September 27, 2011 I hope everyone had a nice summer now that fall is here. One can always tell it fall because of the recent annual ASPE/ASSE Clam bake. This event is always a great kick off for ASSE and ASPE. It gives a chance for members with their families to catch up with each other, enjoy some good food and talk some business for the upcoming year. I would encourage you and your families to attend the next clam bake if you have not before. Please review the pictures in this newsletter taken by Bob Tesar. Jason Shank President Of the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE The Chapter was also busy all summer with the planning and soliciting hole and door prize sponsors for our Annual Golf Outing which was held in August at Fowlers Mill Golf Club in Chardon, Ohio We also put a lot of work into organizing and helping to set up a Trade Show/ Open House that took place on Sept. 21st at Plumbers Local 55 Training Center. The partners for this show where ASSE, ASPE, Local 55 and CPI. We had about 30 Vendors, live demonstrations of plumbing installations and plumbing systems mock-ups. A big thank you to the United Association for providing their demo trailers that were set up in the parking lot for inspection and training Although attendance was not what we hoped for because of the rainy weather that persisted, we look at this as a starting point and building block to bigger and better shows in the future I would like to thank everyone for their help and ideas for this event. I would like to congratulate Rich Prospal from the NOH Chapter for being re- elected to the Executive Board of the World Plumbing Council at the Board Meeting In Edinburgh, Scotland on September 7, I know he will continue to do an excellent job in that position. Lastly, being that this is the start of the new year for Chapter meetings, I would like to see you all at the upcoming meeting on Oct. 12. An Organization is only as strong as its membership participation. Hope to see you there. 4 The Plumbing Industry of Cleveland presented a Joint Open House and Exhibition Trade Show on September 21, PM to 6 PM Plumbers UA Local 55 JATC Center, 980 Keynote Circle, Brooklyn Heights, Ohio Sponsored by: On a drizzly Wednesday afternoon on September 21st., The Cleveland Plumbing Industry under the guidance of Tom Wanner of CPI, Bill Armstrong, Business Manager for UA Plumbers Local 55, and Jason Shank, Training Director of UA Plumbers Local 55 JATC presented at joint Open House and Exhibition at the Training Center pictured below. The Exhibition was also sponsored by the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE of which Jason Shank is the current President, and the Cleveland Chapter of ASPE, lead by Keith Bush, President. From 2 PM to 6 Pm, more than a hundred guests, contractors, wholesalers, and manufacturers representatives braved the rainy weather to register for this event. This is a rebirth of the Trade Shows that were discontinued in the 90 s because of hard times and lack of attendance. ASSE and ASPE jointly held these types of shows to promote the industry, but discontinued them because of lack of support by the manufacturers at that time. Those who attended this event were shown the latest technology in the Plumbing Industry along with demos and practical training applications by the apprentices in the JATC center. Free light snacks and refreshments were availble to the guests and participants throughout the Open House A complete photo gallery of the event is shown on page 5 &6 below:

7 Additional Happenings at the Northern Ohio Chapter in the month of September 2011 FOR RELEASE: Sept CONTACT: Ken Van Wagnen, ASSE Administrative Manager , Richard J. Prospal, ASSE International Past President, Re-elected to World Plumbing Council Executive Board Edinburgh, Scotland, Sept. 22, 2011 On Sept. 7, 2011, Richard J. Prospal, International Past President of the American Society of Sanitary Engineering (ASSE), was re-elected to serve on the World Plumbing Council s (WPC) Executive Board. This election took place at the conclusion of WPC s business meeting, the opening event of the 9th Triennial Conference, held Sept. 7-11, 2011 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Prospal s first term on the WPC Executive Board began in 2009 when he was elected, by postal ballot among Full Members, to fill a vacancy on the Board. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the WPC has over 100 member organizations from more than 24 countries. The mission of the WPC is to unite the world plumbing industry and promote the role of plumbing in improving public health and safeguarding the environment. Prospal has over 45 years of experience in the plumbing and mechanical field. His career began in 1964 as a plumber apprentice with Local Union #55 in Cleveland, Ohio. Throughout his professional career, he worked as a plumber, estimator, project manager and contractor for Reliance Mechanical Corp., a company that has worked on some of the largest projects in Northern Ohio and averaged over $100 million in sales during his last 10 years of employment. Prospal retired as Vice President of Plumbing Operations in Prospal has been a member ASSE since 1981 and has served on several committees, including the ASSE Product Standards Committee (past Chairman), the ASSE Scholarship Committee (founding and current Chairman) and the ASSE Scald Awareness Task Group (current Chairman). In 2009, he served as the Society s International President. Prospal has delivered numerous presentations and has published many articles and papers, including the WPC s Environmental Aspects of Plumbing, which he co-authored with Blane Judd (UK). The WPC Executive Board is chaired by GP Russ Chaney (USA), CEO of The IAPMO Group. Joining Chaney and Prospal on the Executive Board are: Deputy Chairman Sudhakaran Nair (India), Honorary Secretary/Treasurer Hans Tiedemann (Canada) and Directors Hua Mingjiu (China), Elmar Esser (Germany) and Shayne La Combre (Australia). Being elected as a Director of the World Plumbing Council is a tremendous honor for me and for ASSE, said Prospal. To be an active part of such a prestigious group and have the ability to bring the ideals and principles of our motto, Prevention Rather Than Cure, to the entire worlds plumbing community is simply awesome. The goals of the two organizations are very similar; to protect the health of the world and to spread the word of the importance of good plumbing practices. About the American Society of Sanitary Engineering ASSE is an ANSI Accredited standards developer and certification body that is comprised of individual and sustaining members who represent all disciplines of the plumbing industry. Its mission is to continually improve the performance, reliability and safety of plumbing systems. ASSE s product performance standards, professional qualifications standards, professional certification and product listing programs are developed in the interest of public health and the society s motto: Prevention Rather Than Cure.
