I hope that this newsletter finds you well and that your Christmas was a good one. Half the Lighting the Future year is gone but we still have another 6 months of social gatherings and meetings to keep us busy. Kin Roffe #72252 Secretary secretary@michiganjcisenate.org We had 23 senators show up at the West Side Social in Grand Rapids where we were able to talk about upcoming events and share some good conversation during the 3 hour event. Special thanks to Sarah Nelson for taking the time to plan this wonderful event. Danny Austin Jr. #75488 Chaplain chaplain@michiganjcisenate.org It s that time of the year already where we need to start thinking of next years elected officials. I have a couple ideas but we need to know from our members who might be interested in being more involved. The tentative plan is to hold elections in March or April either in Lansing or Grand Rapids area. Jenny Brunner and the Ohio Senate are also hosting a Pre-Post Holiday Party in Ohio on Friday Jan 12th if interested contact Jenny directly please. I want to thank all those that have made the first half of the year so special from those of you that stepped up to be on the team, to those senators that traveled to events in the State, Region, and US. I am so looking forward to seeing you all in January at the Post Holiday Party till then Happy Holidays and Happy New Year. Sincerely, Gary L. 2 Border Bash Return the Favor By the time you read this the holidays would have come and passed but winter is still upon us.. oh for the days of spring and summer coming soon.. hope everyone had great holidays with their family and friends and now into a new year we have come.. looking forward to celebrating the 2017 year end of the Jaycees at the upcoming conference or as we used to call it convention.. this will be my second one as firsttimers chair and looking forward to it had a great turn out of firsttimers last time can't wait to see how many this time gives us.. so please remind your chapters to get their new members to participate.. be safe stay warm see you in February hopefully. Mary Burden #62527 Winter has finally come our way. Many Jaycee chapters have winter clothing drives underway. Some are helping Soup kitchens or homeless shelters. Many Jaycee Senators continue to assist the area Jaycee chapters. The senators and past Jaycees want the best for this great Jaycee organization, in addition to living the creed, especially service to humanity is the best work of life. There is a link on the Senate website for Senators to log in their involvement with the Jaycees. The United States JCI Senate Return the Favor Chair is emphasizing AIM (Action, Impact, and Mentor). This could be phone calls of support and advice, project attendance, speaking at meetings, and/or mentoring. The Michigan Jaycee Senate in turn reports this involvement to the USJCI Senate. There is recognition at the national level, also. I have invited all the Jaycee chapter presidents to nominate a Senator for the trimester awards Tony Karasiewicz Return the Favor Award. Who will be the next recipient? Keep supporting the Jaycees, so they can become the future leaders of communities.
3 New Year s Resolutions Nina Perko-Badeen #73043 MI JCI Senate Vice President Hope your holidays were enjoyable. I know I ate way too much!! Looking back over the last year, I have had many new adventures. From buying a home in Canton to getting married, plus getting back involved with the Jaycees via the Senate, and traveling to Amsterdam for World Congress, I was crazy busy. Looking forward to 2018, I hope to have some more adventures ahead! In light of the New Year, I thought I would discuss New Year s Resolutions. Ever wonder where the tradition of making resolutions came from? According to resolutions can be traced over 4000 years back to the Babylonians who made promises to their gods to repay debts and/or return borrowed items. Their new year coincided with the planting season in March when they crowned their new king. Rumor has it that if they kept their commitments to the gods, then favor would be bestowed upon them, if not, well, the gods weren t happy. Ancient Romans also had a similar practice with their god, Janus (January). The two-faced god looked both to the past and to the future. Again, wanting to be in the god s good graces into the coming year, the Romans offered sacrifices and promises of good conduct to Janus. Today, rather than making promises to pagan gods, people now tend to evaluate the previous year to determine what they need to change. We then make promises to ourselves to improve. However, in general, most people do not follow through with their resolutions. Why? Road bumps, lack of commitment, life! So, here are some ideas to help your resolutions stick: Start small and use your Jaycee skills for setting goals. Make only a few commitments rather than a long list that will discourage you. Use SMART goals and develop a plan. Change one major behavior at a time rather than try to do everything at once. It is easier to commit and follow through with one major thing than have a long list of things we know we won t be able to accomplish. Talk about it! Share your list with others. Give people an update. This holds you accountable. Don t get discouraged or beat yourself up. Stay positive. We all make mistakes rather than give up, just start fresh the next day. Seek the support of others. This could be a work out buddy, a support group, or your fellow Senators! Don t tackle your resolutions alone. Write it down. Every day. Constantly remind yourself of your goals. It is common knowledge in psychology that when you write something down, you are more likely to remember and follow through. Some of my New Year s Resolutions: Stick to a gluten free diet (I have a tendency to slip when dinner rolls and dark beer are involved) Limit sugar intake (I did really well prepping for my wedding by eliminating sugar and I lost a bunch of weight which I have now found again). Attend at least ONE Senate (or Jaycee) event a month. I hope one of YOUR resolutions this year is to attend MORE Michigan JCI Senate events as well. In case you are wondering here is a great one to attend: East side Social: Team USA Hockey Game Date: Saturday, March 3, 2018 Location: Compuware Arena, Plymouth Time: 7:00 PM Cost: $10/ticket + parking Additional info: We may plan to meet up at the on-site restaurant for dinner/drinks before the game if there is enough interest. For more info, contact Fay Walsh or Stephanie Kandah! West siders are welcome to join us too!
4 Jaycee Creed We Believe... That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life; That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations; That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise; That government should be of laws rather than of men; That earth's great treasure lies in human personality; And that service to humanity is the best work of life. ACHOO!!! Yep, cold and flu season is - C. William Brownfield upon us once again. My husband and daughter have already gone through round one. Germs spread in lots of ways, but phones and tablets top the list in our household. Gadgets are among the most germ-ridden objects in a January 13 Post Holiday Party Southgate, MI person s home. Here's how I like to safety disinfect them (method adapted January US JCI Senate Winter Board St. Augustine, FL from several internet sources). January Kentucky/Indiana Joint Meeting Louisville, KY Step 1: Make yourself a diluted alcohol solution. (Fill a spray bottle halfway with distilled or bottled water. Fill the other half of the bottle with 70% isopropyl alcohol. NOTE: 70% isopropyl alcohol is less harsh and abrasive on your screen as opposed to 99% or 91% isopropyl alcohol. Screw the cap back on and shake the bottle to mix the solution.) February 10 (Jaycee Convention) March 3 I try and remember to do this once a week. Be aware that several internet sources advise that this is not for everyday cleaning. For daily cleaning, you can just use a dry lint-free cloth. Here s to a healthy winter season. I look forward to seeing you at our next event. Bridgette Rilema #74269 JCI Senate Treasurer East Side Social USA Hockey Game at Compuware Arena, Plymouth MI March Region V Spring Fling Springfield, IL April 13 Indiana Meeting Brown County, IN April 27 Ohio's 50th Celebration Columbus, OH Step 2: Grab a lint-free cloth (like the May 5 kind you use on glasses) and spray it with the diluted alcohol solution. NOTE: Never spray the solution directly on your phone. Instead, spray the cloth once or twice but don't get it completely wet. Step 3: Wipe your device. Don t forget the buttons!
