1 Austin Chapter, CSI January 2013 The Construction Specifications Institute NFPS 285 Exterior Wall Fire Testing Design and Compliance - 1 AIA HSW LU This course explains the NFPA 285 test method, its origin, its procedures, when it is required, and design considerations necessary to comply with it. The course explains the fire/life safety objective of NFPA 285. Selected sections of the International Building Code are reviewed to identify the types of construction and circumstances that require NFPA 285 compliance. The criteria in ASHRAE 90.1 for continuous insulation and air/water resistive barriers are reviewed and identified as contributors to the rise of NFPA 285 requirements. To understand the key wall assembly layers that determine compliance, the course reviews insulation, air/water resistive barriers, and exterior cladding options. Design practices will be improved by familiarizing attendees with information sources such as manufacturer design guides, engineering analysis and the public database discussion. Roy Schauffele, FCSI, CCPR, LEED Green Associate Monday, January 21, 2013 NETWORKING 11:30 Lunch and Program 12:00 Texas Land and Cattle, 1101 S Mopac, Austin, TX Reservations are now made through the Evite web-based system. 2 President s Message David C. Loveless, CSI I hope everyone had a restful and happy holiday season. As we move into the new year, I would like to update the Chapter on a few items. The Board has completed the revision of the Chapter Bylaws and submitted the changes/ updates to the Institute for review and approval. The changes required were a result of a 2011 Institute vote to change to the classification of membership. CSI members approved an amendment to CSI s Bylaws that combined the former Associate, Industry, and Professional members into a single class of members. As a result, Bylaws provisions based on these old member classifications are no longer valid. The changes were submitted on January 3, The Institute will be forging forward with its brand revitalization program. Starting January 1st, CSI will begin to use a new logo and tagline. The National Board of Directors approved the logo and tagline this past fall. The selection was the culmination of months of work by the CSI Brand Revitalization Task Team (BRTT). The BRTT's goal is to ensure the story we tell as an organization reflects the "CSI experience" our members and customers actually have when they interact with CSI. The logo and tagline are an important component of the project because they're the label we put on the experience we are creating. CSI leaders are critical to revitalizing CSI's brand. They create the CSI experience for thousands of members and potential members. The events they hold, newsletters they send, and presentations they deliver give CSI's logo and tagline meaning. Our brand story is centered on CSI's mission, and three key messaging points that flow from it: Mission: To advance building information management and education of project teams to improve facility performance. Messaging Points: As an organization we are evolving to meet the needs of a changing building design and construction industry. We connect all members of the building team to the information they need to effectively communicate and improve project delivery. We're the only community where you can network and collaborate with building experts across the design, building materials and construction disciplines. Pins and medals will retain the existing shield shape. Most existing pins and medals are based on the original CSI logo rather than the most current one, and this tie to CSI's history will be maintained.

3 President s Message Continued CSI national plans to provide new podium banners to chapters at no cost by March CSI National will provide a new certificate/ award template on-line and make paper stock available to chapters at no cost by March Chapters will remain free to use their own certificate/ award stock design. The legal name of the organization is not changing and no bylaws updates are required. CSI national will begin using the new logo and tagline beginning January Chapters are encouraged to make the switch during CSI microsite templates will switch to the new logo and tagline in January In January, visit for: ο Color and black/white versions of the logo in formats including EPS, JPEG, and GIF. ο A written guide to using the logo and tagline. RBG, Hexadecimal, and Pantone colors and font information As a leader of our local Chapter, I am encouraged by the national organizations realization that for continued growth and position in the market place, some changes are needed. While still honoring the past, I would like to encourage all members to take advantage of these changes and help grow our local Chapter. As a group, we share vast experience and knowledge but we are weak in what I would call youth. Please take every opportunity to bring additional people to our meetings/ seminar lunches. If you know someone who you think is interested, please feel free to contact me or our membership director Cory Ferris. I know both of us would be more than willing to reach out to these individuals and help make them feel and connect them to the Chapter. David C. Loveless President, Austin CSI Chapter
