2018 Gubernatorial Election Judge Changes: NEW Voting Operations Judge (VOP): We have created the Voting Operations Judge (VOP) position. The VOP will be trained to carry out all of the duties associated with each of the functional areas in a polling place. VOP training includes Check-In, Ballot Issuance, Line Management, Escort and Voting Area. We will no longer have separate types of election judges for each of these duties. While Chief Judges may use VOP Judges in any of the functional areas of the polling place, VOP Judges are expected to rotate through each of the positions periodically throughout Election Day. Provisional Judges: Provisional Judges will now attend two training classes. Both classes are mandatory and trainees will receive $25 for each class. Provisional Judges will learn to use the epollbook and manage the provisional voting process. Only Provisional Judges will check-in provisional voters. Chief Judges will still verify the provisional reason code and initial the Voter Authority Card (VAC). When the Provisional Judge is not helping a provisional voter, they will assist with regular check-in. Chief Judges: Chief Judges will also attend two training classes: the Chief Judge class and the Voting Operations class. Both classes are mandatory and trainees will receive $25 for each class. Text Notifications: In order to streamline our communication process, we will be sending text message reminders to your cellphone. Please expect text message reminders for training class dates and times, important election dates and other updates as necessary. We are looking for experienced Election Judges to become Chief Judges. If you have strong communication and organizational skills, attention to detail and care about fair and impartial elections, please consider becoming a Chief Judge. By having diligent and experienced people in the Chief Judge position, the Election Day process will flow smoothly for both Election Judges and voters. 2
Reminder: Hands-On Training Scheduling Hands-on training for the Gubernatorial Election cycle is required for all Election Judges, regardless of whether they worked in previous elections. We will contact you soon to schedule your training class. Training classes begin the week of March 26th! Class Format Election Judge Training for the 2018 Gubernatorial Training will have a new format! All Election Judges The Election Judge training class is a combination of lecture and hands-on practice to prepare new judges and returning judges for the Gubernatorial Elections. You will receive instruction on the procedures and responsibilities of the polling place team and the specific positions. You will work individually and in groups to complete practice exercises, forms, and to role play with the voting equipment, including setting up and closing a polling place. We will be combining the Check-In, Ballot Area, Line Management and Voting Area functions into a new position called a Voting Operations Judge (VOP). The VOP Judges will be trained in all aspects of polling place operations by rotating through each area in the three hour class. Chief Judges Chief Judges must attend the Chief Judge Training Class and the VOP Class. Provisional Judges The Provisional Judges must attend two provisional training sessions: Provisional Class One and Provisional Class Two. We will train the Provisional Judges to Check-In Provisional Voters. Provisional Class One will focus on the provisional process and Provisional Class Two will focus on the check-in process. The Provisional Area will move to the end of the Check-In Area to easily facilitate the provisional voter process. The two classes do not have to be taken in order. We have broken the class into Part One and Part Two to make sure everyone receives the same training and understands their duties! 3

Behind the scenes of Voter Registration: We would like to introduce our Voter Registration team! They are the people who make sure you are registered and able to vote. If you have moved and notify the Anne Arundel Board of Elections, they update your information in our system. The Voter Registration Department enters all of the information that populates the electronic pollbook. They work hard to make sure the check-in process works smoothly for voters and election judges. Voter Registration: Shekia Harding-Bey: Hi, I started working at the Anne Arundel County Board of Elections in 2012 in the Voter Registration Department. I enjoy working with a good team of people that go above and beyond to ensure that Elections run successfully. I am looking forward to a very successful Gubernatorial Election this year! Kate Scott: I am a 40 year Board of Elections veteran; I started working for the State Board of Elections (SBE) as a temporary employee in 1978 in Finance, with the campaign finance reports. I spent the next three years between SBE and Anne Arundel County. I became a permanent employee at SBE in 1983 and transferred to the Anne Arundel County Board of Election permanently in What I miss most about our new business practice is the customer interaction. Most paper work is completed online now, so not everyone needs to come in to the office anymore, but we always have a few customers that like to drop off their paperwork inperson, those few have already found us in our new building and the foot traffic will always pick up in an election year. 6
Voter Registration: Deborah Hill-Floyd: I have a long history with the Board of Elections, starting in the Absentee department as a temporary employee, and became a full-time State employee. I found myself moving to the Anne Arundel County Warehouse as a supervisor. I then moved to the Election Judge Department, and the Change Department. I spent a few years in the Department of Human Resources, Campaign Finance, and Purchasing. I have assisted with various duties in other departments through the years before joining the Voter's Registration Department. We are a strong group. We pull our collective knowledge to answer any question that may pop up throughout the Board of Elections. Kijuana Watkins: Hi... I started working for the Board of Elections in October 2017 in the Voter Registration Department. The Board of Elections welcomed me right-away making me feel comfortable. I was amazed learning all that each department must do to prepare and a Election. I never realized it was so much preparation for " Voting." I'm very excited, and looking forward the Gubernatorial Election this year. 7
Voter Registration: Linda Miller: I began working for the Board of Elections in March, 2016 for the Voter Registration Department and became a State Employee in August, I have found it fascinating to learn exactly what goes into running a smooth election. I am continually impressed with the knowledge and organization skills of our staff. I enjoy coming to work every day and interacting with my coworkers, who are a diverse and interesting group of people. The 2016 election was exciting and I am looking forward to contributing to the success of this year s gubernatorial election. New Office Associates Temple Stokes: Assignment Coordinator for District 1. Hello all, I interviewed with the Anne Arundel County Board of Election in December after I graduated with my Master s Degree in Human Service Administration. I ve always wanted to learn what goes on behind the scenes in the voting process. Learning how we can attract more young judges to be part of the process is also one of my goals. I m looking forward to growing with the Board Of Elections for many years to come. This is a great team to be part of and I am grateful for the opportunity. I am here to help so feel free to reach out to me at any time. 8
New Office Associates Amanda Barchanowicz: Assignment Coordinator for District 2. I started working as an election judge several years ago because I have always been interested in the election process. I was so impressed with the integrity of the system that I knew I wanted to become part of the team. Now, I am happy to be with the Anne Arundel County Board of Elections full time in my capacity within the election judge worker department. I am looking forward to a very busy election year! Pat Avanzato: Assignment Coordinator for District 3. I first started working for the Board of elections during the 2014 Gubernatorial Election. I was assigned to the warehouse. For 2018 I am working in the Election Workers Department and am looking forward to learning a whole new skill set on the recruitment and assignment of election judges. 9
New Office Associates Zainab Barrie: Assignment Coordinator for District 4. Hello! I wanted to work for the Board of Elections because I have always wondered what the process was like to run an election. I would like to learn the ins and outs of the entire election process and what it takes to run an election smoothly. I am looking forward to working this years Gubernatorial Election. Heather Corley: Assignment Coordinator for District 5. Hello everyone! I just started in January 2018 in the Election Workers Department. I am very excited for the upcoming elections and to be part of the team. We have some great people and new processes for the 2018 Elections. I look forward to learning the behind the scenes aspect of the Elections and working with everyone at The Board of Elections. 10
New Office Associates Susan Languirand: Assignment Coordinator for District 6. I started working for the Board of Election in early December and have found that I am a good fit for the Election Workers team. I have learned so much in the short time that I have been here already and I believe I have added to The Board of Elections with my work ethic, and willingness to learn and taking on big projects. This is going to be a great Election year I m looking forward to working with the election judges. Francisco Morales: Assignment Coordinator for District 7. I just started working for the Anne Arundel Board of Elections in February as a Temporary Office Assistant. I think I will be a great asset to this team.
