Box 2571 Columbus, OH Chapters are not authorized to speak for the Society November 2015 VP Technical Tony Furst I have been sent off to the land of big green farm machinery for the next several months to bring a large combination steam and hydronic energy center on-line. During my absence the other Board members have graciously stepped up to the plate and will be helping me with my duties. Our November speaker will be Mr. Wes Salisbury from Intellihot. Wes s presentation will cover the current state of volume water heating in commercial applications, and how tankless technology can be a viable solution. He will cover the reasons why boiler and storage tanks are no longer the best, most efficient solution. He will also cover the pitfalls associated with tankless technology and how some products on the market are better able to handle the demands of commercial use. Sizing and application examples will also be included. We Salisbury is the Northeast Regional Technical Sales Support Specialist with Intellihot Green Technologies. Wes got his start in the industry back in t2011 working in a product support role for a manufacturer of a complete line of HVAC equipment. He then moved into product technical training and field support, which continue to be his specialties. Wes has also spent time as a Facilities Director for a skilled nursing facility. 3 VP Legislative Bill Deardurff Here are some highlights from the ASPE Pipeline: PERC releases Phase 2 of its drainline carry study The Plumbing Efficiency Research Coalition (PERC), of which ASPE is a member, recently published The Drainline Transport of Solid Waste in Buildings-Phase 2.0, which is available on PERC s website. 5 VP Membership Jason Plageman We are in the middle of college football season and hopefully your team is having a great year. Many of the coaches out there can contribute their level success to the efforts put in during the recruiting season. Now by no means am I an Urban Myer so we have come up with an incentive program for the next twenty NEW members to help me with recruiting. As mentioned at the last technical meeting we will enter the next twenty NEW members who sign up before June of 2016 into a raffle. The lucky winner will receive 1 paid registration fee for the 2016 ASPE convention in Phoenix, AZ. This is limited to NEW members only. Any previous members are not eligible. This is all in an effort to reach our goal of 100 members by October, We would like to show up in Phoenix as the largest chapter in our region. With a strong recruiting effort we will be successful. 8 Region 2 Affiliate Liaison - Dann Holmes Region 2 Affiliate Liaison Report October was a very busy month for the plumbing industry. The weather was perfect in St. Louis, MO during the ASPE Technical Symposium. The technical sessions offered valuable information, educational enhancements, and countless opportunities to network with our peers. Taking advantage of the interaction with fellow ASPE members from around the county, I looked for better ways to increase my effectiveness as your Region 2 Affiliate Liaison. Some of these ideas are being considered. I will let you know in a future article if any of them develop into action items. The Plastics Pipe Institute (PPI) held their fall conference in Nashville, TN. To help our engineering community, they recently released a new, FREE, online software tool that aids in designing plastic pressure pipe systems using PEX, PE-RT, and CPVC. The PPI Plastic Pipe Design Calculator was developed by the PPI association s Building and Construction Division (BCD). You can download the calculator at building-construction/bc-pipe-calculator.html. While you are visiting the PPI website, be sure to read about this year s Annual Award Winners. Consider working with your local factory or rep agency on a plastic pipe project you have and consider submitting it for next year s competition. PPI also announced they are reaching out to PVC manufacturers, and vice-versa, to help find common ground within the plastic pipe industry. This could mean huge changes in the future, all for the good. Keep an eye and ear on these developments. Plumbing Manufacturer s International (PMI) held their fall conference at the Riverwalk in San Antonio, TX during October too. This is a great networking event with many of the key people within the industry including companies like Kohler, Delta, Symmons, Chase Brass, IAPMO, ICC, Moen; I could go on and on. The important thing is some of the topics and speakers presenting there. Dr. Marc Edwards from Virginia Tech gave a wonderful, in-depth presentation on Legionella and where our industry needs to be looking going forward. Dr. Paul Struman from Montana State University followed with his presentation on his work involving Biofilm. Dr. Struman had numerous videos imbedded in his presentation showing the reaction and movement biofilm plays within a piping systems. Unfortunately, the City of Flint, MI took a bad rap during the entire conference. Yes, Flint has recently been in the national news media for the detection of lead in their municipal water distribution system. This is not acceptable, PERIOD but as industry professionals, we should have never let it get to that point. We will see how the politicians and the water purveyors resolve their differences going forward. Finally, if you were not aware, October also brought us the IAPMO and ICC code hearings. Safe to say, we do not have many months out of the year with so many important plumbing industry events.
