1 October 2017 Edition REGION V NEWSLETTER Ray Ainsle, # Region V NVP W ell folks, the first quarter is done. I do not like dwelling over numbers but we have to review, then it s on to the fun stuff! As far as USJCI Senate shows, we are -5. With nearly 20% of our base due for the period, I find that not terrible. I deal in fuzzy math and by my figures (ask me one on one I will explain) we are -1, (IL, IN, & OH +1 each, MI -1 and KY -3) which is even less terrible! December is even bigger with 30% of our base due let s get it done. Our Jaycee organizations will be having their Annual meetings get with them to promote Senatorship and recruit them baby senators! Wow was that a great Summer Tour or what!! And we have only begun. I do not know how to top Shoby begging for someone to Show Them To Me and then Gary showing his, but we will make every effort to do our best! Come and join the fun! The calendar in on the website and Facebook is full of where we are going to be. The next major stop is Border Bash hosted this year by President Gary and the Michigan Senate. Yes this was a Michigan/Ohio/ Indiana event for years but Kentucky and Illinois you are invited to have fun as well. The opportunities are there we need you to come out and help mix it up a bit. Conflicting dates? Divide and conquer! Recently I had the opportunity to listen to Bill Brownfield explain why he wrote the Creed and the reasoning behind each line. It was great. Thank you Mission STATEMENT OUR MISSION IS TO FOSTER FRIENDSHIPS AMONG SENATORS WHILE SUPPORTING THE JAYCEE MOVEMENT. to Charlie Eberhardt for procuring that tape and I now have it digitalized. It is inspiring. The big take away from listening to it is what we have always said those 65 words are as relevant today as they were when written. I never want to be able to say, I was a member of an organization that used to be. I want to always be able to say I am connected to the Jaycees a viable current organization facing the issues necessary to build a better tomorrow! We must do whatever we can to promote, support, and nurture our home base JCI USA, the Jaycees Interaction is the only way to accomplish that directive. Reach out and ask, what can I do to increase your success? If you want to box up a nice bottle of wine and label it to be opened by the last Senator, then whatever you do do not help the Jaycees, otherwise reach out. Let s keep this party rolling! We are Region V and we re red hot - you re just pissed because you re not! Holy Crap, How- How- How, UGOTTAWANNA!! The summer tour is behind us, and crisp days lay ahead. Time flies when we are having fun! We had a nice contingency of IL Senators travelling to the destinations in Region V and a good time was had by all. We gained a few more stories fit for LINC in our newsletter. Apologies to MI that we will be attending our Fall Mtg in October instead of their Border Bash. Give us another chance to attend, on a date not already booked! I appreciate chairman Monty Schroeder #62203, Sherrie Schroeder FR #52, and the IL Senators who took the time to work the Hoopeston Sweet Corn Festival gates on Labor Day. Your efforts are much appreciated to benefit the chapter treasury. Negotiations are underway regarding our large Poker fundraiser project and we hope to have news on the dates soon. We are trying to confirm locations in Danville. Thanks to JDO #35308 for not giving up, despite the scheduling delays. I issued a challenge for Senators to attend our upcoming IL JCI Senate meeting October 13-15, 2017 at the Bloomington- Normal Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. We will meet in conjunction with the Jaycees at a new facility, so it should be a wonderful time. First Timers will be recognized at the meeting, including our traditional Freshman Senator toast late that Friday evening in the hospitality room. And I do not intend to underemphasize the importance of Meeting attendance by our more seasoned Senators! At the Membership meeting we recognize the highest and lowest Senator numbers. Let s see how low we can go!! I plan to reveal a project to reconnect with Senators who have fallen off our dues paid roster. Everyone should be able to call up a friend and invite them to re-join the Illinois JCI Senate. Past relationships are easy to resume, once reconnection occurs! Marilyn Burton, #55106 Illionis Senate President I am completing this before I attend the US JCI Fall Board Meeting in Pasco, WA. We continue to be thankful for time we spend with our fellow Senators and we pray for all who have been affected by the recent Hurricanes. Marilyn Burton #55106 IL JCI Senate President mkbrph@comcast.net The 26th Annual Larry Olsen Memorial Golf outing, benefitting Illinois Jaycees Charitable Foundation, is scheduled for September 23, 2017 at Deer Creek Golf Club in University Park. 5 T REGION V NEWSLETTER - ENJOYING THE VIEW he busy travel portion of JCI Senate year is now in the past. My wife Lynn and I enjoyed the hospitality in Chillicothe, Ohio, Springfield Illinois and Bardstown, Kentucky. Indiana also held its meeting in Portage Indiana on August 19th and a special shout out to National Secretary Mike Andrews who did a fantastic job putting together the Summer Meeting. I am proud to say that Indiana has been represented well in all phases including the