To recertify and keep your CPDT status, submit your recertification application online by October 31, The 2016 ASPE Convention and Exposition will be held in Phoenix, AZ on October 28 November 2. Registration will open in May at ( expo). There is a tool kit on the ASPE web site to help in planning your attendance to the show cost-effectively. There is also a new video on YouTube featuring Executive Director/CEO Billy Smith, FASPE. Start now on arranging your schedule to be able to attend. 4 VP Technical Tony Furst Our presentation for this month will be on the design and application of flammable and corrosive lab gas distribution systems. The presentation will cover the materials of construction, what special considerations must be given to material and equipment selections. Mr. Kevin Coyne with CONCOA, he is the technical applications representative here in the Central Ohio marketplace. The upcoming program year looks to be an exciting one and I hope that everyone is enjoying the variety of technical topics we are covering. Our panel will consist of individuals from both the mechanical contracting and the consulting industries. 6 VP Legislative Bill Deardurff At the MCACO Joint meeting Jack Soma, Chief Plumbing Inspector for Ohio, gave his typical entertaining and educational talk about code changes. He said the (Ohio) Board of Building Standards is working toward a complete update of the building codes (including the plumbing code). The goal is an effective date of January 1, 2017, however, it might be delayed until July 1, The Board of Building Standards has recently adopted amendments to the Ohio Building Code effective October 10, 2016 (DIC fees) and January 1, 2017 (IECC and ASHRAE 90.1 standards updates) and to the Ohio Plumbing Code (Section 312) effective October 10, The final adopted rules with summaries can be found at the following links: Ohio Building Code Rules: dico_ohiobuildingcodeamendmentsch11335eff Oct102016Jan12017.pdf same with new material, such work shall be considered as new work 4101: and an approval shall be obtained and inspection made as provided in this code. 2. The clearance of stoppages or the repair of leaks in pipes, valves or fixtures, and the removal and reinstallation of water closets, provided such repairs do not involve or require the replacement or rearrangement of valves, pipes or fixtures. Plumbing Code Summary: Only chapter 3 is affected, to clarify plumbing system testing requirements. Specifically, Testing plastic pipe with compressed air is prohibited. A vacuum testing procedure is available for most situations. Although some Society Board members are running unopposed, there are a few positions that have multiple choices. Take the time to read all the nomination submittals. You are sure to learn valuable information about each nominee that you may not have known before. As your Region 2 Affiliate Liaison for ASPE, I have so many topics to consider for articles. Unfortunately, there is so little time and newsletter space to cover all the topics I believe you would find interesting. This month I will focus on our upcoming Convention and Expo. Pre-Convention If you care to add the Green Plumbing Design (GPD) designation to your list of accomplishments, ASPE is holding a two day workshop on October 27 & 28. To qualify, you must have a CPD or PE registration. There will be a 50- question exam following the workshop to test your knowledge. Good luck. The Women of ASPE (WOA) Committee Meeting and Leadership Forum will take place on Friday, October 28. This event will bring the women of ASPE together and along with your plumbing peers, give you an opportunity to network, learn, and earn CEU s. This sounds like a great new event. The Convention Two of the most important events during the convention will be changes submitted to our bylaws and electing our incoming society board members. Your chapter delegates tasked with casting votes up or down on amendments will affect the way Society operates. Words have meanings so be sure to review and choose them carefully. You need to be involved with the changes proposed and make your suggestions known. Give your delegates a strong message to take The Expo The Expo will begin right after our keynote speaker Steve Garvey enlightens our members. Expect nothing less than a compelling message that you can share with your family, friends, and colleagues when you return home. ASPE will be hosting several guided tours during the expo. Be sure to consider these. I signed up for five. How about Social media, do you know all there is to know? You can learn more about this technology by visiting the ASPE Social Media Lounge to get valuable tips. Be sure to download the ASPE app before getting to Phoenix. Search ASPE 2016 on either itunes or Google Play. Make sure you click on the right one. ASPE will host the New Product Innovation Theater in the ASPE Pavilion (booth 737). Manufactures will give demonstrations and answer questions on their latest products and methods entering the plumbing industry.
