisted by a committee from the NOH Chapter of ASSE. Contact Dan at to assist with the promotion. Greg Trombold of Trombold Equipment, , is the organizer for the Cleveland Chapter of ASPE, our partner in this joint Golf Outing. We provide 18 Holes of Golf, a cart, lunch, beverage, door prizes, and a fine steak dinner at the conclusion and awards ceremony. Prizes for longest drive, closest to the pin, and hole in one.

8 ASSE Northern Ohio Chapter - Plumbers Local 55 UA CPI - Annual Apprentice Awards Ceremony April 11, 2012 On March 12, 2012, 51 First through Fifth year Apprentices were available to take the Annual Apprentice Contest Test sponsored by the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE, Local 55 UA Plumbers JATC, and the CPI at the Training Center shown below. They assembled at 4:30 P.M. for Pizza and Pop before taking the 50 question (True and false-multiple choice questions) starting at 5:00 P.M. The incentive for doing well on this test is a first prize of $300.00, second prize of $200.00, and a third prize of $ Each winning contestant also receives a free one year membership to the NOH Chapter of ASSE. They are also presented their awards at the April Meeting of the Chapter, where they receive their meal and a guests meal courtesy of the Chapter. This year s winners were: First Place Tim Wheeler 4th Yr.. Apprentice $ (Gorman-Lavelle) Second Place Jeff Surella 4th Yr.. Apprentice $ (Soehnlen Piping) Third Place (Tied) Josh Ihlenfield 1st Yr.. Apprentice $ (E.B. Katz Co.) Jeff Kuchera 1st Yr.. Apprentice $ (Northern Ohio Plumbing) This was the first year in over 25 years that a tie had to be broken with a 51st question (tie-breaker). As luck would have it the tied 3rd Place contestants both answered that question correctly and a tie still existed. The Board of Directors from the NOH Chapter grading the tests agreed that they both should get the $ prize. Because the Apprentices had already left the JATC after taking the test, we were unable to get photos of the winners in the March issue. A complete photo gallery of the Awards presentations (Cash and Certificates), and photos of the winners is on page 9. This test was put together by Jason Shank, Training Director and President of the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE and his trainers from articles, codes, training curriculum, and ASSE Standards, in an effort to promote the Plumbing Industry in Cleveland and to encourage graduating Apprentices to join ASSE to further their knowledge and networking efforts in the Industry.

9 ASSE Northern Ohio Chapter - Plumbers Local 55 UA CPI - Annual Apprentice Awards Ceremony April 11, 2012 Meet the Winners of the 2012 ASSE /Plumbers Local 55 JATC / CPI Annual Apprenticeship Contest Jason Shank, Training Director presents the certificate and a check for $ to First Place winner Tim Wheeler a 4th yr. Apprentice from Gorman-Lavelle. Jeff Surella, a 4th yr. Apprentice from Soehnlen Piping, accepts his certificate and check for $ for his efforts at 2nd Place in the contest. Josh Ihlenfield, 1st yr. Apprentice from E.B.Katz Co., accepts his $ award and certficate for coming in tied for Third Place, a first for this Contest at the JATC. Also tied for Third Place with a certificate and $ check was Jeff Kuchera, a 1st yr. Apprentice from the Northern Ohio Plumbing Co. The Apprentices and their guests were treated to a dinner meal of Roast Beef, Roast Turkey with gravy and stuffing, and the fellowship and knowledge of the other 60 guests and members of the NOH Chapter of ASSE, the Cleveland Chapter of ASPE, and associates from UA Local 55. Each winning Apprentice will now be enrolled in a free one year membership into the International ASSE through the auspices of the Northern Ohio Chapter. Congratulations and good luck in your future goals in the Plumbing Industry.
