Each Training Session starts with a Product Show at 5:00 PM. NOH Chapter Board Meetings convene at 5:00 PM also, and dinner follows at 6:00 PM. Each Training Session/Joint Meeting and dinner will cost $24.00 per person (subject to change) payable at the door. Attendance at these State Certified Training Sessions will earn you Continuing Education Units (CEU s) for A Message from your Northern Ohio President... March 23, 2012 Hello All, I hope you are all enjoying the SUMMER so far! It may feel like summer but we are still in spring and that means there are still a few meetings you can attend before our summer break. The next meeting will be on April 11th. The guest speaker will be from the State of Ohio presenting the changes that took place in the Ohio Plumbing Code. Some new codes and some codes that were removed in the past have made their way back. Also at this meeting the Chapter will be presenting the awards for the annual ASSE/CPI/Local 55 apprenticeship Contest that takes place every spring. Information and results of the winners is contained on page 8. inside this Newsletter. I encourage all of you to attend this informative and celebratory filled night. Another event that the Chapter had been involved with and was promoting and celebrating was the World Plumbing Day this past March 11th. There is a write-up on page 6. telling of the involvement the Chapter had for this event. We are also getting closer to offering the first Boy Scout Merit Badge in Plumbing, with the JATC of Plumbers Local 55 and the NOH Chapter. Plans are to have a workshop for about 20 area scouts that involve the importance of plumbing, drawings and some hands on experience based from the Plumbing Merit Badge. Volunteers for this event, which we hope to repeat throughout the year, are welcome. If interested please contact me or one of the Chapter Officers. Reimbursements Terry reported new checks invoice for new account was $23.95 and the NOHPE award was $ all approved Rich received a check for $85 for the World Plumbing Day awards for winner approved - last meeting 4. Committee Reports Golf Committee Dan, Chairman other committee members Terry, Joe, Rich and Bob (Photos) Dan is talking to ASPE. Asked for a list of Local 55 Contractors. Rich to sell raffle tickets and Bob taking pictures. Costs are going up $10 for each golfer and hole sponsorship. 5. Old Business Open House 2012 No report this meeting - Jason absent - at JATC Meeting Boy Scout Plumbing Merit Badge Rich reported that anyone that wants to be around or participate in this event must fill out the info required and submit to a background check Contact Jason for info. In Jason s absence, Rich asked for more help with this from the group. Terry reports that he is getting a lot of free hand outs for the scouts. Old Business (Continued) Terry reported on the Strawberry Festival/Health Fair We are all set to have a table for this event on Sunday, June 10th from 11:30 AM 2:30 PM at Parma South on Pearl Rd. All members are asked to show up and spend some time at the table to promote ASSE. This will be a great venue to let the public know what we are all about. We should feature our Scald Awareness White Papers on Shower Heads and Water Heater Temperature settings Schools and World Plumbing Day Rich presented at Brunswick schools again. NOH voted on winners. Article to appear in newsletter on page 6. Apprenticeship Contest Mon., March 12th The winners were announced and will receive prizes at next meeting in April. As part of the record we are giving two 3rd place prizes because of a tie. Jason to get profile pictures of winners to Bob for article in this newsletter. (See Page 8) 6. 4 NOH Chapter of ASSE / Cleveland Chapter of ASPE March 14, 2012 Joint Training Session/Meeting On March 14, 2012, approximately 40 members and guests from the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE and the Cleveland Chapter of ASPE were assembled for a Joint Training Session on PDI Certified Grease Interceptors presented by Mr. Dennis Foley, (shown above), Territory Manager for Green Turtle American Ltd. in Charlotte, NC. Dennis started by explaining what FOG (Fats-Oils-Grease) is and the types of interceptors and installations used in containing it from the sanitary and storm sewers. He explained Stokes Law and how water separates into layers of oil, clear water and sediment. He detailed the components of a properly designed separator: Ease of cleaning (Smooth walls - cleanout ports - proper venting-easy washdown-pump out) Performance (the ability to consistently remove to the allowable mandated pollutant levels). Discharge Compliance (Correctly sized interceptor) Best Maintenance practices (Operational Staff -keep grease and oil from sinks and drains). Consistent Maintenance Program (Monitor - remove pollution on a periodic basis for continuous efficient separator operation) The Power Point Presentation is available in PDF format on the NOH Web site listed below, and does a thorough job of explaining all the pertinent points above. 6 Additional Happenings at the Northern Ohio Chapter MARCH 2012 World Plumbing Day March 11, 2012 March 11, 2012: World Plumbing Day was celebrated throughout the Globe to recognize the efforts and achievements of Plumbers throughout the world who help protect our water supply to keep the population healthy and safe from waterborne pathogens and diseases. Third world emerging countries that have suffered the most from lack of clean water and sanitation are being trained and educated in the facts of clean potable drinking water. Rich Prospal, a member of the Board of the World Plumbing Council and the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE, presented his second year s effort to educate young school children in the local Brunswick, Ohio schools about the importance of clean water. He conducted talks to the elementary classes, grades 1 through 5, encouraging them to enter their posters for a contest illustrating the best theme ideas about World Plumbing Day and the date of the Annual event. See a list of the winners and their posters on the website Do your part and visit this site, in a couple of weeks, for an education on the good work the WPC is doing with these up and coming citizens of the world. Thanks for your efforts in this year s World Plumbing Day. ASSE/ASPE Annual Golf Outing August 2, 2012 The Annual ASSE/ASPE Golf Outing has been scheduled for August 2nd, 2012 at the Fowler s Mill Golf Club in Chesterland, Ohio. Details and Entry Forms will be included with future issues of the Newsletter, and on Pages 11 and 12 of this issue. It is not to early to start to promote this good time event by soliciting Foursomes, Hole Sponsors and Prize Donors. Dan Sugrue of EPS Supply will be heading up the effort for ASSE assisted by a committee from the NOH Chapter of ASSE. Contact Dan at to assist with the promotion. Greg Trombold of Trombold Equipment is the organizer for the Cleveland Chapter of ASPE, our partner in this joint Golf Outing. We provide 18 Holes of Golf, a cart, lunch, beverage, door prizes, and a fine steak dinner at the conclusion and awards ceremony. Prizes for longest drive, closest to the pin, and hole in one.

