1 Greetings, Region V Senators! The weather is changing finally! Instead of HOT days and bathing suits, we are now looking at sweatshirts, cooler days, and football. For those of you who know me well, you know I BLEED BLUE. Why am I excited about KY football? It s a new season with a new coach and new possibilities. If that s not enough, BASKETBALL is right around the corner! Yippee!!!! With fall comes Fall Boards in Iowa! I just returned from sharing the weekend in Iowa with 52 Region V senators and we had a wonderful time. From the food to the American Pickers to the corn, Iowa has a little something for everyone. We had one KY senator who had never been on a tractor but was able to experience that at John Deere! Region V even got some recognition: Ohio s president, Charlie Eberhardt, was recognized by President Larry with a special presidential pin; Michigan s president, THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE US JCI REGION V SENATE THE DREAM CATCHER NOV, DEC, JAN 2014 VOLUME 1 ISSUE 2 THE DREAM MAKER...JeNie Altman #56150 Sue Foltin, was recognized for her RTF activities -traveling around the state to the Jaycee functions; Illinois and Ohio were both recognized as growth states this quarter; and Kentucky was named 3 rd place in the nation for Presidential Raffle Ticket Sales. Let s keep the momentum going! I am excited and I feel like this is just the start to a great year for Region V! If you are helping the Jaycees in your state in any way, please send in your paperwork. Contact Monty Schroeder (IL) if you need assistance. If your state is running the Scholarship Program, please start notifying your schools. Let s get those turned in and get some of our outstanding seniors honored. If you are hosting a wonderful project, send pictures to Karen Schoonover (OH) for inclusion in this newsletter and possibly in the Mentors Magazine. The idea is to let people know what we are doing! Do you know a senator who is not a member of your state organization? Call and ask them to join. Why should we be having ALL of the fun? Char- lie said something the other day that reminded me of my Jaycee recruiting days. What did we do before internet, texting, and ? We picked up the phone and called or dropped them a note or went to visit. While the web has made communication so much easier, it has also taken away some of the personal touch. If each one of us would make one phone call to a senator who isn t active in that state organization, think about how many new friends we could have by the end of the year. I joined the Jaycees because somebody asked me to join; I joined the KY Senate because somebody invited me to my first meeting. Sometimes we sit back and don t get involved because nobody made that first overture and invited us. Why don t you be the one who reaches out to a senator and brings them into our family? It never hurts to ask! Think about what they will be gaining, too a wonderful, caring family. I m glad someone thought enough of me to ask me to join the KY senate. I wouldn t want to miss any of this for the world DREAM WEAVERS REGION V VP JeNie Altman #56150 H C glaltman@windstream.net ILLINOIS PRESIDENT Linda Ferguson #64547 (H) jci64547@yahoo.co, INDIANA PRESIDENT Tracy Brown #54773 (C) tracy.brown@ onbinvestments.com KENTUCKY PRESIDENT Donna Roope-Cassell #68681 (H) (C) MICHIGAN PRESIDENT & WEBMASTER Susan Foltin #63744 (H) (C) suefoltin@gmail.com OHIO PRESIDENT Charlie Eberhardt #54887 (H) chasjaycee@aol.com

Thank you Phyllis, Larry and committee for a interesting weekend. There's still more Illini concessions games to be worked and Denny Birt is busy looking for workers. The Jay- Kentucky JCI President...Donna Roope-Cassell #68681 Newsletter a r t i c l e s ; this is what I like least about this p o s i t i o n. For some reason I can t get my thoughts together and I sure can t sit still long enough. October was a busy month for me. I attended our local Autism School and we painted pumpkins that cee fairs, festivals and homecomings are about done for the year but we still have a few bbqs, chilli cook offs, haunted mazes/houses, chilli cook offs and spaghetti dinners that are being ran. More projects that a senator can visit or even help out. The Illinois senators have lotto tickets for sale. Make sure you get yours before they are all gone. Mark Niedenthal is the person we sold at our Convention on October 4-5, The students were so excited and so was I. They painted footballs, basketballs and even a volley ball but never pumpkins! What a great fundraiser. On October 5, after our Board Meeting we we be headied to Keeneland for a little fun. We may not have won enough betting to Page 2 to contact if your interested in taking a chance. The drawings will be the numbers drawn for the Illinois daily evening lotto for