May 17, 2009 As your Northern Ohio Chapter President, I attended the Mid-year Board of Director s Meeting at the Embassy Suites, in Independence. Many changes are being accomplished at the International Office, in Westlake, OH, under the direction of International President Richard Prospal. At our last Chapter meeting in April, I had the pleasure of visiting with Ken Van Wagnen, our new Business Manager. Ken brings a wealth of business experience to our International ASSE organization. His efforts are already producing positive results in his short time on the job We are fortunate to have found Ken! The International Board of ASSE will be presenting several By-Law changes to be voted on at our Annual Meeting in San Antonio, TX later on this September. The proposed By- Law changes will be printed in the International Newsletter, soon. I hope you will study these proposed changes and will contact me if you have any comments on the recommendations of the Board of Directors. I will then let your wishes be known at the Annual Meeting. Congratulations to Ken Kerr on his election as 1st Vice President (President Elect) to the American Backflow Association. Ken s experience as a past International President of ASSE will be invaluable to him when he assumes the duties of President of the ABA. The Residential Sprinkler Standard will soon be in the new codes. You can contact the International Office to purchase copies at membership rates. This year will be the initial offering of the Gerri Tesar Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by the Northern Ohio Chapter. If you know of any candidate, please have them contact the International Office for a Scholarship Application Packet. The cut-off date for submitting applications is September 22, ASSE, as an Organization, is on the move! Our influence in the industry, is evident in every facet of the plumbing industry. You can be very proud that you are a contributing member of this fine organization. Lets have a good showing at the ASSE/ASPE Golf Outing, August 6, 2009 at Fowlers Mill Golf Course. 2 Report on the Board of Director s Meeting The Chapter Board Meeting was held on May 13, The Board Members in attendance were Pat Sugrue, Joe Hallman, Ken Kerr, Terry Tahsler, and Bob Tesar. Because of a lack of a quorum, an informal board meeting took place. Pat Sugrue requested help to promote the Annual ASSE/ASPE Golf Outing at Fowler s Mill Golf Course this year on August 6, 2009, and The Captain s Baseball Game on July 18, We have acquired another Advertiser in the Connex-It for this year. Patronize and welcome The Libb Co., the Rep. for Woodford Manufacturing, as a supporter of the NOH Chapter of ASSE. THE NORTHERN OHIO CHAPTER MONTHLY MEETING - MAY 2009 MAY 13, 2009 Joint ASSE/ASPE Meeting The joint meeting was attended by over 40 members and guests of ASSE and ASPE. The guest speakers, Chris Yarima and Mike Kelly from Millipore Corporation, Application Specialists on Lab Water, presented their Power Point on the Basics of Water Purification for Lab use. (See review elsewhere in this issue). Prior to the Joint Training Session, the NOH President, Pat Sugrue, conducted an informal meeting with the attending Board Members and discussed the following: Continued efforts by Bob Tesar to try and generate more revenue for the NOH Scholarship Fund by solicitations for more advertisers in the NOH Newsletter Connex-It. Another recent half page ad was taken out by the Libb Co, the Woodford Mfg. Reps in this area. Welcome aboard as a patron! Pat suggested that we create an Acknowledgement Award for someone in our Industry or Member of the Chapter that has contributed to the advancement of our ideals and our motto. The award could be given once or twice a year at a regular meeting, and consist of a plaque and a biographical achievement resume in the Connex-It. We will look into this suggestion. Pat also solicited help in promoting our coming events this summer: The ASSE/ASPE Golf Outing - August 6, 2009 and the Captains Ball Game - July 18, Forms elsewhere in this Connex-It. Northern Ohio Chapter Joint ASSE/ASPE Schedule of Coming Events, Meeting Topics & Functions: July 18, 2009 Lake County Captains Baseball Game (see form on page 6) August 6, 2009 ASSE/ASPE Golf Outing Fowler s Mill Golf Course (see form on page 5) September 2009 Annual ASPE/ASSE Clambake TBA Joint meetings with ASPE are held at Harry s Steak House, 5654 Brecksville Rd. (Route 21), in Independence, Ohio just north of Rockside Road and I-77. Each Training Session starts with a Product Show at 5:00PM (NOH Chapter Board Meetings convene at that time also), and dinner follows at 6:00PM. Each Training Session/Joint Meeting and dinner will cost $24.00 per person (subject to change) payable at the door. Attendance at these State Certified Training Sessions will earn you Continuing Education Units (CEU s) for each session attended.

3 Happenings at the NOH Chapter May 2009 ASSE ASPE The joint training Session this month was presented by Chris Yarima, Applications Specialist III, Lab Water (pictured left), and Mike Kelly, Applications Specialist II, Lab Water (pictured right) from Millipore Corporation on the topic Basics of Water Purification. Chris was assisted by Mike in the Power Point Training Presentation, available on our web site, addressing the basics of Water Purification Systems for a Laboratory Facility. This topic covered uses by Academia, Pharmaceutical or Health Care facilities. Chris and Mike presented a very comprehensive and informative 40 minute Outline on: Contaminant's in Water. ( Types: Organic, Inorganic,Particles/Colloids, Micro Organisms) Pure Water Applications and Quality Standards (Type I, 2, and 3 -Ultra-Pure/Pure) Water Purification Techniques (Filtration,Distillation,Reverse Osmosis,Deionization,UV.) Key Water Purification System Design Steps (Requirements,Distribution, Make-up/Storage Tank(s), Review Specifications and Final Design) The program was very intense and encompassed too many items to be covered in this short training session review. It would behoove you to visit the complete Presentation as it appears in its entirety on our website. A copy of the training session material will be available later next week on the NOH Chapter website. A question and answer session followed the presentation. 4 Additional Happenings at the NOH Chapter May 2009 Additional Notations from the May 13, 2009 NOH Board Meeting During the informal Board meeting, President Pat Sugrue expressed a desire to create an Annual award from the Northern Ohio Chapter to someone, from our industry or organization, that has made a significant contribution to our principles and goals as an organization. The person who would be nominated and voted on by the NOH Board of Directors could be any active member, manufacturer s representative, plumbing Inspector, contractor, training session/presenter speaker, apprenticeship student, or associated trainer. Any other concerned and involved person who may be associated with our industry, and promotes the motto of Prevention Rather than Cure, could be eligible. Talks will continue on this idea, and be brought up at the Fall meeting sessions. Congratulations Cleveland Chapter of ASPE On your 35th Anniversary as a Local Chapter Mitch Clemente, Region 2 Director and former Cleveland Chapter of ASPE President presents a 35 year plaque to Mike Drab, current President, on the occasion of the Chapter s 35th Anniversary as a chartered Chapter in the American Society of Plumbing Engineers.
