So far it s been pretty mild with very little snow. Hopefully that trend will continue thru Spring! Valentine s Day is almost here. Don t forget to send those flowers, box of chocolate or that special gift to your significant other! Happy Valentine s Day everybody! Some Society news: Registration for the 2016 Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD) exam is now open. The exam will be held on March 31, 2016 and April 1, Register for the exam at aspe.org/cpd. ASPE is offering a revised four-part CPD Review Webinar Series which you can view at your leisure. If you purchase the entire series by March 11, 2016, you will receive the 2015 CPD Review Manual for free. The CPD Review Manual is now available for download and in print version at ASPE S online store. This is a revised and updated version of the study guide. Only the print version will be allowed into the testing center on exam day. Anybody who would like to run for the ASPE Board of Directors applications are now being accepted and are due May 31, Go to aspe.org to find the application form. 5 VP Technical Tony Furst The groundhog says we are going to have an early spring however from my perspective I m not sure we ve really had much of a winter this year. I m not complaining as I am not a fan of winter so an early spring is wonderful news to me. This month our program is going to be a bit different than normal in that we have four speakers from Columbia Gas coming in to talk about the interactions between Columbia Gas and the engineering and construction communities. Some of the topics they will be covering will be compliance issues, fuel gas code and new and existing service with Columbia Gas. Because we have four speakers from Columbia that all have very diverse backgrounds within the Columbia system come prepared with lots of questions as we have designed this presentation to be very interactive and more of a Q & A type panel discussion rather than a formal presentation. Our speakers from Columbia Gas are: Joe Codispoti, New Business Development Manager specializing in new subdivision home construction, new and conversion commercial and industrial customers for Columbia Gas of Ohio. Prior to becoming a Development Manager, Joe had three years in the role of National Accounts Manager working with plumbers and independent contractors across NiSource s gas distribution footprint consisting of six states, focusing on the Trade Ally Program and Marketing. Rob Smith, Field Service & National Fuel Gas Code subject matter expert, is the Operations Compliance Manager for Columbia Gas and a NiSource Corporate Services Employee. Prior to becoming an Operations Compliance Manager, Rob has 21 years experience in the gas industry as a Technical Trainer, Service Technician, Operations Training Specialist, Compliance Specialist, Field Operations Leader and HVAC installer. Rose M Pusecker, a subject matter expert in regards to Field Service and National Fuel Gas Code application, is the Leader for the Technical Training Department for Ohio and Kentucky at Columbia Gas of Ohio, Inc. and NiSource. Prior to becoming a Leader, Rose had 28 years experience in gas industry as a Technical Trainer, Service Technician, Operations Specialist, Resource Planning and Customer Service. Donna Young, New Business Development Manager specializing in new subdivision home construction, new and conversion commercial and industrial customers for Columbia Gas of Ohio. (Central Ohio and Western central Ohio) Donna has 35 years with Columbia Gas in the areas of engineering, marketing, new business, operations and training. The upcoming program year looks to be an exciting one and I hope that everyone is enjoying the variety of technical topics we are covering. Anyone who would like to be considered go to aspe.org/callforpresenters by February 1, 2016 to submit your presentation. Some Chapter news: As I explained at the last meeting, we lost the first round in the Society s Membership Challenge. We are now in the Consolation Bracket Challenge and are competing against the Phoenix Chapter. Anybody who knows anybody who would like to join or could be convinced to join please let Jason know! We are considering having a sporting clays shoot at Blackwing in October. The outing would be an all-day event which would include lunch, shooting the course in the afternoon and some side games. The Board would like to get your feedback to find out if this is something that the members would be interested in attending and if the manufacturer s representatives would be interested in sponsoring. 8 Region 2 Affiliate Liaison - Dann Holmes Region 2 Affiliate Liaison Report Having just returned from the 2016 AHR Expo in Orlando, FL, one wonders how many industry professionals attended this annual event and what is the state of the HVAC/R industry. Although the official numbers are not available at the time of this writing, early indications show this to be the largest AHR Expo ever in the southeast. Preregistration stood at 32,509. The last time the show was in Orlando the figure was around 28,000. Keep in mind, weather along the northeastern corridor caused many flight delays and cancellations. AHR is claiming 60,000 eventually walked the exhibit floor. If this is correct, then this rivals expos held in Chicago and suggests the health of HVAC/R industry is quite good. Exhibitors of all types were there. Legend introduced their new HyperPure PE-RT tubing available in sizes up to 2. Dow Chemical was in their booth as part of this historic market launch. This new product carries a listing for hot and cold potable water use and as an added bonus, manufactured in the USA. Uponor displayed their new 3 PEX along with the Milwaukee expansion tool specially designed to work with their joining method. It should be noted, this too is manufactured in the USA. Victaulic was certainly proud to talk about their new coupling designed to handle steam applications up to 150psi. The groove is set further back than you might be accustomed too so be sure to contact your local representative for additional information. Aquatechnik NA now has their certification listings for their PP-RCT fusion piping system. You can be sure you will be hearing much more about this product in the future. In fact, Plumbing Contractor Magazine recently wrote a story about this in their November 2015 issue. Trust me when I say there were many more innovative products on display but I do not have enough space in our newsletters to give manufacturers and the ASHRAE educational seminars their just deserve. I would like to improve on this in the future. It was a pleasure seeing Billy Smith, Executive Director/CEO of ASPE along with Brian Henry, Director of Affiliate Relations at ASPE working the show floor. You can image Brian was pulling out all the stops seeking corporate sponsors for the 2016 ASPE Convention and Expo in Phoenix, AZ in late October. Certification bodies were well represented too including the CSA Group, Intertek, ICC-ES, TUV SUD America, IAPMO, Radiant Professionals Alliance, UL LLC, and NSF International. Start planning today to attend both the 2016 ASPE Convention and Expo in Phoenix from October 28 to November as well as the 2017 AHR Expo in Las Vegas from January 30 to February 1.