the month of February. Everyone that purchases a ticket has 29 chances of winning. Until next time "Get Er Done than Have Some Fun"! Linda Ferguson President IL JCI Senate retire or skip work on Monday, but we had a great time. I also headed to the Border Bash in IN, my first trip to this event and it was CRAZY! Hopefully we will know exactly what s going on in the next few days. Newsletter articles will be due the Wednesday after Winter Boards (January, 2014). I will not be able to attend this mid-winter getaway, so pictures from this event will be needed for this newsletter. I will be sending out reminders and I will not loose them, because I will be using my gmail account, instead of yahoo, just for Region V correspondence. 3 Page 3 DREAM Michigan JCI President...Sue Foltin #63744 WEAVERS GO BLUE!!!, Region V! While it probably isn t politically correct, I am partial to my Wolverines!!! And now that fall is here and we have college football again, I can t keep from yelling it all the time!!! GO BLUE!!! Michigan s first quarter has been a very busy one! After getting through the Region V summer tour, we brought back a favorite social event the Annual Family Picnic. Thank you to Sue Metalski #68846, Paula Peters #57370 and Art Abbott #23795 for organizing this event. We have nearly 30 senators and their families attend an almost perfect day at Kensington Park on August 10 th. Among all the games, bbq ing, swim park and chit-chat, we learned a very important lesson. There is an art to operating a funnel-a-tor as Mike O'Connell s #40225 grandson Ethan found out when he pulled back the sling-shot device with a water balloon, only to have it flip and come right back at him. After this fun social we began working several fundraising events. We had our Woodward Dream Cruise in Pontiac, chaired again by Pat Malac #41085 and Tim La- Barge # 43200, where we are estimating to have made $2500-$3000 selling t-shirts over 2 days. Then we moved over to the west-side of the state (Wyoming), where we held a 2-day poker night event. Thank you to Edonna Russell #69002 for chairing this event that brought in another $1800. Then the following week we held another 4-day poker night event on the east-side (Westland) where we are predicting another $1800 raised. Thank you to Gary Bulson #66823 for spear-heading this. And in-between the Dream Cruise and the final poker night we held 2 weekends of beer and wine sales at first-time events in Augusta (Frontier Days and Bluegrass Music Festival). Unfortunately we are hoping to break even with these 2 events once all the numbers are calculated. Thank you to Lou Irwin #33002 and Mary Burden #62527 with the assistance of Dan Gratz # for organizing these weekends. I ve also had the opportunity to travel around the state, visiting with Jaycee chapters, re-introducing the Senate to them and establishing open lines of communication. So far I have traveled to 22 Jaycee events (18 / 34 individual chapters) and covered over 2500 miles (this does NOT include Senate travel). Wow what a great experience and what a shot of young to be with them. Lastly, we have begun planning the 2014 Post- Holiday Party. We have booked Crystal Gardens again for Saturday, Jan 18 th. This will most likely be the last year Rich Lindow #40108 and Julie Carter #51324 organize the party and for that reason alone we are hoping to have at least 100 in attendance. You can find more information online by going to g/php2014. New this year!!! You can now charge your registration by using paypal (a small convenience fee is applied). The board is hard at work updating bylaws, creating a state plan, readjusting the budget and reaching out to lost senators (lost as in dropped, not directional LOL). Look for more on this to come in later issues. Region V Senators It s a new day and we re feeling good! Sue Foltin #63744 President, MI JCI Senate It s A New Day. 4 INDIANA PICTURES IN & KY dressed in their wedding attire at the KY Bourbon Bash IN Board Meeting at Turtle Run Winery IN Senators at OH s Pig Roast Returning the Favor Hobart Jaycees Beerfest In July NEWSLETTER TITLE Indiana JCI President...Tracy Brown #54773 The Indiana JCI Senate has had a great first part of this year. We haven t had too many official senate membership meetings, we have been busy. In the first quarter, we did some traveling within Region 5 and had a Board Retreat at President Tracy s house for the new board of directors. We have also Returned the Favor to 3 Jaycee chapters in the state of Indiana as well as helping out the state Indiana Jaycees with having their fall board meeting in October at the OH/MI/ IN Border Bash meeting in Auburn IN. We had 27 senators with 280 hours work the Hobart Jaycees Fest in July and the Jasper Jaycees Strassenfest in August. We then had Senators helping