Each Training Session starts with a Product Show at 5:00 PM. NOH Chapter Board Meetings convene at 5:00 PM also, and dinner follows at 6:00 PM. Each Training Session/Joint Meeting and dinner will cost $24.00 per person (subject to change) payable at the door. Attendance at these State Certified Training Sessions will earn you Continuing Education Units (CEU s) for each session attended. The Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE October 19, 2013 Hello to All, I hope this message finds everyone in good health and sprits. As I have mentioned before many times in these messages, the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE has been in partnership with Plumbers Local 55 Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee and the Cleveland Plumbing Industry in putting on Plumbing Merit Badge sessions for the area Boy Scouts for the past 2 years. By far the biggest accomplishment we as a group give to these Scouts and Leaders from these sessions is a different perspective of what modern Plumbers do and the training/certifications required to be a professional who Protects the Health of the Nation and takes seriously the responsibility of Prevention Rather Than Cure. The first question asked of the Scouts during these sessions is What is Plumbing or what does a Plumber do? As you might guess the answers that come up most often have to do with fixing the water closet, snaking/rodding a drain, fixing leaking pipes and of course the classic plumbers crack jokes. Throughout the whole eight hour session of the Merit Badge program, we start to explain and show how Plumbing has improved all of our lives in the areas of Potable Water, Sanitary/Storm Drainage, Natural Gas and the one that shocks them all - Medical Gases. At the end of the session, we all meet together as a group to review the day s events and information. I am surprised at how much these Scouts learned about Plumbing, but most important to me is that their perception of Plumbing and Plumbers has changed in a good way. The Scouts now realize and tell us the value Plumbing and Plumbers play in all of our lives from the time we our born to the time we leave. In a time when all you hear is this generation of kids doesn t care about much and only cares about playing video games, we can say at least they cared about Plumbing and played Plumber for that one day. Hopefully they will have memories as they grow of this one day, become the adult leaders of tomorrow and think of Plumbing/Plumbers when they get a drink of water or brush their teeth. Approved - Terry to write check for Tickets Motion made by Terry and Bob to pay back Local 55 JATC $ for the 5 Boy Scout sessions in Approved Terry reported that the employee ID number required by the IRS for the Chapter banking is in process buy slowed down by the Government shut down. This was required by the bank that the Chapter has a checking account with. 3. Reimbursements No reimbursements brought to the table 4. Committee Reports Jason reported on the Code Committee doings Bob reported and we reviewed his submission on the Gas Industry Liaison Report for the Annual Meeting. 5. Old Business Plumbing Merit Badge 2 completed Sessions -9/14 and 10/5 - All Scouts learned and enjoyed their experiences. Read a thank you card from one Scout. To do List: Jason and Rich to work on Presentation Find out who can attend and what they will be doing Jason to write up list and out. Give-aways - Tommy/Dana Temperature, Backflow coloring books, WPC/NOH/Local55 Stickers, CPI Hot Water Tank Stickers, 2 ASSE Scald Awareness Brochures Tom Wanner will try to get media coverage for the event Decided to continue doing BSA Merit Badge sessions for 2014 with partners from Local 55 and CPI Picking 3 dates for winter/spring Jason to mail out possible dates Reviewed and passed out contact information for the International Offices. Reviewed the NOH Chapter Report submitted by Jason for the Annual Meeting Reviewed the Chapter submission for the Dewey R. Dedrick Award Reviewed the new member list for the Chapter for Reviewed the proposed agenda for the Annual Meeting in California. 4 Results of Joint ASSE/ASPE Training Session on Fire-Stopping - Iron vs. Plastic Presented on October 9th, 2013 On October 9th, the 30 members and guests of Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE and the Cleveland Chapter of ASPE were presented a comprehensive Presentation on Fire Stopping by Steve Bennett, Regional Manager Engineering - Specification Team, McWane Plumbing Group, EST He proceeded with a Power Point presentation on all aspects of Fire Stopping in commercial applications such as Health Care Facilities, Hospitals and any building that requires a safe and secure environment where firewall penetrations are involved. We were unable to obtain a copy of the Power Point to post on our web site, due to proprietary restrictions. We were able to get an outline of the program the will show the pertinent points and questions involved when designing and installing a proper total Fire Stop System. 5 Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE / Plumbers Local 55 UA JATC / CPI Conducts two more Boy Scouts of America Plumbing Merit Badge Training Sessions October 5th and 12th, 2013 October 5th Group These two groups were the 9th and 10th groups of BSA troops that have been trained through this program taken on by the NOH Chapter, CPI and Plumbers from UA Local 55 JATC. Jason Shank is President of the NOH Chapter and the current Training Director of Plumbers Local 55 UA JATC. The first troop was trained in June of 2012 and the next groups followed in October and November of These are the third and fourth groups in 2013 that followed one in May 2013, one in September 2013, with one more group of Cub Scouts scheduled for October 26, The Cub Scout group will be accompanied by their parents and tentively a Girl Scout contingency will be given an abbreviated Session on The Importance of Plumbing Careers Associated with the Plumbing Industry. A planned tour of the JATC Facility along with demonstrations by apprentices, manufacturers and trainers featuring job skills in welding, brazing, pipe threading, and a virtual home piping system for visual training. A certified installer will explain the in-house Medical Gas Hospital Room Hook-up to show the extent of the Plumbers professionalism to install life-saving Medical Gas installations to our Hospitals. Training starts at 8:30 AM after a breakfast of donuts, pop, coffee and refreshments. A lunch of pizza was served at 12:00 noon after their morning classroom sessions, which included the basics on piping drawing layouts and blue print reading, pipe fitting descriptions and terminology. Lunch was followed by an afternoon of hands-on pipe cutting and threading, soldering copper joints and a session on service repair work on faucets, water heaters and toilets. All work in the shop was supervised by qualified UA Local 55 personnel, but the Scouts got into it first hand to earn their certificate and Plumbing Merit Badge. October 12th Group
