1 September 2, 2014 Meeting Minutes Meeting called to order at: 6:03pm Meeting Adjourned at: 6:50pm Number of Members in Attendance: 59 Motion made and approved to accept Minutes from the May 2014 Meeting without a reading. WSBA LOSSES Over the last few weeks, we lost Member Sala Gembala. Sala was 33 years old, married to WSBA Member Ryan Gembala and had two children, a toddler and a new born. Sala was an Immigration Lawyer with Catholic Charities. Member Joe Jerome lost his 22 year-old daughter Carolyn. She was a resident of Westlake. She was found near the Rocky River in the Metroparks On Sunday August 24 th. Both losses were tragic and completely unexpected and huge losses for their families and friends. We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to all of those touched by the losses. MEMBER LIST At the end of 2013, we had 437 members. At the beginning of this meeting we 433 dues paying members for If you are not receiving LISTSERV messages and you did not opt out of LISTSERV, you need to contact Tim Clemens about confirming your continued Membership and getting back onto the list. We will soon begin to collect dues for As you may recall, this is a tedious process. Especially now that we have well over 400 Members. We will need you help in getting your dues in early. Details will follow. WEB PAGE UPDATE The webpage is and has been up and running. Not everyone has registered his or her information on the page. Please do so.

2 LISTSERV Our IT folks have done a lot of work. Issues arose when most of the providers upgraded their security systems. We were not the only LISTSERV that experienced problems. It took over two months for most of the issues to be addressed and updated. We are VERY fortunate to have the IT folks we have. The issue arose because of Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance (DMARC). The best explanation is that the providers changed their security settings requiring our LISTSERV header field to be changed to conform to the new security requirements. providers made the change, without notice, which disallowed certain provider customers from receiving s/postings via any LISTSERV operation. At this point, we believe, since we have received no recent inquires from our Members, that all is back to being operational. Instead of spending thousands of dollars for a solution from a commercial provider, our IT guys were able to complete the repairs for under $300. We are very fortunate and grateful to have two very talented and dedicated volunteer IT professionals meeting our needs. CLE's Our CLE Committee is made up of Members Joe Burke, Tim Clemens, Veronica Dever, Chris Murray, Tania Nemer, and Drue Skyard. Thus far, in 2014, we have sponsored two CLE s. The first was Crimmigration on May 30 th and the second was on Drugged Driving on July 25 th. Our third CLE for the year is next Friday, September 12, On Friday September 12, 2014, the West Shore Bar Association (WSBA), in conjunction with the Rocky River Municipal Court, is sponsoring a 3.0 CLE on Elder Law. As with all of our CLE s, space is limited so if you want to attend, we suggest that you register early. The CLE will be held at The Don Umerly Civic Center at Hilliard Road in Rocky River (across the parking lot from the Rocky River Municipal Court).

3 Check in is from 8:00am - 8:30am. The CLE begins at 8:30am and ends at 11:45am. The cost is $50 for WSBA Members and $75 for non- Members. Registration forms are in the back of the room tonight. Presenters are Roseanne Hilow, Magistrate Cuyahoga County Probate Court, Kelli Kay Perk, Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor and Sandra Buzney, J.D., LISW of Sandra J. Buzney Co., L.P.A. You may also retrieve a registration form at westshorebarassociation.org under "News and Events" or on the home page of the Rocky River Municipal Court at rrcourt.net For 2014, we are working to add a fifth CLE presentation. It will be on Friday November 7, 2014 at the Breen Center at St Ignatius High School at 2008 West 30 th (entrance on Lorain Road). Details are being finalized. We are seeking 6.0 hours of CLE credit. Judges C. Ellen Connelly, Burt Griffin and Brendan Sheehan, along with Vincent Bugliosi and others will be the presenters. This will be their third presentation in Cleveland since last year. In addition to CLE s, this seminar will also be open to the general public at a reduced rate. More details will be provided as the date grows nearer. Remaining 2014 CLE dates are on the following Fridays: September 12, 2014 (Elder Law) November 7, 2014 (Kennedy Assassination) December 5, 2014 (Ethics Professionalism) Periodically, we also have opportunities to attend other CLE s. We will do our best to keep everyone informed when those opportunities arise MONTHLY GENERAL MEETING DATES Tuesday October 7, 2014 (combined General Meeting and Clambake) Tuesday November 11, 2014 (delayed by one week General Election) Tuesday December 9, 2014 (Holiday Party) SPONSORSHIPS OF SPORTS TEAMS The WSBA Executive Board has voted not to sponsor any recreational sports teams or leagues. We have been receiving some requests to sponsor WSBA Member Teams (i.e. softball, bowling, volleyball). The WSBA is not in a position to fulfill sponsorship requests. We do,

4 however, encourage all of our Members to continue organizing and participating in various leagues and team activities. However, participants will have to cover all of the costs and/or fees or solicit businesses as potential sponsors. Activities, such as the WSBA Weekly Golf League, where participants already pay to play and already cover all associated costs and fees, will continue, as is. In fact, the WSBA Weekly Golf League is a great example of how our Members "pay to play while getting together, to share a common interest, to network and to socialize. 5 SOCIAL COMMITTEE REPORT Kudos to Member Richard Heiser and the rest of the Social Committee for all of his work and organization for the WSBA Cleveland Indians Game. All you attended had a great time. Kudos to Member Judge Denise Rini and the rest of the Social Committee for their planning and organizing the WSBA Golf Outing at the Elyria Country Club. There were 64 golfers/participants The 13th Annual Southwest Bar Golf Outing is this Friday, September 5, 2014 beginning at 9:00am at Springvale Golf Course in North Olmsted. This is the fourth year that the SBA has generously invited the WSBA to Co-sponsor and our Members to attend their Golf Outing. This is a 4 person Scramble. Cost is $80/person. Cost includes lunch at the turn, a steak dinner and prizes. The SBA is another great Bar Association and a repeat partner with the WSBA. If available, your participation as a WSBA Member would show great support for our SBA brothers and sisters. Tonight Flyer/Registration forms are in the back of the room. Clam Bake/Combined with October Monthly Meeting Tuesday October 7, 2014 at the Edgewater Yacht Club beginning at 5:30pm. The cost is $30/person. The cost includes the venue, one beverage and one complete bake. Additional drinks will be available for purchase. The Bake includes: Clam Broth, Homemade Clam Chowder, one dozen Middle Neck Clams, half baked chicken, white or sweet potato, corn on the cob, garden salad, roll butter, coffee and assorted pastries. Additional clams can be purchased for $7/dozen. There will be a cash bar. 6 NEW BUSINESS FROM MEMBERS: Judge Hagan gave everyone a heads up that another amendment to the Sealing of Records (ORC s and ) law will occur on September 19 th Member Nick Froning is seeking support for his group of walkers during the 11 th Annual Into The Light Walk sponsored by the Suicide Prevention Education Alliance (SPEA) being held at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on Sunday October 5, 2014 beginning at 5:45pm. The Outing is on Saturday September 13, 2014 at Bob-O-Link Golf Course. The cost is $300/Foursome or $75/Golfer and an option for dinner only at $25. Price includes 18 holes, cart, beverages, lunch at the turn, pig roast dinner and cash prizes. For an additional charge, there are contests, mulligans, 50/50 raffle, and skins.