7 Additional Happenings at the Northern Ohio Chapter March 2012 Visiting Chinese Engineers Learn at the ASSE International Offices On Monday, February 13, 2012, Sara Marxen received an from The Oatey Company mentioning that they will have two engineers from China in Cleveland for about three days. The Oatey Company is a Sustaining Member of ASSE and for many years has been very active in the Northern Ohio Chapter. Sara, the ASSE Compliance Coordinator recently hired, came from The Oatey Company, a year ago. The two visitors from China Mr. Chen Guolong and Mr. Zheng Weiyi, both plastics application engineers; one with the government and the other with a fluoroplastics company wanted to learn about the following during a Wednesday morning visit to the ASSE office: Education on Industry Compliance (Standards Development, Testing Standards, Agencies, etc.) and US Plumbing Standards. Review of the manufacturing processes to ensure compliance. Review of Product Labeling requirements Review of Third Party Audit Processes With little time to prepare, Sara and Rich Prospal were able to put together a presentation on Codes & Standards from the recently completed Moen training classes. Since neither of these two engineers understood or spoke any English, they needed to simplify it as much as possible for the translator. It started out slow but about midway through the presentation a few questions arose and we entered into a full discussion and eventually abandoned the last part of the slides as questions went back and forth. I think the experience turned out well. Both Chen and Zheng took quite a few notes and were definitely interested in how Product Standards are developed in the U.S. Oatey s Mark Barilla, Vice President, Corporate Quality, Mfg. 8 ASSE Northern Ohio Chapter - Plumbers Local 55 UA CPI - Annual Apprentice Test March 12, 2012 On March 12, 2012, 51 First through Fifth year Apprentices were available to take the Annual Apprentice Contest Test sponsored by the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE, Local 55 UA Plumbers JATC, and the CPI at the Training Center shown below. They assembled at 4:30PM for Pizza and Pop before taking the 50 question (True and false-multiple choice questions) starting at 5:00 PM. The incentive for doing well on this test is a first prize of $300.00, second prize of $200.00, and a third prize of $ Each winning contestant also receives a free one year membership to the NOH Chapter of ASSE. They are also presented their awards at the April Meeting of the Chapter, where they receive their meal and a guests meal courtesy of the Chapter This year s winners were: First Place Tim Wheeler 4th Yr.. Apprentice $ (Gorman-Lavelle) Second Place Jeff Surella 4th Yr.. Apprentice $ (Soehnlen Piping) Third Place (Tied) Josh Ihlenfield 1st Yr.. Apprentice $ (E.B. Katz Co.) Jeff Kuchera 1st Yr.. Apprentice $ (Northern Ohio Plumbing) This was the first year in over 25 years that a tie had to be broken with a 51st question(tie-breaker). As luck would have it the tied 3rd Place contestants both answered that question correctly and a tie still existed. The Board of Directors from the NOH Chapter grading the tests agreed that they both should get the $ prize. Because the Apprentices had already left the JATC after taking the test, we were unable to get photos of the winners for this article. In the April issue of Connex-It, we will have a complete photo gallery of the Awards presentations (Cash and Certificates), and photos of the winners. This test is put together by Jason Shank, Training Director and President of the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE and his trainers from articles, codes, training curriculum, and ASSE Standards, in an effort to promote the Plumbing Industry in Cleveland and to encourage graduating Apprentices to join ASSE to further their knowledge and networking efforts in the Industry. 10 Additional Happenings at the Northern Ohio Chapter March 2012 The NOH Chapter of ASSE Awarded the Northern Ohio Pinnacle of Excellence Award (NOHPE) at the March 14, 2012 Meeting to Bob Tesar, FASSE / Life Member / ASSE Seal Control Board Member, and former Regional Director (6) and (8) A presentation of the NOHPE (Northern Ohio Pinnacle of Excellence) Award from the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE, was made to a very surprised 3rd Vice President and Editor of Connex-It at the joint ASSE / ASPE Training Meeting on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 by Mr. Rich Prospal, Region 6 Director and Board Member of the NOH Chapter. The tables were turned on Bob, as a Board member who had personally nominated another individual for this honor and this wonderful surprise award. The NOH Board managed to keep his nomination and eventual unanimous Board vote a secret by hiding the decision as a cover-up for the nominee Bob proposed. He had no knowledge of the switch in nominees, thus being totally surprised. This award was re-instituted as the NOHPE Award several years ago as the Chapter s way of acknowledging the service of a particular individual from our industry for support and furtherance of the ASSE motto Prevention Rather than Cure. Every year someone is nominated from the Plumbing Industry, be it a manufacturer, representative, tradesman, plumbing design engineer, ASSE /ASPE personnel, or someone in the plumbing training field for this prestigious award. Congratulations Bob, well deserved!
