CoNSERNS- U (Community Network of Schodack, East Greenbush, Rensselaer, Nassau & Sand Lake-United) is a basic needs outreach center providing services to southern Rensselaer County. Their goal is to collect 2,000 books (ages Infant to Teen) for their holiday store. Earth, Air, Fire, and Water Community Project The University at Albany and the Upper Hudson Library System are sponsoring a project highlighting how the arts and humanities are addressing the changes in our climate and natural environment. The East Greenbush Library is pleased to offer the programs listed below. For information on programs at other participating libraries, please visit: google.com/site/artandclimate Adult Winter Sustainability Game January 2 through February 25. Pick up a game card starting January 2 and start earning raffle tickets. The finale will be at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25. Registration for the finale begins February 4. The Adult Monthly Book Discussion will feature Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver Monday, January 19 at 10:00 a.m. Lecture on The Science of Climate Change Sunday, January 25 at 2:00 p.m. Dr. Mimi Katz, RPI Professor in the Dept. of Earth and Environmental Sciences, will provide an overview of data and evidence that shows changes in climate and greenhouse gases through the early 21 st century. The significance of these changes is apparent when viewed within the context of (1) reconstructions of natural variability over many hundreds of thousands of years, and (2) comparisons of natural and man-made components of modern climate change. Children s Program Tuesday, February 17 at 11:00 a.m. for ages 4 and up. Join Beatrice Green the Recycling Queen and her kangaroo puppet Kiki for a fun show about recycling! REGISTRATION REQUIRED. Open enrollment is from November 15, 2014 through February 15, 2015 Library NEWS Service Alert: The Upper Hudson Library System will be upgrading our online catalog and patron management software in late February. This is an exciting project that will allow us to provide a better library experience for our users. However, during the upgrade period, users are likely to encounter disruptions in some services. We will do our best to inform patrons of any expected service outages on our website, Facebook, and Twitter. Thank you, in advance, for your patience with the process. Charging Stations: Does your device need a boost? Look for the new device charging stations in the library. Just select the right cord for your phone or tablet and plug it in to charge up. Please remember to keep an eye on your device, as the library is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Honor a Loved One: Looking to honor a loved one this holiday season? Consider purchasing one of the open brick spaces in our outdoor community space. We currently have ten (4x8) spaces available. If you are interested, please visit our website for information or stop by the library to pick up the paperwork. The additional bricks will be placed in the space in early spring.

2 2 events for Adults Health & Wellness Arthritis Foundation Tai Chi Class Monday, January 5 April 6 at 6:00 p.m. This program (a series of 14 classes) is designed specifically for people with arthritis, but anyone can take the class. This class can be taken standing or sitting. It improves flexibility, breathing, relaxation, and builds muscle strength. Class size limited to 15. New students only. Registering for the January 5 class registers you for the entire series. REGISTRATION BEGINS DECEMBER 15. Coping with Depression and Anxiety Wednesday, January 7 at 7:00 p.m. Martin Lyden, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist, will teach you how to deal with worries, anxieties, fears, sad moods, troubling thoughts, difficult memories, and physical pain. The goal of the program is to equip attendees with knowledge of what works and what does not work. It will include teaching, group discussions, and activities. REGISTRATION BEGINS DECEMBER 17. Zumba Gold Wednesday, January 14 and February 18 at 3:45 p.m. It s an invigorating, dance-fitness class that feels fresh, and most of all, exhilarating! Zumba Gold classes provide modified, lowimpact moves for active older adults. Please wear sneakers or athletic shoes. Limited to 35. PLEASE REGISTER FOR EACH CLASS. Music & Entertainment Capital Community Voices Holiday Concert Sunday, December 14 at 2:00 p.m. Take some time out of your busy schedule to treat yourself to a selection of holiday music performed by Capital Community Voices under the direction of Julie Panke and accompanied by John Norton. This program is funded by Friends of East Greenbush Community Library. REGISTRATION BEGINS NOVEMBER 23. Tracks, Trails and Treasures Sunday, January 18 at 2:00 p.m. Tracks, Trails and Treasures is a multi-media presentation by entertainer Chuck Oakes. Chuck tells stories, sings songs, and shares video clips of his adventures exploring ghost towns, mining camps, and historic railroads of our vintage American West. Chuck Oakes is a published author and photographer, as well as an actor and entertainer. REGISTRATION BEGINS DECEMBER 28. Lark Strings Classical Concert Sunday, February 15 at 2:00 p.m. Please join us for our