out at the Lanesville Jaycees Heritage Weekend Beer Garden in September and in October hosted the Indiana Jaycees Convention in Auburn IN. Thank you to all of the Indiana Senators who have been participating in Returning the Favor. Speaking of the OH/MI/ IN Border Bash, thank you to chairman Mike and Reese Malott for chairing this event for the Indiana JCI Senate again. We had a great turnout, especially from the state of Indiana! The competition between the states was really fun and the competition between the Presidents even more so! Thank you as well to our NVP JeNie for attending and to the state of KY for making the trek with her to the upper part of the state of Indiana. We have obtained a listing of all the senatorships given away in the state of Indiana (over 850) over the years and are working to contact them and hopefully get some of them to join our organization again. Also the old Region 7 Jaycees in the state of Indiana are having a Reunion the weekend of January 18 th, 2014 in Jasper IN and we are hoping to connect with a few old Jaycees and senators at that event. If you are from that region, please make plans to attend at the old Holiday Inn, now a Ramada Inn on that Saturday. And speaking of senatorships, we were privi- Page 4 leged to have received a new senatorship this quarter for Carol Bennett Dobson # Unfortunately she passed away on Oct. 4 th and was presented posthumously. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her husband, Jamie Dobson # January 24-26, 2014 is now our annual IN/KY Joint Senate Meeting This year it will be in Louisville KY at the Holiday Inn on Hurstbourne Parkway. Information and the registration form is on our website and an Indiana Senate meeting will be held. April th, th Anniversary of the IN JCI Senate This will be the premier event for our organization at the Radisson Hotel in Indianapolis IN. Our goal for this event is to get at least 100 senators in attendance whether you are a current member of the organization or not. We will be having our annual Brown Bag Auction and there will be an IN JCI Senate business meeting and elections held at this event as well. Registration form on website under Events. 5 Page 5 Ohio JCI President...Charlie Eberhardt #54887 H e l l o o n c e again Region V Senators. The OHIO JCI Senate has just completed a successful first quarter. The 33rd Annual Pig Roast and Wetzel are behind us as those teams that made these events enjoyable and successful will be thinking about next year. Ohio had a very successful August meeting with Senators we had not seen in a long time attending. Thank you so much to those Senators, it was great to see you after so many years. Our board is making great progress in communications this year. We are hearing from many Senators both old and new. In all the "T.U.N.A." team along with our membership is doing a great job. We are looking forward to seeing many of you at the OH/MI/IN Border Bash hosted by the Indiana JCI Senate on October in Auburn, Indiana. If you need a registration form go to the downloads on our w e b s i t e a t Ohio is getting ready for our November meeting in downtown Canton, Ohio at the McKinley Grand Hotel. This meeting will be held the weekend of November 8-9. We are expecting to see many Senators in that part of the state to stop by and enjoy the friendships of the Ohio JCI Senate. If you are in the area, please stop by for our friendship and to see the many things the Canton area has to offer. We are continuing to reach out to Senators in Ohio both old and new to share in the friendships. Ohio has Senators contacting Senators in their part of the state to keep the success of the "Tour of Ohio" travels going. With this along with our communications we are getting past members reactived and members that have not be around in a long time to show up once again. As we go into October remember to encourage the ladies to make an appointment with their health care provider for Breast Cancer Screening. This is a terrible disease and with early detection many lives can be saved. Keep in mind guys men can also get Breast Cancer. So if you have a family history or in the risk group you should also make that appointment. Remember to give thanks in November. The month of Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. Give thanks to the brave women and men who serve our country in the military to assure the freedoms we all enjoy. The freedoms that all us to have organizations such as the Jaycees and the JCI Senate. The Ohio JCI Senate wishes you all a Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, and a very properous New Year. We wish you all the best of times. Our thoughts and prayers are with those less fortunate in their time of need. Yours in JCI Fellowship, Charlie Eberhardt, P.E. T.U.N.A.
