2 HFHNA is pleased to have three new Board members. Kendra will be assuming the role as Director and Chairperson of the Family Selection Committee with responsibilities for assuring that qualifications are satisfied and candidates are fully vetted as potential homeowners. Brittany is a welcome addition to our growing need for an IT Committee in these modern times. She will be working closely with Michelle Randrup who currently Chairs the IT Committee. Her assignments may include, but are not limited to, maintaining Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta s website and Facebook page. Barbara received her BS in Institute Technology from the University of Rochester and is currently pursuing her MBA at Columbia Southern. She works at Knology in Tech Support but her passion being a Chocolatier. We extend a hardy welcome to Barbara, Brittany and Kendra. Supporter Highlight Savannah River Nuclear Solutions has proven to be a valued supporter of, and contributor to Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta. One day last August a group HFHNA Board members were invited to tour the 310 square mile Savannah River Site. SRS has a long history at this location starting in the 1950 s when they began producing materials used in the manufacture of nuclear weapons. These included tritium and plutonium 239. Five reactors and support facilities were built to produce these nuclear materials contributing to the nations defenses throughout the cold war era. Between 1953 and 1988, SRS produced about 36 metric tons of plutonium. The nearly 40,000 people who worked at the site at its peak all contributed to the U.S and its allies winning the cold war. Currently, there remains close to 10,000 employees on site today working to decontaminate all legacy waste. As a condition of a non-proliferation treaty with Russia (USSR), all five reactors have been decommissioned never to restart again. One reactor was totally dismantled and decontaminated while the others are currently used for training purposes and storage. Aside from the ongoing work for D.O.E, the site has been designated a National Environmental Research Park in The Applied Research Center and Savannah River Ecology Laboratory is a joint research facility with University of Georgia. We who toured the site are grateful for the opportunity and are extremely thankful for Savannah River Nuclear Solutions continued support of Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta. Dorie King BELVEDERE, S.C. - Dorie King, 72, of Belvedere, SC, entered into rest on August 24, 2016, while under hospice care for liver cancer. She was born on October 11, 1943, in Union Point, GA to Otis and Lovonia (Green) Byrd. Dorie grew up in Harlem, GA and graduated from Spartanburg. Mrs. King has been a well-loved member of her community for the past 45 years. She enjoyed serving in the children's bus ministry, the senior citizen outreach, and building homes with Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta. Dorie will be missed by those whose lives she touched at Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta. Newsletter 2