annual classical concert funded by Friends of East Greenbush Community Library. This year we are happy to welcome the Lark Strings Quartet featuring Jessica Belflower, Alyson Slack, Beth Moll, and MaryAnn Dunn. They will play a classical program with American composers O Connor, Ungar, Gershwin and Joplin, mixed with European light classics. REGISTRATION BEGINS JANUARY 25. Community Group Events Community Conversation: Planning for the Future of the Albany Institute of History & Art Monday, December 8 at 6:30 p.m. Join Executive Director Tammis Groft, for an informal discussion about the museum. Share your suggestions regarding future exhibitions, lectures, family programs, special events, and visitor amenities you would like to see. A preview of upcoming programs will be shared. Free admission coupons and posters will be given to each participant. PLEASE REGISTER. EG Kiwanis Tuesdays, December 9, January 13, and February 10 at 6:30 p.m. The East Greenbush Kiwanis invites you to enjoy our guest speakers, TBA, and learn more about the Kiwanis a global organization dedicated to serving the children of the world!! Mavens of Mayhem Author Event Saturday, January 31 at 12:00 noon The weather outside will be cold and the mood inside will be frightful as authors from the local chapter of the Sisters In Crime speak about their books of crime and murder. Check out the Mavens of Mayhem display case during the month of January and come meet the authors. PLEASE REGISTER. Capital Region Audubon Open House & Annual Meeting Sunday, February 22 at 2:00 p.m. See live birds of prey provided by Wildlife Institute of Eastern NY and hear about their habits and challenges. Participate in an art activity with Armando Soto, a professional artist, drawing owls, hawks and birds using basic shapes. This is a family activity designed for parents and their children. At 3:00 p.m. a more formal talk about the birds on display with be presented followed by the Audubon chapter elections and introductions. REGISTRATION BEGINS FEBRUARY 1. See You at the Movies 6:30 pm December 10 - Jersey Boys January 21 - Guardians of the Galaxy Awards Film Festival Saturday, February 21 Movie critic Jackson Murphy will host a film festival featuring 2014 award nominated films, in a variety of categories. Jackson and a panel of critics will introduce and discuss the movies following each showing. Tickets will be required for admission, available at the library when the complete schedule is officially announced the evening of January 21. Award Ballot Contest Everyone can enter once. Great prizes will be awarded to those who most closely match the winners on February 22.

Call or visit our webpage and use our online registration. 3 Historical Talks Rock Art: Petroglyphs, Symbols, Pictographs Tuesday, December 2 at 7:00 p.m. Gil Payette, a storyteller of Native American Folklore, returns with a program on Rock Art. The oldest known petroglyphs in North American are 14,800 years old, located in what is now known as Nevada. Some North American tribes used symbols to mark trails and placed images on walls and trees to record events, battles, or hunts. REGISTRATION BEGINS NOVEMBER 11. Life Speeds Up: Robert Fulton and a Changing New York Sunday, January 11 at 2:00 p.m. NYS Archives retired career public historian Robert W. Arnold III will explore the legacy of Robert Fulton, the creator of the first commercially successful steamboat. His achievement helped catalyze the expansion of steam power into the energy source of the Industrial Revolution. He devised canal locks that were eventually used in Britain, designed the first workable submarine, and more. PLEASE REGISTER. This program, which is free and open to the public, is made possible through the support of the New York Council for the Humanities Speakers in the Humanities program. Greenbush Historical Society Presents: Living History Sunday, February 1 at 2:00 p.m. Clifford Oliver Mealy will portray Solomon Northrup, the black violinist from Saratoga who was lured off Broadway and sold into slavery in The film 12 Years a Slave was based on the autobiography written by Northrup after he gained his freedom. PLEASE REGISTER FOR THIS PROGRAM. Heart Beat: Native American Musical Instruments Sunday, February 8 at 2:00 p.m. Long before Europeans were here, Native Americans had music, dancing and singing; using music for recreation, expression and healing. What is known of their whistles, flutes, rattles, rasps, harps, fiddles and bells? Come to today s program by Gil Payette to find out. REGISTRATION BEGINS JANUARY 11. Greenbush Garden Club presents Edibles in Your Garden Bed Tuesday, January 6 at 6:30 p.m. Denise Mauer, Rensselaer Master Gardener, will discuss edible annuals and perennials in your garden. History of Fort Crailo Tuesday, February 3 at 6:30 p.m. Heidi Hill, Site Manager of Fort Crailo and Schuyler Mansion, will tell the history of Fort Crailo, including some interesting tales of the site. The Greenbush Garden Club has won many awards for refurbishing and maintaining the site s gardens. PLEASE REGISTER. Have you studied a foreign language and want to brush up your fluency? Then our new online language program, Pronunciator, is for you! Come and learn all about its features.
