November 26, 2012 Hello to All, I hope this message finds you all doing well and completely ready for the fast approaching Holidays! It is hard to believe the end of the year is only a few weeks away. I attended the ASSE Annual Meetings a couple of weeks ago along with 5 or 6 other Northern Ohio Chapter members. As always the Annual Meeting was packed full of meetings that are such a vital part of the Society and it is my understanding that about 120 ASSE members were in attendance this year. These meetings not only serve as a recap of the past year s activities but also set the agendas for the upcoming year. Please review my brief report to the Chapter of all of the meetings and events that took place this year. The complete report is shown on page 4. of this issue. By far the most important issue that took place at the Annual Meeting was the approval, by ASSE members, of the sale of ASSE to IAMPO. There was a lot of information presented about this vote and what it would mean for ASSE going forward. I felt everyone was given a fair chance to speak their opinions and ask their questions concerning this issue, and at the end a vote was called for and the sale of ASSE was approved by a majority vote to IAMPO. ASSE will now be a National Chapter of IAMPO and from my understanding will operate as it has always had. The Local Chapters such as ours will remain unchanged and were not part of this vote. Where does this all go from here? I am sure there will be some bumps in the road for the upcoming year but it is in my opinion the best road for ASSE to take for the future. Only time will tell but I encourage all of us to move forward with this plan and help ASSE to advance its long held motto from 1906 Prevention Rather Than Cure. 7 Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE and Plumbers Local 55 UA JATC Conducts their Fourth Boy Scouts of America Plumbing Merit Badge Training Session On Saturday November 3rd, 17- Boy Scouts and their Troop Leaders from Troop 153 (North Ridgeville); Troop 610 (Brookpark); Troop 319 (Brooklyn) and Troop 159 (Bay Village) assembled for an all-day session to obtain their Plumbing Merit Badge. Training and certification was administered by the NOH Chapter of ASSE and UA Local 55 Plumbers at the JATC Training Facility in Brooklyn, Hts., Ohio. After an 8:00 AM breakfast start of donuts and refreshments, the Troop was given a series of Power Point sessions on the history of Plumbing, current and old practices for potable water, toilets, sinks, etc. Also included was a session on CAD drawings of simple piping systems for an average home. The Scouts were taught how to use a scale and ruler to draw up a piping layout they would later construct in the shop. They learned about the typesof fittings, copper, black malleable gas fittings, nipples, and PVC drainage fittings. After a lunch break, the group was sent out to the shop where the Training Instructors from Local 55 JATC put them through the rigors of cutting and threading black pipe to make up a gas piping hook-up. They then cut copper tubing to their drawing dimensions from their morning session, prepped the joints and soldered them together as an assembly. They were also trained on Service Plumbing; toilet flush valve and flapper repair, faucet seats or cartridge repair or replacement, and unplugging a clogged drainor toilet. 15 minutes was allotted to the workings of a water heater, inspecting cut-aways, and the need for expansion tanks, and pressure and temperature relief valves. The most interesting tour they took was the in-place model Medical Gas Facility that replicates a typical Hospital Facility, complete with Operating Room Medical Gas Hook-ups, Med. Gas Supply storage, filters and driers all hooked-up in duplicate for stand-by usage. Following the afternoon session wrap-up, the Troop assembled for a critique of the program, receive their Merit Badge Certificates, and group photo. Troops and Attendees for the Merit Badge Training: Troop 153: Frank Krupka, Mitchell CarsonRyan Turner, Lucas Carson, Mason MacDonald, Colin Barnes, Brandon Nagel, Peter Siezak, Connerr Van Dyke Troop 610: (1st half of Troop trained earlier) Tony Milady, Jonathan Brunnet Troop 319: (1st half of Troop trained earlier) DeAndrea Barkley, Michael Mascella, Quentin Kaminski Troop 159: Charlie Siford, Patrick Osen

9 NOH Chapter of ASSE / Cleveland Chapter of ASPE November 14, 2012 Joint Training Session/Meeting On November 14, 2012, approximately 50 members and guests from the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE, Plumbers Local 55 UA, and the Cleveland Chapter of ASPE were present for the very timely and professional presentation on Legionella Disease and ASHRAE s proposed new Standard #188, which will probably be voted on and passed by the ASHRAE Board of Directors next spring Janet E. Stout, PhD, Microbiologist, Director, Special Pathogen Laboratories, University of Pittsburgh, Research Associate Professor, shown above, presented a comprehensive program entitled Legionella: New Standards and a Paradigm for Prevention. She detailed her presentation on the origin, explanation of Legionella and its hidden effects on your daily life through contact with ordinary potable and non-potable water. She explained how it is aspirated into the lungs through aerosolization of water droplets from mists or vapors emitted by showers, spas, cooling towers, public fountains or any place water has a chance to mist into the surrounding atmosphere. The Legionella bacteria which is naturally present in all water, except distilled or high purity water applications, thrives on ambient to hot water and must be killed through the folllowing: Chlorination (Continuous or Supplemental), Chlorine Dioxide, Thermal Shock, Point of use Filtration, or the latest Copper-Silver Ionization methods. She also explained the progress and workings of the proposed ASHRAE Standard 188, which is scheduled to become an approved Standard next year early After this is published, it will undoubtedly be mandated by legislation to became a law the will be enforced for commercial applications. This complete Power Point Presentation is available in PDF format for those who were unable to attend, on the NOH Web site listed below, and explains all the steps for Legionella water safety to asses the risks, procedures and chemical or biologic treatments to control or eliminate the risks involved.