President s challenge and as of this point we are tied for first place in the challenge standings. All I will say is that I am pretty sure Region V V.P. Ray Ainslie won t be asking me to Lip Sync for a competition any time soon. On the home front, the Indiana JCI Senate has made its presence known at the Hobart Junior Chamber Fourth of July Summer Beer Garden by providing over 11 Senators to work as Bartenders for one of the week s events. On October 7th, the LaPorte Junior Chamber will be hosting the Indiana Junior Chamber members for a weekend of meetings culminated by a dinner where two new Senatorships will be given. The Indiana JCI Senate intends on having a strong presence at the dinner including the presence of Region V V.P. Ray Ainslie. The upcoming months will include visits to Southgate, Michigan, the weekend of October for the Border Bash with Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. We will be back in Southgate for the Michigan Post Holiday Party on January 13th of The US JCI Senate Winter BOD Meeting with be in St. Augustine, FL from January 18-21st, followed by the IN/KY Senate Joint Meeting in Louisville, KY the week end of January 26-28th. On a special note, the Indiana Meeting held in Louisville on January 27th will also be the nomination meeting for those wanting to run for BOD offices next year. Finally, the Indiana JCI Election Meeting will be held in Brown County, IN the week end of April 13-15th. On a final note, the Indiana JCI Senate has successfully run a February Lottery for the past few years. The cost of a ticket is only $5 and there is a potential to win $50 per day and you can win multiple times throughout the month. It is one of the few ways that we have to make the income that we need to run this organization. I am asking all of you to look into your hearts and remember how important it was for you to earn your Senatorships and how proud you were to receive that very special honor. Please take a few minutes of your time to buy or sell the Lottery tickets so that we can continue to run this fine organization. If you are reading this and you are not a member of the Indiana JCI Senate but you would like to be entered in to the Lottery, please contact me at mjshoback@hotmail.com or contact any Indiana JCI Senator. In conclusion, Lynn and I would like to send our thoughts and prayers to all those in the states hit by the massive storms, flooding, hurricanes and fires. You people down south need to learn to behave yourselves LOL. We also look forward to what the remainder of the year has to offer. Seems like only yesterday when I was sitting at my computer composing my first newsletter article for the year. We have been busy the past few months. I took a day trip to the Ohio Pig Roast in Chillicothe. The 3-hour trip took 4 ½ hours going up. I hit 2 bridge out detours and drive probably 50+ miles more than expected. I did arrive in Chillicothe and enjoyed my visit and meal. I took a different path home and did in fact arrive home in a little over 3 hours. It was a good day over all. We held our annual Bourbon Bash on August 4th & 5th. We had great weather. We hosted approximately 115 people for the Saturday night dinner and fireworks. John Kelly was again a very gracious host for letting us use his home and farm. Jim Dulin and Will Chester coordinated a host of volunteers from several states to make the event a wonderful weekend. Kentucky is very thankful for all of our Senate friends that come and jump into whatever needs to be done to keep the party going. Thank you! Kentucky is the host for this year s annual Kentucky/Indiana Meeting held each January. We are looking forward to meeting with our Indiana Senators the weekend of January 26 & 27 at the Ramada Conference Center in Louisville. This is not a closed meeting so any other Senators are welcome to join us for the weekend. The registration form should be available with this newsletter as well as on the Region V and Kentucky Senate websites. I look forward to seeing many of you in the next few months. We almost have the 2nd month of the Lighting the Future year gone and the Region V Summer tour is also nearly over. As I am preparing for our Summer Social and the upcoming meeting in Big Rapids I find myself looking back to a great month of traveling with family and fellow senators. I found myself in mid July traveling to Ohio for their annual Pig Roast event. The food and hospitality of the Ohio senate was wonderful as always and Don Mcdurmon and myself secure a 1st place win in the state s challenge which was corn hole. Next stop on the tour was the Illinois Picnic, which I wasn t able to attend due to work but I heard from Millie Tyszkiewicz (whom went with Jack and Karen Ryan) that they had a great time but it was HOT. I want to thank them for making the trip and representing us, and I heard we finished 3rd in the state s challenge which was Jenga. Had I known that I would ve sent John Badeen who loves that game. As the month changed into August I knew that meant one thing BOURBON BASH in Kentucky was here. I think I counted 22 Michigan Senators that attended this popular summer tour party stop. We had some great tours, great food and some wonderful southern hospitality while there for the weekend. I was able to bring my wife (Kim) and 2 wonderful daughters (Allison, Danielle) to share in all this project has to offer. They are both looking forward to going again next year as I am sure are many of the 1st time Michigan Senators that attended. With no thanks to our current VP s Matt Sernau and Nina Perko-Badeen for changing my music for the state challenge to I m too Sexy at the last minute, we still finished 2nd. (got to spend some time with Brian Klinge and Bob Allen as well while in KY which was nice since they both live out of state now) Onto this past weekend Indiana Summer Meeting in the great city of Portage. Once again Don McDurmon was my travel partner. I got to be there as President Mike and his board of directors got sworn in which was a nice touch to their meeting. Because of a mess up to our room reservation we decided to make the trip back home that same day which made for a long day (7 hours of driving). But we did make time to stop at John Voshel s favorite place Hooters!! State s challenge was cards and we placed 1st once again. I would like to take a minute to thank our treasury Bridgette Rillema and past treasury s Edonna Russell and Wendy Klinge for working on getting out books in order. When I took over as your 45th President I had to step down from my elected spot as a Life Member Trustee, in doing that left a vacant spot in which I recently appoint Douglas Hincker to finish out my term. Thank you Doug for continuing to serve our organization. I am looking forward to our upcoming Summer and Fall meetings and socials and of course Border Bash (which we are hosting for the region) and let s not forget Post Holiday Party which is being chaired by Rich Lindow and Julie Carter again this year. Remember folks we are a social organization and that only works if we get to see you all once in a while. Looking forward to seeing many Region V friends at Border Bash on October 14th. Gary L. I must say according to the report I got everyone did a fine job. I was not required to make any phone calls the first quarter. I guess that can be interpreted in a couple ways. One is that you believe in deadlines or two you didn t want to talk to me. In either event congratulations on meeting your deadlines. As you know there a couple deadlines coming up this quarter. Keep up the good work and make Region V an on time Region once again. On another note to the State Presidents. All you State Presidents were given Region V tickets. As you know it comes with a financial cost to be an officer in your state as well as representing our states in the USJCI Senate. If you have not already informed the members of your state of this opportunity to support our National VP, I encourage you to do so soon. Yes, I may be given a call to call you on this matter. I wish each and every one of you a successful year. Remember you did not take on your responsibility to wear a name badge but you took it on to assure the members of your State finds value in being not a name on a roster but a MEMBER of your state organization! DMMCC Charlie Eberhardt JCI Senator #54887 A s summer comes to an end and we start getting ready for fall and the holidays, it gives me a chance to reflect on the past few months. I ll start with the National Meeting in Northbrook, IL. I know this meeting is not really the official start to the new senate year, but it was my beginning. I had so much fun hanging out with old friends and meeting new ones. The stories that were told and the laughs we had are what makes these experiences so much fun. From cooking with the food crew, to partaking in my first bourbon tasting and stanky club, I had a wonderful time. After that, it was on to the Illinois Picnic and 40th Anniversary. What an awesome event this was as Illinois put on quite the celebration for their 40th. I was glad that Sarah was able to travel with me so that she could see the history of this wonderful organization. Ray and the entire Illinois senate did a wonderful job with everything for the weekend. Congratulations to the Illinois Senate and here s to 40 more years! Of course the next event was in my back yard, the Bourbon Bash. First I want to thank everyone for all their help that we get every year with this event. The Bash always seems like a whirlwind to me and that it comes and goes like a blur. I love that so many people enjoy it and I ll never take it for granted that you all take the time to come spend it with us. Next we where onward and Indiana bound. The last summer event of the year for me was the Indiana meeting. I always enjoy my time with the Indiana Senate as they always make me feel like I m at home. The weather was perfect, the food and drinks were plentiful and the late night games were just a few of the highlights. Speaking of games; next time you see Sherry Jones ask her how many cheese balls she can fit in her mouth. Short answer, a whole lot. Next up for me will be the Border Bash in Michigan. I m looking forward to more adventures and I know President Gary and his team will have some fun things planned for us to enjoy. It s always nice to visit Michigan and to see the rest of my Region V friends. Till next time. Will Chester #63037 Region V Assistant I Jean Geddes, #68885 Region V Chaplain CH Chaplain would like to thank everyone who has called me or sent e mails informing me of senators we have lost since July 1st.
